Rishabh had only one woman of his own free will in his life - Preeta.

Whatever feelings he had for Sherlyn was more like she is my wife, I can see us working out more of a compromise.

The only other possibility was Shrishti getting married to Rishabh if Shrishti had sat in place of Sherlyn at the mandap - the usual bride swap.

Looking back at how the balloon first went to Karan and then ended up with Rishabh, Rishta were meant to get married.

But at one point he loved sherlin as her betrayal pain is not bearable for him.

Could be wrong. But this is what i think.

Karan enters after leap. Gives rishta tough time. Finds out child is his. Seeks custody. Preeran marriage still considered valid as divorce never happened. Rishta becomes invalid. Rishab advises her to return to her husband. Preeran united with their kid but as usual can't get along. Karan and his tantrums and the annoyed preeta. She will realize she doesn't feel the same for him. Later she finds out she loves rishab.
