'When I cut my hair, I was crying from inside'

TV baddie Aakashdeep Saigal tells Priyanka Deladia how difficult it was to shed his bad-boy image

Remember the story of Samson, the great warrior hero, whose hair was the source of his strength? TV baddie Aakashdeep Saigal would know what it would feel like to be Samson!
Who could forget the image of Ansh in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi? And remember his bluecoloured lenses and long, poker straight blonde-dyed locks perfectly complimenting his bad boy image on the small screen? For three long years, he continued to terrorise the sanity of the saasbahu drama viewers. Not for too long now… His bad boy image has been replaced in a snip — he recently bid adieu to his long hair to fit into the character of Kush, a complete contrast to the Ansh we know. "When I cut my hair, I was crying from the inside. Even now, when I think of it, it feels as though a part of me has been taken away," he laments.
While for some people, his hairstyle was a fashion statement and "very cool", there were always exceptions. However, one thing that will never change, will be his associated with it, "Women would walk up to me and tell me how they envy my hair. I am going to
miss it terribly," he adds.
Doing a woman's job isn't an easy task for a man, and Aakashdeep knows that. "I respect all women. They put in so much effort into taking care of their hair. You have no idea how much care I had to take."
To a large extent, he owes his success to his villainous image. "Ansh made Aakashdeep. Before Ansh happened, I was part of the fashion industry for four years, I had also acted in two movies but within six months of playing that character, I was a hit," he says. But doesn't playing a bad boy invite a lot of negative fan following? "People hated me. I would receive a lot of threat calls, asking me not to harm Nandini, or else... but that just means I am so much more convincing as an actor," he says.
And while most actors on television today are quitting because of pre-mature graying on their shows, Aakashdeep feel that his new hairstyle is making him look 20 years younger on screen. Will it be difficult playing a good boy? "It won't be, because I'm a nice guy," he earnestly says.
