After the many soap operas on TV have given your tear ducts a workout for the last half decade,it's now time for your adrenalin glands to rejoice too! And this is simply because of number of thrillers being churned out on TV these days.
While the detective series CID has been around for a long time,it now has two versions,CID Special Bureau and CID Files; a statement of the show's success.
In the detective department, there also is Special Squad, which takes the viewers through the process of solving murders, kidnappings, and encounter cases, with its coterie of stylish crime busters.
Gauri Pradhan,Nandini of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi,has recently been added to the star cast to lead the squad. Just like Gauri was in a soap opera, and now acts in a thriller,Aakashdeep Saigal too plays the dreaded terrorist Osama in Time Bomb.
The idea of having these action thrillers is to break the monotony of melodrama. So,while CID,Special Squad and Time Bomb have been around for a while now,the newest entrant is Koh-I-noor,which offers its share of action and suspense. The show is about finding the real Kohinoor diamond.
As channel COO Purnendu Bose says,"We wanted to create something for audiences who don't watch soap operas. This is an attempt to prove that the thriller genre can work fine."
As director of Time Bomb,Ketan Mehta corroborates,"We cannot assume that there is only the soap-opera-loving audience in the country. There are different kinds of audiences, and there has to be material for the section that loves thrillers. Why must they turn to only international projects to satiate their appetite?"
Reality shows are also being looked at as an outlet for some TV thrills 'n spills. Fear Factor India is one such show. Like the original Fear Factor, this will have some action-packed real life stunts.
As Chintan Mohite,a college student says,"It's good that Indian tele serial-makers are waking up to the fact that there are guys like me who are not interested in knowing who's the saas of which bahu, but want serials that really pack a punch!"
