OK friends here goes...sorry for the delay.
Chapter 16
Nidhi slowly opened her eyes from a drunken stupor and tried to focus on her husband's face looking at her. She gradually became aware of her surroundings as she took in the hospital walls, the intravenous drip, the partition and the beeping monitor somewhere beyond her line of vision.
"Hey Doc...How are you feeling now?" Ashutosh restrained her from getting up abruptly. "Aur ab batao, thele ki chat kaisi thi?"
Nidhi was startled to the core: how did he know? Did Anjie confess? Her thoughts were interrupted with Ashutosh's guffaws and she tried to explain, thoroughly embarrassed, "Woh Kya hai na, mujhe bahut man kar raha tha khane ko...isiliye..."Her brain was working overtime to figure out the source of his knowledge, when he said, "isne chugli ki..." and gestured towards her stomach. "ha, abhi paida bhi nahin hua aur apne papa ka chamcha ban gaya..." Nidhi patted her stomach affectionately.
"Par Nidhi, you should have told me...chat khane ka man tha to ghar par hi kuchh hygienic bana dete na...kal ki raat to tumne dara hi diya..." Ashutosh cupped her face, "aur woh Dr Bharati ne to ek lamba chauda bhashan hi dediya..." and blushed beetroot red.
"Sorry..." Nidhi pinched her earlobes with a guilty expression on her face. "Waise, aapko zindagi mein kissi se to darte dekha...Dr Bharati se...unhone aisa kya kaha jo aap itne Sharma rahe hai?" Nidhi sniffing the air, giggled and Ashutosh hastily changed the subject. "Theek hai, ek kaam karte hai...next Sunday, let's have a homemade chat session...we'll invite everyone!! OK? But promise me one thing: if you feel like eating something you will let me know? AND NO SECRETS FROM ME PLEASE!!!..." Ashutosh had grown serious.
The next sunday was a treat. HK had planned for a full range of chat, ranging from panipuri to vegetable sandwich for people with a weak constitution. MM resembled a clubhouse of people of all age ranges, physical attributes and mental capabilities, without the worldly hassles, entirely on vacation. Anjie and Ranganath canoodled in a corner, DB gave suggestions on "how to make the perfect panipuri" and BB smiled paternally. Col Verma helped himself to a samosa while Solanki uncle looked longingly at another helping of Bhatoore, only to be admonished by Shyama aunty, who had walked out of the kitchen with a plate of crisp paneer pakoras in search of Nidhi.
Ashutosh was also searching for Nidhi and found her staring out of the bedroom window, lost in thought. He crept up to her and put his arms around her, whispering in her ear, "yeh sab tumhare liye plan kiya aur tum ho ki aise gumsum yahan khadi ho...kya baat hai? "Kuchh nahin, bahar thoda ji ghabra gaya...felt restless to yahan aakar khadi thi..." Nidhi added, "aur wahan thodi thand bhi hai na..." and shivered as a cool draught came in through the open window.
Ashutosh closed the window, got a shawl from the wardrobe and put it across Nidhi's shoulders and asked with a naughty glint, "are you still feeling cold? Maybe I can help further? Nidhi pushed him away, "chaliye, ghar mein itne saare log hai aur aap hai ki..." Ashutosh pulled her back in his arms, "to kya? saare logon ko pata chalne do...
Shyama aunty cleared her throat hastily and the two lovebirds sprang apart, "nahin mein sirf yeh pakode Nidhi ke liye lekar aayi thi...usse bahut pasand hai...ab chalti houn..." She delicately placed the plate on a table and left, closing the door behind her.
Days flew by...it was late January and the city shivered with temperatures close to zero. DB went on a knitting overdrive to accommodate Nidhi's cold intolerance and surreptitiously for someone else, much to the chagrin of Col Verma. Ashutosh arranged for a fireplace in their bedroom when extra blankets and room heaters didn't help ward away the cold. Both he and BB were apprehensive for Nidhi's health as she shivered throughout the night, no matter how many sweaters or blankets were piled on her. Was this unique throughout the pregnancy, Ashutosh wondered as he cuddled closer to her on such a bitterly cold night.
Then one day Ashutosh had woken up somewhere in the early hours of morning to the sound of Nidhi retching in the bathroom. He reached for his spectacles, put them on, and had got out of the bed to investigate when the door of the bathroom opened and she came out, dabbing her face with a napkin.
"Nidhi, are you alright?" He asked as she came and sat down heavily on her side of the bed and wiped the sweat off her brow. She looked pale and drained out, with a slight baby bump visible to the trained eye. Nausea had hit her early in the morning and she had retched her insides out in the bathroom sometime ago. Even her one-time favourite AKC was an absolute no-no as she could not tolerate the smell of ginger without the tsunami of nausea hitting her.
"Baba, is this normal?" Ashutosh was highly concerned about Nidhi's health. Her system just couldn't tolerate anything edible without getting quesy. "You can get the answer in any standard ob-gyn textbook, else why don't you ask Dr Bharati?" Ashutosh would have preferred to read the ob-gyn textbook any day, as BB continued, "BTW, these things clear off once she crosses the first trimester, which she will in a couple of days. Secondly, you anyway need to take Nidhi for an ultrasound appointment next week; I have made an entry in my diary..."
These ultrasound appointments were something that Ashutosh would have really avoided given a choice. Dr Bharati insisted that he accompany Nidhi for each scan, and he felt acutely embarrassed at each visit wherein he had to sit in the waiting area. Still smarting from the innuendo of the last visit, wherein she had told him to avoid getting intimate in a sufficiently loud voice, he had requested Dr Ranganath to help him out.
"I understand Sir!!" Dr Ranganath smiled with a thorough understanding of the whole issue. By now the entire KGH knew about his being ticked off Dr Bharati, Ashutosh rued, "You see, Dr Ranganath, shaadi ke baad yeh sab zhamele hote hai...Kabhi kabhi sochta houn ki mein bachelor hi achha tha..."
"Kya baat kar rahe hai, Sir, agar Nidhi ya Anjie ne sun liya to...Nidhi Madam ko to aap sambhal lenge sir, magar Anjie to...OHH MY GOD!!" Dr Ranganath could not even imagine his fate in case of the eventuality. Ashutosh interrupted him before he could embark on the trip to the horror-land,
"Khair woh chhodiye...now tell me what you are going to do so that I can avoid being there?"
"Best, Sir, Aap OT mein chale jayiye aur apna mobile cabin mein chhod jayiye...Dr Bharati ko mein bata doonga ki emergency case tha...Ya phir...apna mobile saath mein le jayiye, mein sahi waqt par aapko phone kar deta houn ki ek emergency ka case aaya hai...choice is yours... and before I forget, Anjie aapke liye kuchh chhodke gayi hai..." and he handed over a small envelope to Ashutosh.
Ashutosh opened the envelope to find a strand of wool. Ranganath hastened to explain, "Sir woh Nidhi ki DB ne diya hai, woh aapko phone bhi karengi..." Ashutosh was interrupted by a call on his mobile; it was Dr Bharati, asking him to be there in the ultrasound room at once. "I don't know what it is now" Ashutosh thought as he hurried to the ultrasound room, mentally gearing up for another dressing down. But surprisingly Dr Bharati didn't have much to comment this time, as she handed over the report to Nidhi, with a "everything is fine" diagnosis.
Ashutosh was driving sedately back home when he suddenly remembered DB's request for some additional wool. She had called him sometime after lunch, "Arre Daktar, mera ek kaam karenge? Woh main Nidhi ke liye ek sweater bun rahi thi na, thodi wool cum pad gayi...ab main to arthritis ki wajah se zyaada bahar ja nahi sakti, tumhi la do!!! Maine Anjie ko sample diya hai, woh Dr Ranganath ke yahan hai...please beta..." He stopped the car in the market.
"Ab kyoun ruk gaye?" Nidhi asked.
"Tumhari DB ke liye wool leni thi...iss colour ki..." Ashutosh removed the envelope from his packet. Nidhi suddenly remembered something as they entered the wool shop, "Main bhi kuchh bhool gayi...mujhe bhi lena hai..." and asked for a couple of bundles of baby blue coloured wool. Ashutosh watched fascinated as the salesman was trying to match the colour of the wool sample with the stock in the shop, and heaved a sigh of relief when the exact matching shade was found. He was glad that he had avoided getting into these "ladies" issues so far, and hoped that this was the last time. But that was not to be as Nidhi came to a halt next to a saree shop.
"Suniye Ji, ek saree leni hai...BB ne godbharai ke liye lene ko kaha hai..." She clutched his arm.
"OK, go ahead and choose what you want..." Ashutosh was clearly indulgent.
Nidhi chose a saree with cream colour border and displayed it, "yeh kaisi hai?
"Achchi hai, le lo..." Ashutosh heaved a sigh of relief as the saree was shortlisted and paid for.
"Iska blouse, petticoat, fall-pico?" Nidhi was hell bent on pulling his leg.
"Ab yeh sab kya hota hai?" he was incredulous.
Nidhi smiled at him with an expression that went like "well, this is the beginning...you had also offered to buy a wardrobe for me in the past!!" It was late evening when they finished their shopping. Ashutosh had hoped to go home, at least now, when Nidhi grasped his arm,
"Suniye Ji, I am hungry...
"How about hot soup? Woh AKC to ab pasand nahin hai na?" Ashutosh was trying to be reasonable, given her "chat episode followed by cramps" history. There was a snack bar nearby.
"No, I want samosa...followed by a hot chocolate..." Nidhi demanded.
"Nidhi...samosa is not a hygienic dish...and..." the Doctor protested.
"I want that and that alone...and you promised!!!" Nidhi pouted, one hand supporting her baby bump. She was looking very cute these days, with a slightly midriff, her hair tied in a ponytail and a stray lock of hair hanging over her face.
"OK, Madam...anything you wish..." Ashutosh surrendered with a smile. He remembered something and got up, after the waiter had departed with their order, "OK, let me also buy something for you...hope you will like it...I have never ventured in this area before...wait here" and returned shortly with a small bundle of something wrapped in an old newspaper.
"Why should I tell you? tumhare secrets hai aur mere nahin?" was his reply after Nidhi had raised her eyebrows.
Dinner was a quiet affair; neither Ashutosh nor Nidhi had much of appetite, given their binge session on samosa and hot chocolate. Ashutosh had given up any sort of control once the hot steaming samosas had arrived; the steaming cup of hot chocolate had only served to take the matters further.
"Nidhi...can you please come here?" Ashutosh called from the bedroom after the dinner; Nidhi was helping HK in the kitchen in post dinner cleaning. "Achha Beti, you go...ab bas ho gaya na...take rest..." HK banished Nidhi out of the kitchen.
Ashutosh was standing near the dressing table when Nidhi entered the bedroom, hair still in a ponytail, but the stray lock sternly tucked behind the earlobe.
"Kya hua? Aur yeh haath mein kya hai?" Nidhi was curious.
"Secret...tumhare liye...ab yahan aao aur aankhein bandh karo..." Ashutosh ordered.
"Theek hai..." Nidhi went to him with an outstretched palm and closed her eyes.
Ashutosh placed the contents of the bundle in Nidhi's outstretched hands. Nidhi opened her eyes to find a gajra of fresh flowers, their fragrance was heavenly. Nidhi's eyes widened and she delicately picked up the strand and sniffed it, inhaling with a deep breath.
"Liked it? Pehli baar tumne yeh baal iss tarah bandhe hai na...I felt tempted"... Ashutosh's reaction was a mix of curiosity bordering on apprehension.
"Aap hi laga dijiye na..." Nidhi turned her back to him.
"Theek hai...give me a comb...let me pamper my wife today..." Ashutosh delicately released Nidhi's hair from the ponytail and let his fingers run through the long tresses. His fingers were tantalizing, weaving magic with her hair... and Nidhi was lost in thoughts, staring in space. He just couldn't control himself any longer and his arms enveloped her in a back hug.
"Kya soch rahi ho? Achha nahi laga?" Ashutosh murmured in her ear, his senses taking in the fragrance of her hair. He had pleated her hair neatly and pinned the gajra, she looked like an angel.
"Nahin, kuchh nahi..." her voice had a quiver in it as she rapidly blinked to clear her vision. He turned her around and cupped her face, "Kuchh purani baatein yaad aa gayi...aapne uss din woh Mallika ke baal banaye the na...Aisa laga ki aapne mere seene mein ek khanjar ...Nidhi stopped speaking as Ashutosh put a finger on her lips, his eyes pleading for her to forgo those memories. Nidhi buried her head in his chest, sobbing quietly as his hands continued to caress her back. He just let her cry, to get the bitterness out of her system, as her shoulders heaved and trembled.
"Achha yeh batao, Dr Bharati ne kya kaha? Did you see the heartbeat? How big is the baby now?" A barrage of questions poured out from Ashutosh in order to divert Nidhi's attention from the past bitterness. Nidhi looked up and smiled through her tears, "Ha, sab theek hai, unhone ek baat aur kahi which might interest you..."
"And what's that?" Ashutosh cupped her chin to meet his gaze.
"Ab woh restrictions nahi rahe jinki wajah se aapko last time sunana pada tha..." Nidhi blushed and hid her face in his chest once again, "and that means I can compensate you for the past..."
"It won't be that easy...I am going to charge a heavy interest for that..." Ashutosh gathered her in his arms.
Nidhi did not care for the rate of interest after that... all her awareness was personified as a crazy boat in the ocean of pleasure till a large wave came, lifted her high and crashed over her...
