The Party~ part 2

Social Interaction

Upon arrival, Memon Seth and his Patni greeted Dutta, Naku and Baji. Seth progressed forward towards Dutta warmly,"kya baat hai Dutta Bhau aap padharey, humara tu nasseb jag utha hai "he bubbled as he looked at his wife who nodded in consent with a big smile. Seth embraced Dutta and both his wife and him, clasped their hands and offered their namaste to Naku , who returned the greeting in similar manner. Seth, requested his guests to take a few steps inside his residence's main hall.The atmosphere was alive with a buzz of people, an admixture of both young and old, vibrated with flashes of garment hues, every now and again inter spaced by laughter and chatter. Naku, Dutta, Baji beheld the decor of fresh pink and white blossoms strewn around the balustrade and Grecian columns that boldly supported the ceiling. An array of fresh flowers highlighted every main nook and cranny of interesting landmarks of the spacious hall, the coffee and side tables, window sills, door and window frames. The hall's ambiance was also brought out with rosy pink and clear fairy lights , that twinkled naughtily and added to the gaiety of the celebratory occasion. More wall mounted rosy lights glowed complimenting people who were seated on settees, couches and sofas. Gentle melodies of the sitar soothed, as ridden on the air waves, lulled the crowd amidst the buzz. In one look, Dutta and Baji noticed the bar, and Naku caught them both, and nodded her head in disapproval. Dutta, bowed his head in a silent reassured submission to her, as he spotted her concern. Baji remarked excitedly, "kya bat hai Bhau yahan pe to band baja bhi hai', Dutta inquired smilingly "kyon tujhe naachna hai Baji'?

Memon seth and his wife brought their daughter Divya, to Dutta and Naku and Seth proudly announced "Bhau ye hai Divya, issi nahi BA pass kiya hai kisi'... Divya doubled her hands and shly greeted "Bhau, vahini", Dutta and Naku bowed and reciprocated... Dutta turned in wait to, and spoke with his pointed out stretched palm towards Divya, Naku smiled and pulled out the envelope from her clutch bag and presented it to Divya," ye ap ke liya behant hai", she said gently. Divya accepted gratefully, as Dutta, Baji, Naku and her parents looked on.Seth suggested to Diya again to tell Dutta what her degree was in , Divya replied,"Bhau agricultural science mein hai",which somewhat perplexed Dutta as he nodded apprehensively for her father to elucidate, "Bhau maine khate barhi mein," he replied to the best of his ability. Dutta smiled with approval and proclaimed, with a brief smile "ye tu bahut acha hai PW ke kisanoon ko tum, woh sab sakha sekti ho ,ju tum ne university mein seekha hai Divya". Divya smiled in agreement as his answer pleased her. Naku, too appeared proud of her Saab and his good sense!

Seth, ushered Dutta deeper into the hall, within seconds a few middle aged men clad in gold jewellery and festive clothes approached Dutta like bees to honey! "Dutta Bhao"! they leapt forward to shake his hand. Dutta smiled at them with his usual style of folded hands ,slightly lower than his face.The men fussed around him, somewhat noisily ,ensuing a certain stop and look from people. People who were strangely unfamiliar with him made inquiries and then, there were smiles cum nods from them upon knowing who he was. Dutta, on the other hand stood with shy humility, by the attention showered upon him by his associates, his posture had the vivid mark of a youthful man, with distinguished elegance , poise and sophistication, yet the carriage of his head, the features of his countenance especially the lion like eyes and mouth, also told the tale of his hard charisma. Naku mused in quiet coy contentment, how remarkable it seemed that her Saab who was a lot younger than the men who flitted around him, yet he commanded so much respect from them!

In short both unknown guests, males and females gawked at him with complete awe. Naku watched this and reflected with pride.. Saab hai he assey sab logo ke dil mein jagga bana latey hain."Chalien vahini", suggested Seth's wife and escorted Naku by the hand to a group of women who appeared married to Naku, as they all had a magulsutra around their necks. Naku sat down amongst the group of housewives, meanwhile her eyes centered on Dutta who was in the process along with Baji, of being cajoled to the bar. Naku gawped a little anxious ridden towards Dutta, who had by now reached the bar and he stood with ease, his left elbow perched on the bar surface. Naku observed the men, including Baji helped themselves to drink being poured and served by the barman. Naku imploringly continued her survey of Dutta at the bar, and hoped that he would look her way, so she could deliver her fears of him getting inebriated when he has had one too many.

As if Dutta sensed her unease ,while chatting to his friends ,he casually turned his neck her way and with narrowed eyes he saw her as she sat surrounded by the women folk.. with wide eyes green fixed on him. He responded to her unspoken gazes with dreamy eyes, and signalled with his reclined left hand's forefinger and thumb, meaning "thore se", in complete match to her silence. Naku smiled, abashed as she forcefully attempted and suppressed her tiny smile, in case people noted and thought she was balmy. Dutta, on the other hand was introduced to Seth's young son Deven, who was smartly dressed in a western designer suit. Dutta smiled and accepted the boy's sartorial taste and shook hand with him warmly.'Bhau ye mera beta hai aur aap se milna kay liye bachein tha' said Memon Seth. Dutta, paused for a second before he picked his drink of soda water, and was surprised to see that the young Deven asked the bartender for a neat whiskey, and Dutta jerked his head, with a hard to disguise smile as he was reminded of his own past delights. Suddenly the song "yeh dooriyan, yeh dooriyan ,in rahoon ki dooriyan, humraheyoon ki dooriyan, fanah ho ye dooriyan!" played and livened up the romantic mood. Dutta shifted his position and stood with his back relaxed against the server counter of the bar, as he granted himself a favorable position and acquired a better view of Naku. He captured her green eyes as he obviously brought the tumbler of clear tonic fizz to his lips. With persistence Dutta stared at Naku silently, his eyes contracted and intense, while he transported the lyrics of the song to her. She repaid by a wide eyed look of total surrender to his passionate meaningful looks. His gaze told Naku that his desire was really to end this distance between them, but till then he would continue to shower her with his unspoken love by meeting her eyes or by simply stealing glances at her whenever he can! .

Deven tapped Dutta on the arm 'Bhau chalien mein aap ko apne dostoon se milata hoon', Dutta, turned around and a little relieved caught Baji's eye and cocked his head for Baji to follow as well, as he proceeded with Deven to meet his friends. Deven's friends were young rich lads as Dutta scrutinized from afar, in his shrew manner, in his terminology ' bachaaey', dressed in cool designer casual jeans, silk shirts, watches, gold and silver chains with loud medallions of some past insignia or logos like swastikas, peace emblems, and one even had a Mercedes insignia that dangled commonly from his chain.The lads were mostly clean shaven with either spiky gelled hair or longer than usual tresses, all carried glasses lined with spirits, between one palm. Dutta and Baji exchanged amused looks discreetly.Once Dutta reached them Deven introduced him "guys this is the one and only Dutta Bhao, the top gun of Patilvadi!". Dutta in complete composure joined his hands before the guys ,with a benign smile. He could see that the lads were taken aback by his attire and his complete persona, plus by the introduction that Deven gave about him. Gobsmacked, and jaws dropped, stood still, till one of them expressed,"yaar Deven ,this is amazing we get to meet a real Don, I bet he does a lot of unusual interesting things?. Deven looked at the speaker, "why don't you ask Dutta Bhao himself".Dutta much embarrassed, felt nothing less than an idol, for this was a situation he had not encountered before. One of the lads piped up courage and asked Dutta with reverence," sir for how long have you been a Don, and do you enjoy your job?" Dutta peered intently at the youth gently and responded, "aap sab mujhe Bhao bol sakte hain ,ap ka phelay sawal ka jawab hai,ke main dus saal se Dutta Bhao hoon, maane tu aap ki saban mein Don! rehe baat kam me maaza ke? hain meray kam mein khatra to ha, par mujhe kahatroon se khalein mein maza atta hai, yani tu kafi dafa jan ki baazi lagani parti hai!!" he explained.The young man still wonderment, exclaimed, "wow man this is awesome! playing with dangers and risking your life!"Dutta bowed his head silently at their awe of him.Another lad asked,"Bhao aap ko apne kam mein kya acha nehin lagta? .Dutta braced himself before he answered," kisi bekassor ki jaan chale jaye to mujhe sab se zeyda dokh hota hai, aur kisi mazloom kay saath naa insafi ho tab bhi mera khoon ghaul utha hai"he said passionately. Dutta appeared touched by the interest he had provoked from these city lads, he stopped and scratched his beard with his fore finger, as he awaited another question from them' Bhau,continued another young boy, ap kay pas atna paise hai, power, status hai, ab tu aap ko zindagi bhar kum karni ki kya zarorrat hai?. Dutta deep in thought, withheld his answer, for Deven had decided to answer it," no yaar Bhao is involved in putting things in place in PW, like opening new schools, health centers, and also he does a lot for the agricultural community in this area." Dutta, nodded in consent, and the boy replied after being set right,"aacha tu Bhao apna kafi paise sammaj sawa aur dan mein lagate hein ,wow no wonder everyone thinks he's some big god." Dutta eyes smiled at the boys adoration of his person, and couldn't restrain himself from confessing before them, "haan ye sab tu teekh hai, par mujhe iss bad ka humsa afsoos rahe ga, ke main peraha lekha nahi, ju kuch seekha zindiga na seekhya acha bhi, bhoora bhi'! .The boys valued his candour and a few of them exclaimed otherwise,"humein ap ki theran paisa bana hai, aur ap jaise power chahiey!'.Before they carried on with more questionable negative admiration of him, he raised his palm rigidly and addressed them, in his guttural voice, "nahin, sab se bari takat tumahre liya is waqt ye ha , kay tum sab apni parhai mukamal karo, or phir emandari ka paise kamooi, doosron ki khadmat kar ki.. samjhe ap sab log'!.The young boys smiled in affirmation at his advice, as, Dutta rotated towards Baji and indicated his leave from their group. Deven and friends fumbled a thanks to Dutta as he folded his hands towards them and revolved his feet slowly and moved away. Baji, beamed 'kya Bhau aj to tum ekdum leader ki mafaq bol rahe the, kya baat hai '!, Dutta responded curtly, "chupkar Baji , aur dekh Naku kahder hai' and the two walked towards the bar to join their colleagues and friends.

Where Dutta was busy talking to Deven and his friends, Naku interacted with the group of married women, as part of common politeness the question popped up, 'ap Dutta Bhau ki patni hai? Naku bowed her head gently and confirmed and made room for another query that followed, "kitne baaachey hai aap kay? Naku shyly lowered her eyes ,and Seths wife came to her rescue in haste "abhi, abhi, to shaadi hoi hai ,itni jaldi bhi kya hai,sare umar pharey hai".....But the first lady who quizzed Naku continued,'woh to teekh hai ,lekin mardoon ko band ki rekna cheya , nahi tu edher udhur mau marte hai,aur Dutta tho jawan mard hai, uskay pechay tu koi bhi par sakta hai'.Naku felt flushed and she looked up at the crowd first, there were lots of young girls who were scantily dressed in western clothes, and revealed quite a bit, then there were other pretty girls that were dressed in desirable eastern designer outfits. Her insecure eyes located Dutta at the bar, where he sipped his glass of lemonade and chatted to a clowning Baji. She piped up the courage and replied to the woman, "nahin merey pati asey nahi hain mujhe un par pura bahroosa hai, beechan tu Bhagwan ki dein hain , jab Bappa ki merzi ho gi ho jaye gaye"! Luckily for Naku, Divya sauntered over and retrieved her by taking her over to a group her friends. Naku walked, slowly towards the group of young boys and girls milling together, she wished Dutta was with her ,and she moved her neck and glanced at him still in place at the bar ,at a few yards distance from her. "Vahini, ye meray uni kay doost hain", Naku folded her hands to greet them ,with a namaste, Divya says 'guys this is vahini Nakusha, Dutta Bhau's wife' , which most of them failed to take on board. Divya's girl friends, a good many of them were dressed in spaghetti shoulder strap tops and revealed neck lines in a mix of mini and knee length skirts. They stared at Naku's traditional wear and her simplistic beauty. One of them, remarked 'wow she's lovely' ,which they unanimously agreed to , while they checked out her sari, aap ki sari bahut kobsorrat hai, mujhe to bandeni bhi nahi atti',the admirer confessed. Naku smiled kindly and replied gently, "ap kosish karien to itni mushkal bhi nahi hai sari pehana'.The girl decided to rest her comments. Naku noticed Divya's male friends in the circle as well.They all had skinny jeans and tee shirts with metallic gold/silver patterns sparkling on their chests.There hair stood out gelled and spiked like neatly cut thorns; chunky bold belcher bracelets, decorated their wrists and they all smelt heavily of a concoction of daro, cigarettes and after shave! One of them had a crew cut hair style and earings eyed Naku top to bottom and leered at her, which mades her slightly uncomfortable. The chap, grabbed hold of a passing waiter and picked up a glass of soft drink and passed it to Naku with a plea,'ap ke pass drink nahi hi, ye peejian!', Naku rejected by a sturdy shake of her head, but the man insisted,"le layin soft drink hai kuch aur nahi hai !he persisted with a lecherous smile.This time Naku shook both her hands and looked up towards the bar.. Before she could turn back to her company, Baji ,appeared and went straight for the guy's collar with both hands' "kyon bay salla jub nahi bulla tu nahi! samjha ? ye apun aur samjahe bahar lay ja ker!' and he dragged the guy unceremoniously out of the company. By now, the commotion attracted Deven and his friends who turned up and asked,"kya hoya Baji bahi?, and before Baji could reply, a couple of Deven's friends dragged this guy outside the hall... Deven came back and complained to his sister, "Divya ye tumhara kaisa dost hai jis ko ladies se baat karne ki tumeiz nahi hai, Bhao ko pata chalta to aska kya hal karte, mein sochna bhi nahi chata'!. Baji returned back to a flustered, "Naku' tu theekh hai na? he asked concerned for her, Naku whispered a feeble yes, and muttered to Baji, as she appealed. "Baji Saab ko kuch maat kehana". He felt her arm, "main Bhao ko kuch nahi bolay ga Naku, tu tension maat laye,"he assured her with a dimpled smile, and sped off to join Dutta, and associates at the bar.

The rest of Divya concerned friends hovered around Naku, and ask if she was alright. Naku was moved by their concern.One of the girl's asked Divya, "waise ye Bhao kaun hai? Divya pointed to the bar where Dutta stood as he towered above everyone else,'kaunse wala'? they chirped as they visually honed in at the men in the bar, "that one ,the tall man in the black pathiani and black waist!" said Divya ,Haiala! they all say loudy; one of them ,says "oh he's so dreamy and solid' ; wow! yaar kya dum dar banda hai, said another! ; Check out the stubble and the studs, real true grit man, threw in another!; kafi graceful aur tall hai; yaar sher jaisa lagte hai! .Naku, with some delight watched but was unsettled a wee bit by their remarks! She glanced his way, he stood totally unaware of the stir he created among these bevy of young beauties!. "Chaal yar Divya ! introduce us to him they all persisted in unison. Divya agreed and led the group towards the bar. Divya walked flanked by Naku on one side and one of her pushy, skimpy dressed friend on the other. As they progressed towards the bar, the atmosphere started to throb with the song, "Oh rabba mein pyar kar ke pachtaye! main ve soocha ek ekla main rahoonga kitna re, O rabba mein pyar kar ke pachtaye!. People at the bar especially the younger crowd, began to move their arms and lower bodies to the rhythm!. Divya stopped a few steps away from Dutta, and announced, "Bhau apne dostoon say ap ko milwana hai'. Dutta who half rested on the bar stool with his left elbow upright on the bar supporting his chin, turned his head sideways to the addressee. Dutta faced Divya first, and then his eyes travelled to Naku. His lips which clenched together, separated spontaneously and give his mouth a heart shaped look!. His eyes narrowed, and shifted to the girl on the other side of Divya. Dutta's eyes unavoidably ,fell on her low cut neckline and her promiscuous eyes, he hastily bit his lower lip from one side and raised his left hand to itch the corner of his lip.The girl, shuffled forward and stood next to him at the bar, placed her elbow on the work top and looked at Dutta ,as if she waited to be asked for a drink. Dutta, dropped his mouth ,maintained his position and revolved his face rather discreetly the other way.The girl ordered a G&T for herself, and still made an effort in attracting Dutta's attention by saying,"Ap kuch laien ge?, Dutta raised his reclined hand and pointed to his lemon fizz already on the work top. The girl started to sip her drink and leaned across to Dutta, and whispered seductivly, "to ap hain, yahaan ke top man". Dutta, moved his head and stole a glance at Naku with a suppressed smile as he could see in her wide eyed look that she was anxious ,due to this girl perched beside him!. He turned and addressed the girl with a half refuted declaration, shyly, "top man tu paata nehin , par Dutta Shree Ram Patil zaroor hoon!".Baji suddenly appeared and intervened between them and announced to the girl, "bola tu ye Dutta Bhau hai, mainay ke Bhau! ,Bhau matlab tumarra, humarra sab ka bhai!".The girl stood snubbed and embarrassed at the intrusion, and Dutta simlingly stood up on his long legs, as the girl looked on. Dutta then stepped forward ,reached for Naku's hand and brought her to his side, gently hanging on to her palm loosely, and proclaimed proudly to the girl, "aur ye meri patni Nakusha hai'. The girl had gazed on disconcerted at Naku's face! Baji swiftly occupied Dutta's bar stool got comfortable with his whiskey glass and said to the girl, "ab aur kiya ap ko maloom karna hai Bhao ki bare mein ? mein ap ko batey ga ,ap poocho, poocho!' Naku gazed up at Dutta who ached to put his arm around her shoulder, after some pause he put his decision in practice and his right hand positioned around her ,as he squeezed her shoulder gently.She blushed, and lowered her green eyes. He looked down in her upturned eyes and smiled at her, the corners of his mouth gravitated to one side of his indented chin with mischief!.He bent, his head slightly and his full lips brushed her ear, and whispered, "Naku tu na kya soocha tera Saab bhek jaye ga? Naku looked up at him as she seethed with affection for him, "nahin Saab, mujhe ap par phora baroosha hai!... To be continued.. Hamlet53
