Vinayaka Chaturthi, the birthday of the Elephant deity, was celebrated with joy and religious fervour in Tamil Nadu.

The entire state wore a festive look as people lined up especially decorated Ganesh idols in all sizes installed at various places in the state for week-long celebrations.

Children and people from all walks of life, dressed in their best, thronged Vinayka temples and offered special prayers to invoke the blessings of the Elephant deity.

A large number of people visited the ''Uchi Pillayar'' at the Rockfort Temple in Tiruchirapalli and Ganesh temple at Puliapuram in Coimbatore, which boasts of the tallest Ganesh idol in South Asia.

For Children Vinayaka Cathurthi was a day of fun and excitement, apart from a religious festival as they scampered for buying brightfuly coloured clay idols, made in different sizes. As the celebrations are not complete without the umbrella behind the Ganesh idol, decorative umbrellas stole the limelight in markets. Children were seen carrying clay idols and paper made colourful umbrellas right from last evening for the festival.

People also conducted special poojas at their homes, offering ''sundal'', ''kozhukattai'' and ''ell urundai'', the home-made delicacies to the Lord Ganesha.

The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi was celebrated across Tamil Nadu on Sunday with people thronging temples and making 'kozhakattai', a sweet said to be a favourite of the Lord Ganesha.

Devotees offered prayers at temples dedicated to Lord Ganesha. And many houses wore a festive look as several people held special prayers at home too.

The aroma of 'kozhakattai', a rice flour and jaggery dumpling, wafted through many of the kitchen windows. After offering prayers on the occasion, neighbours and friends got together to share 'kozhakattais'.

Roadside vendors did brisk business till Saturday evening, selling Vinayaka idols, flowers and holy arugam grass.

Public celebrations were also held in most parts of capital Chennai with huge Ganesh idols placed inside decorative marquees and loudspeakers blaring devotional songs.
