Dee don't know about any superstition. But you aren't supposed to intentionally kill one. In south India especially, they are worshipped although also all over India. Where my mom lived, if you would accidentally kill a snake, they would be cremated and stuff like a dead human was.

Naag is devta!
They have temples for Naag only in some places. Many mythological references are there for Naag na? It protected Lord Krishna when he was born and was brought across a river...
