I tried hard to understand Ashu today and this is what I could make of him...it was a combination of factors that prompted him to say what he did to DB...in questioning his relationship with Mallika, DB had indirectly questioned the strength of his commitment to Nidhi...she had questioned his love and dedication to her...I think this was what riled him...
Mature or otherwise, he responded with an open challenge to DB...shut your eyes to what is happening or take your baby and leave...he knew there was no way Nidhi was going to leave with DB...he knew that would effectively establish the strength of his relationship with Nidhi, the strength of their love and trust and also his hold over her...it was probably also a way to show her that, unlike in the past, Nidhi was going to choose him over her family everytime..this must have been what prompted him subconsciously to say what he did...and yet, while noting Nidhi's reation, he realized that he had gone too far and had ended up hurting her...in trying to prove their love, he had unwittingly caused her pain...and his regret was plainly visible..
subsequently, when he came to their room, he was a little taken aback to see that Nidhi was upset over DB's exit..here he was secure in the thoguht that he and his feelings alone mattered most to Nidhi...and here, Nidhi was upset over DB's feelings...the old insecurities cropped up and he said pretty much the same thing to her...while he may not have wanted to accept it, he knew Nidhi was right in pointing out the flaws in Mallika' s behaviour...he had no defence for it..he still tried to use the ANjie/Rohan argument to re-establish that it was friendship and nothing more...I have a sneaking feeling this line is going to come back to bite him real hard and quite soon...and when Nidhi pointed out that he had not taken her consent before bringing Mallika home, he was left with no choice but to respond with chauvinism...he knew he was wrong and she was right...and yet his ego would not let him accept it and so he threw the whole 'this is my house' line at her...
Unfortunately, he did not account for Nidhi's self-esteem and her quiet dignity...she wasted no time in offering to leave and even executed her threat...this of course shook Ashu to the core...what had started out as a fight to establish the depth of his emotions for Nidhi had now escalated into a situation where he was practically alienating her...all trace of ego dissolved pronto and he had no qualms breaking down and beseeching her to stay...
What all of this makes Ashu guilty of is naivete...he is seeing things in black and white...can't see the greys in between...despite her being much younger than him and despite her occasional juvenile behaviour, Nidhi has proved far more adept at negotiating the complexities of relationships...!
