'Dance is a form of expression for me'

By: Priya Janardan
April 3, 2004

After choreographing stage shows, music albums and films, Hitesh Tejwani is all set to enter the film industry as a director.

Today, the budding director and brother of actor Hiten Tejwani, (Karan of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi) is busy assisting director Santram Varma, director of Krishna Cottage.

Excerpts from the interview:

What prompted you to become a choreographer?
I loved dancing and wanted to take it up as my career. Luckily, everyone appreciated my uninhibited dancing style and I started getting offers for choreographing stage shows. This helped me get recognition as a
choreographer. Dance is a form of expression for me.

How did you get your first break in Hindi films?
I learnt that Farah Khan was auditioning for Yash Chopra's film Mohabbatein. I went for the audition and was selected. She liked my dancing style and asked me to join her troupe.

As a part of her troupe I did films like One Two Ka Four, Gadar, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Sharaarat and Legend of Bhagat Singh among
others.

How would you rate Farah Khan as a choreographer?
I've always liked Farah Khan's inimitable dance style. She is a sensitive director and knows her job extremely well. The way she brings every character to life is amazing.

How was it working for the remix album Abhi To Main Jawaan Hoon?
I had worked earlier with DJ Amit who is from Delhi. He had liked my work and approached me to work for his remix album. I choreographed the remix version of song Aye Meri Jourajabhi from the movie Waqt.

This new remix song was woven around the new and the old generation. So, to choreograph this song was a difficult task. I took a note of the old version of the song sung by actor Balraj Sahani in the film Waqt . I gave the dancers simple steps to make the song look authentic.

Why did you decide to become a film director?
Although my song became a hit I did not receive any good offers. Also I was fascinated with direction. I felt that I had the talent to be a good director. The best way to get familiar with the atmosphere was to assist someone. So I joined Santram Varma.

What are your future plans?
I'll be assisting Santram in his forthcoming movies. Everyday is a new experience for me and I am learning the intricacies of this craft.
