No offense to Aamir Ali fans, as I'm one myself, but I think that he's partly the reason for this leap. Here's my theory on why they're doing this:

Aamir doesn't seem like the kind of person, who wants to do one role for a long time. KDMH had only been planned to continue till the 80th episode, which might have been what he signed up for. Then, because of the popularity of the show maybe, Ekta decided to prolong it - however, Aamir may not have been so happy about that, but might have - out of loyalty or I don't know - agreed to continue. Then - for whatever reason - he might have declared that he wanted to leave the show, and Ekta - not knowing what to do as one of the main lead was leaving - decided to do this leap. That way she can explain Rahul's departure, and still continue the show.

Look. I'm not saying that Aamir's a bad person for wanting to leave the show. But I am hoping that he will reconsider and stay. Because I don't want him to leave, and there's no KDMH without him and Kakun.

How did I get to this theory? Because why would Ekta deliberately make a leap, knowing that loyal fans would be upset and leave the show? She may be evil at times, but she's not stupid. Even after all the emails we all sent, the pleading we did, the threats - she's still doing the leap, which means that she might be short on choices here.
