Bade Ache Lagte Hain
(Hema Singh in Kairi... Rishta Khatta
Meetha)
Bahus' worst nightmare, favourites
with GECs - the mean MILs are ruling
eyeballs
Taunts, abuses, conversation laced
with dollops of sarcasm, devilish glint
in their eyes, the odd slap and
atyaachar seem to be the defining
feature of screen MILs. The evil
saas-es are back and how! Small
screen's docile (and even the not so
docile) bahus need to take a deep
breath and brace themselves to face
the plotting of the mean ma-in-laws.
General entertainment channels
(GECs) are replete with soap sagas
about monster-in-laws who can
reduce their bechaari bahus to tears!
There's the cruel Imarti Devi (Hema
Singh) in Kairi...Rishta Khatta
Meetha, cunning Niharika Kapoor (Eva
Grover) in Bade Achche Lagte Hain,
sarcastic Bhabho (Neelu Waghela) in
Diya Aur Baati Hum, strict Mrs
Kaushik ( Vibha Chhibber) in Mrs.
Kaushik Ki Paanch Bahuein, ever
taunting Manorama Raizada
(Utkarsha Naik) in Iss Pyaar Ko Kya
Naam Doon?, Savita Deshmukh (Usha
Nadkarni) in Pavitra Rishta, Kokila
Modi (Rupal Patel) in Saath Nibhana
Saathiya are some of the meanie MILs
with new names being added to the
evergrowing list.
Why are such mother-in- laws
generating interest amongst
audiences? Sudhir Sharma, a producer
says, "Mother-in-laws are always
appealing with an 'evil' side to them
(keeping in tune with stereotypes). A
TV show needs twists and that's where
the mother-in-law comes into the
picture. If she fits in the storyline of
the show, they definitely grab
eyeballs. Remember in Bollywood Lalita
Pawar is remembered as the wicked
mother-in- law and even Bindu? "
Agrees producer Rajan Shahi, "A
suffering bahu has a huge mass
appeal and the scheming saas also
generates interest. It might be a
stereotype, a negative saas brings in
a lot of drama."
Some producers opine that a good
mother-in-law is not neccesarily an
attraction in daily soaps. Asit Kumarr
Modi says, "We had a good saas in
Hamaari Saas Leela, but the show
wasn't well accepted. It is tough to
break the stereotypical images. The
more horrible a saas becomes in her
interactions, the better are the
chances of high TRPs." Producer Shahi
Mittal says, "The saas on the small
screen has to be portrayed as strict
and negative. We like to stress the
point that they are 'mother-in-laws',
not 'mothers'. A saas making her bahu
suffer is an evergreen recipe for
successful soaps."
Even those, who play these characters
find it a tough call to digest their
roles. Eva Grover who plays the role of
a mean MIL in Bade Ache Lagte Hain,
shares, "When the character was
narrated to me, I found it
challenging. Primarily for the reason
that I'm not a mom-in-law but step
mom-in-law! The character will have
more grey shades. The glamourous
look made me inclined to play this
role." Adds Neelu Waghela of Diya Aur
Baati Hum, "It was tough for me
initially to take up the role of Bhabho
because I'm a happy-go-luck person.
Being strict with everyone is not an
easy task."And needless to say, the
meanest monster MILs grab the
highest TRPs.
