Achint Kaur - She is different
She looks different, she acts different. She lives her life differently too. Achint Kaur believes in living life on her own terms, says Nalini Uchil.

Like her name, Achint comes across as a person without a care or worry. The brooding problem kid of Saaya and Banegi Apni Baat is far from it in real life. Easy-going, cheerful and talking nineteen-to-the-dozen that is Achint Kaur.

Unlike all those teeming others who take up acting because it is the one thing that they ever wanted to do in life, Achint took up acting quite by accident. "I had never ever wanted to be an actress. I had never acted in my life, not even in a school play!" she says incredulously. "I was into sports," says Achint who was the number two athlete at the state level in UP in her time. "I have always been out of the house, either trekking or para-jumping. Watching movies or television was not something I did," she says. "Even today, I don't watch much television and when I do I am so critical of what I see!"
Achint returns to the small screen after a hiatus with Dhadkan on Sony.

For a TV actress, Achint is very critical of the quality of work on television today. "The daily soaps have turned actors into full-time labourers. You cannot enjoy your work because there is no time to improve your performance because you are working at break-neck speed. I have even done one episode a day! That is why I did nothing for eight-months. I refused 16 offers, in the bargain lost out on lots of money, but I could not work at that pace. I need my space and I want to live my life," she says clearly.

She came out of hibernation with Dhadkan, a serial that deals with the lives of those connected to the medical profession. Achint plays the role of an ambitious CEO of the hospital. "Although my role is that of smart, manipulative and shrewd woman who smoothly operates to get funds for the hospital, there is a sweet side to her like all human beings. She is definitely not a negative character," she says vehemently. "I am tired of protesting that everybody who is not a goody-goody character is not a negative character, but now I have given up," she says flailing her long hands in the air.

While Dhadkan is on air currently on the Sony channel, Achint is also shooting for Ravi Rai's Parchaiyee in which she plays a character who resembles the one played by Glen close in Fatal Attraction.

She took up acting for the sheer heck of it when it was offered to her by a family friend who was planning a TV programme. Starting as an anchor with a show called Kintu Parantu, she followed it up with hosting a road show produced by Subhash Ghai on Doordarshan. Before she knew Banegi Apni Baat was in her kitty. "I was so raw when I took up Banegi Apni Baat. It was producers Tony and Deeya who took pains to shape me as an actress. That was my learning ground."

Her performance in Banegi Apni Baat was noticed by all. Here was an actress who was different. She was this long-limbed, sinewy girl who looked more like a ramp model than an actress. A girl who did not conform to the regular celebrity image in the least. Neither in her career nor in her personal life.

Married at 16 to an army officer, this small town girl from Meerut moved from one posting to another with her husband. "If you are married to a person in the armed forces you have no identity of your own, you are at best your spouse's shadow," she points out matter-of-factly. It was during her husband's Mumbai posting that her son was born. But the marriage had hit rough weather. She continued to live in Mumbai while her hubby was away on posting. "My marriage was beginning to get messy. We were both living separately. I moved out of Navy Nagar after five years with my son, my dog Scooby and my maid," she says pointing to her maid who still continues to be with her.

Contrary to what one might imagine, it wasn't her acting career that had caused the rift in the marriage. "I was already separated when I took up acting. Acting and modelling happened almost simultaneously. Before I knew if I wanted to do it as a career, I was acting in serials."

She made a successful acting debut after motherhood. Just when one expected to see more of her on every channel she all but vanished. "I took an eight month break from acting because it was getting to me. Every other offer I was getting wanted me to play the character I played in Banegi Apni Baat or Saaya." While the other actresses want to play characters younger than their age, Achint is in search of roles closer to her age. "People forget that I am 31 now and want to play characters my age," she says.

She does not play the conventional goody-goody girl. Her characters have always been complex with visible shades of grey. She is yet to play the docile, pallu-covered daughter-in-law in the era of saas-bahu sagas that have invaded the Indian television. "Oh I'd love to play the 'Indian' woman but not the kind seen on Indian television at the moment. I would like to play the 'arty', the independent, Indian woman. But with my kind of looks, people think I only suit the suit-clad corporate-world type of woman." The fact that she does not socialise enough for people to know any better doesn't help matters either. "I am not a party-goer. This year I have been to only one party and that was the launch of my own serial Dhadkan!"

Ironically, the very looks that put her apart from other actresses, belie the real Achint. Sitting in her tastefully, yet simply, done-up apartment, looking every bit a ramp model sporting her newly cropped haircut, she says, "Everybody tells me I look like a ramp model but I have never done ramp shows. Perhaps, someday somebody might just offer me a chance and I will do it," she says and goes on to add, "In real life I am a typical housewife. I do all the household chores including my grocery shopping. I have to teach my son. In general, I do everything a normal Indian woman does around the house... to the point of being boring!" she grins.

She has done cookery classes and tailoring as well she says with pride! Not one to be embarrassed about anything she says, "I have never hidden anything about my life, not even the fact that I am living with my fianc." For the uninitiated, Achint and TV host and actor Mohan Kapoor live together like one happy family with Achint's son, not to forget Scooby and the maid! "I enjoy cooking and feeding and Mohan loves eating," she says happily.

The decision to move into a live-in relationship was obviously not an easy one for Achint. "My family back in Meerut had a tough time accepting Mohan," she says. But even then she did not believe in hiding the truth about their relationship. Achint believes in the "right" and "wrong" in an industry which is by and large amoral in its thinking.

Achint makes her screen debut in Sur. She also has a small part in Anupam Kher's Om Jai Jagdish. Unfortunately for her both roles have her in the corporate mould but she enjoyed her work in both the films and is looking forward to more meaningful roles. " I definitely want to act for the next ten years at least!" she says but adds wistfully, "I don't want acting to be my bread and butter. I have these business plans in my head which I hope to fulfil someday when I have enough money and then I would love to act simply for the love of it and the perks that go with being a known face!" she says happily.

Just do a little math!

She was 31 in 2002, so 4 years later, she is 35 now!

Hope that helps,
Mridang 😊
