article from mid-day about Smriti water skiing😉
Smriti's royal Monte Carlo jaunt
Leaving her Tulsi attire back home, Smriti Z Iraani recently attended the prestigious Monte Carlo Television Festival as a jury member in the mini series category. Apart from the official schedule of events, Iraani, accompanied by husband Zubin, also dined with Prince Albert of Monaco.
The actress took time off to water-ski and visited an olive farm in the South of France. Here, Smriti shares the highpoints of her Monte Carlo sojourn with hitList readers….
Not finicky about clothes
I am not very finicky when it comes to choosing clothes and shopping for designer wear. I just threw in a couple of outfits, which I thought would showcase our culture and style, and blend in with the event. My friend Fabeha helped me put my wardrobe together and designed the maroon dress I wore for the Prince's dinner.
Not to forget Nim Sood (Maasi) from Balaji, who stitched all my fancy blouses at very short notice. I don't know how I would have managed without her. The one outfit that stands out is my pink sari (I bought it in Valsad). That was an amazing moment — standing on stage in Monte Carlo, next to blue bloods, wearing my Valsad sari! I also picked a Ritu Kumar kurta at a sale.
Only Indian on the jury
Filmmaker Masayoshi Zeniaya and I were the only two Asians on the jury panel. Prince Albert couldn't believe that women in India are so progressive. One thing I noticed is the lack of exposure our work and culture gets in that part of the world.
They think Indian women spend most of their time sitting home, cooking in their ghungats. I told them women have penetrated almost every sphere of work here. They were shocked to hear that there were lots of women producers and directors. Indian television has huge potential, but needs the right channel.
Getting back at Zubin
I always wanted to try out water sports. Zubin said women keep saying things, but never have the courage to do them. This was my chance to get back at him — I tried water-skiing, which was totally amazing.
I also wanted to go paragliding, but the instructor said the wind currents weren't favourable. I rode a water scooter instead, and showed Zubin I was a woman of my word.
