Kiran's art of recycling

MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE: Kiran Dubey with her glass creations

Actress Kiran Dubey has found a new calling in life —- creating artefacts out of old and waste materials like empty bottles, broken wood pieces, mirror frames and unused shimmery fabrics and objects.

She terms it as her "suppressed artistic side, which has now finally found a way out."

In the last two months, Kiran's Andheri home has been doubling up as her workshop.

"I am just doing one show at present — Jet Set Go (Star One), which is a weekly, so there is plenty of time on hand. Besides gymming, taking care of my health, reading and watching good cinema, I have rediscovered myself in the last few months."

It all began with an empty bottle lying around. "I shopped for paints, glitter and artificial flowers. Some deft strokes saw the bottle take a spanking new shape. Then there was this wooden mirror frame that looked extremely dull.

I applied a coat of bright paint and stuck some broken ear-ring pieces to it. It turned into an attractive wall hanging. A hotelier friend has supplied me with several empty bottles and I'm busy sprucing them up as display objects."

Feel connected

The actress feels that the rat race of life leavesher with little time to do what she relates to and which appeals to her sensibilities. "I am glad I have found another calling besides just acting in life. I feel truly gifted by indulging in this artistic pursuit.

During my growing up years in Dehradun I used to see my mother, Mala, indulge in crochet. She was a singer and played the sitar as well. I was always inclined towards art and craft — towards all the beautiful things in life. After all these years, I feel liberated. My outlook to life has turned positive. It is all about doing something you enjoy and connect with."

Designer line

Kiran plans to hold an exhibition by the year-end after the collection is large enough. "I have not yet thought of what to call my line. Maybe it will be Dreams, Horizon or Astitva. My ultimate dream is to open a gift shop where I could have something for every person, which will help people connect to the other person."
