Kamalika Guha Thakurta seems to have disappeared from the small screen. As Gayatri, she's been missing from Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. Her character Revathy in Ba Bahoo aur Baby, too, has disappeared. So what has Kamel (as she is known in telly circles) been up to?
"Chilling out," she proclaims. "I am enjoying myself doing things at my own pace. Moreover, I am looking at this break as the much-needed time to get back into shape. I'm big time into dieting and gymming. Being a Bengali, it is so tough not having rice and sweets. But I am trying hard to be in shape."
Spiritual trip
After the generation leap in Kyunki, Gayatri has vanished from the Balaji daily. "I guess Gayatri is there in some corner of the house who will appear on the scene when needed. And as far Baa Bahoo Aur Baby, new characters were introduced so Revathy has been in hibernation. But the producers have told me she will be back in the show."
However, Kamalika sees the timing of her break from television as perfect. "My daughter Khushi has just begun school (Jamnabai Narsee) so I am there for her."
The actress also took time off for a trip to Vaishnodevi with husband Rajnish Lal, who is in advertising. "I planned this for a long time and finally the visit was fruitful. It was an exhilarating experience. At one point, I thought I would never be able to climb up all the way to the shrine, but I finally made it and it was worth every step."
Filmi chakkar
Though the actress made her television debut in the Zee show, Mujhe Chand Chahiye, she started her acting career in films. She has featured in Gautam Ghosh's Padma Nadir Maji and Rituparno Ghosh's Anteshti. "Padma Nadir Maji was a huge Indo-Bangla project which had Rupa Ganguly in it. As for televison, it was only a chance visit to Mumbai that landed me a role in Mujhe Chand Chahiye. I remember I had to rush to Santa Cruz market to buy a sari as the producers wanted me to audition in a sari. I had worn it over my salwar kurta and just completely went for a lark. I was back in Kolkata, when I received a call saying that I was on for the show. I was taken by complete surprise and then one TV assignment led to another."
Kamalika is looking at doing films as well as television. "I am working towards a new me ready for a new innings in acting," says Kamalika, who is also seen on stage in the Hindi play Tea Coffee or Me.
