Along with Tulsi, Baa, Mihir and other prominent characters, Jaya Bhattacharya who played Payal (Tulsi's biggest foe) in Kyunkii Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi also enjoyed her share of popularity.
However, after the first generation leap (that was two years ago), Jaya's character gradually faded into obscurity and she moved on to other Balaji shows such as Kesar and Kaisa Yeh Pyar Hai. And now after a brief sabbatical, Jaya is back on television with two new Balaji shows, Thodi Si Zameen Thoda Sa Aasman and Karam Apna Apna.
"Actually, I was off work for some time. I was waiting for the right kind of offers. And that happened when Smriti and Shobhaji approached me for Thodi Si Zameen," says Jaya who plays a shadow dancer in the new weekend soap on Star Plus that is set against the backdrop of the textile mill workers' strike of early 80s.
"My character lives in the same chawl where Uma (Smriti) lives. Although my character has a problem-ridden life, she is a very helpful person. Such people exist in society. They can't solve their own problems but are always ready to help others. It's a well-defined role and important in the course of the narrative," she says.
In Karam Apna Apna, which goes on air on Star Plus on August 29, Jaya plays a Punjabi housewife. "I play a woman whose husband is a philanderer. She is in a loveless marriage and takes care of her kids—it's a nice emotional role," says Jaya, who feels that while she isn't a Balaji favourite. All the same, she admits that they approach her whenever they have a good role for her. "I have proved myself on television and they know I can deliver," she says. "I can't go around asking for work. It comes my way without running around for it. I was seen on TV and received offers to act in films. I did a couple of films and now I am back on TV."
