Take ur time to read this

In 1982, In Singapore, a bill similar to LOKPAL BILL was implemented and 142 Corrupt Ministers & Officers were arrested in one single day.. Today Singapore has only 1% poor people & no taxes are paid by the people to the government, 92% Literacy Rate, Better Medical Facilities, Cheaper Prices, 90% Money is white & Only 1% Unemployment exists.. This uprising or the awareness is excellent and is only the first step towards a corrupt free society. The bigger task is to look inwards and see how in our everyday lives we fight this menace and not give in easily. Ofcourse it is easily said than done, but we have to start somewhere and there is no two ways about it. Sitting in the cosy environs of our homes and blaming the system is all that we and the previous generations have done. The corrupt system cannot thrive without our support to it, Now the time has come where either we fight or drown in the rot. Anna is just the symbol and Thank God for him and many others who have taken up this issue which has awakened the spirits in all of us.

Good that he is practising what he preaches. Because for his business they must be encountering the traffic cops a lot.

Like Mishal, if each one of us consciously practice this at the individual level, the world will be a better place to live in.

The traffic cops, telephone/internet guys, for utility connections, parking cars...the list is endless and for many its become a way of life. We need to bring the change and it needs to start with "me, I, and my"

Since the topic is about traffic cops nd bribing i felt like narrating this incident. Im from delhi nd there r a few stretches where u could zip 100+. One eveng i happened to pass by one such road nd to my horror i was stopped by traffic cops since cameras were fitted for catching overspeeding vehicles. The ticket showed 62km which was 2km above the limit. I argued that since the signages werent there to warn vehicles, and also it was foolish to bar people frm speeding here since it was a 4km long lonely stretch with six lanes. I also joked that then there was no use of the 5th gear in the car. But the cop just handed the ticket which showed Rs 900. I was aghast [incidently fines in delhi have increased 4times]. I asked him what if i refuse to pay the fine. He said the alternative would be that my license would be confiscated and i had to appear before a magistrate on a given date. I agreed and went to the magistrate on the given date. When it was my turn i narrated that in my 10years of driving, this was the first incident and also i was overspeeding only marginally. I also mentioned that the signages on the road werent at proper points. The magistrate was amused at my audacity and let me off without the fine but warned me that it will not be the same next time, he also pointed the cops to correct the placement of the signages.😉

This incident emboldened me to be more proactive than passively accept things or take short cuts by bribing cops or officers. We are responsible for our miseries. We just need to give some thought and time. I know i may sound like some activist, but i vouch from my expreriences with the civic authorities and other agencies, if we can even spare some free time to address the daily small issues like bad roads, garbage collection, street lighting etc.. we can make a huge difference. Better if u can garner some support from friends in the neighbourhood. 😊

@brvr: I agree...mostly we dont want to take the trouble of say going to the magistrate and would rather pay a bribe and escape the trouble. But if we keep at it the corrupt ones would give up.

kshreya i would like to add here that nobody needs to go before a magistrate unless u feel u were wrongly fined. I just thought at that point of time, it was necessary for me to tell the authorities that a board indicating the speed limit was not visible and since i was a first time offender and that too barely by 2kms above the limit, i thought i had a chance of leniency in the fine. Otherwise i could have easily paid the fine nd left, it was not even a bribe in the first place. Anyways, it was good i had this experience, it opened my eyes in many ways.
