I know I promised a longer update but I am in the middle of marking and wrote this part as a self reward for having completed 3 batches of essays. Will try to post again tomorrow otherwise Wednesday.😉

I know that this part is not much Ash NI but I needed to set the stage for the heart to heart that will follow.

Rangnath had noticed that since their interaction in the OT Ashutosh and Nidhi seemed to be in a truce mode. It made him happy to see that at least they had accepted each other's presence at least at hospital. He had noted subtle changes in Ashutosh, the way how now he no longer breathed fire if something was not according plan, but to him what was more important he had seen how Ashutosh would always look for Nidhi the moment he stepped in the common room or when he went on the wards. That to him confirmed what he had always known... there was something between them, he did know what in much about what had happened back then, but now he was sure and Anji as well agreed with him it was time for these two to see reason.

It was time to move to the second part of his plan and for than he needed the contribution of his wife and of Dr Armaan Ashutosh's childhood friend. Rangnath had met him on his visit last time and he knew he could count on Armaan as both had witnessed Ashutosh had been a living corpse alive only when he was with his patients but completely aloof once he was done with work, they had tried to talk to him but with time they understood that it was fruitless and retired to the sidelines. He knew that Anji would be reluctant for what he had in mind but he knew that she agreed with him, Ashutosh and Nidhi had been playing hide and seek for too long now and that both deserved happiness. There was another obstacle that was on his mind and that was Nidhi's family, he had the feeling that Baba regretted his decision but was unable to accept it or talk about it as in a way Nidhi had unknowingly adopted the same policy as Ashutosh, alive when they had to face the world but retiring to their world of pain the moment they no longer needed to keep appearances.

"Rangnath, don't worry about Ashutosh, he is my responsibility, he will have to come to the function, just make sure that Anji succeeds with Nidhi" said Armaan. Both were on their regular call to see how they could go about bringing Ashu and Nidhi closer. It seemed that fate was going to give a helping hand. Dr Armaan heading a medical delegation to India and they had been invited to KGH by the board and in 2 days time there would be the traditional cocktail the board organised whenever they had foreign visitors. Rangnath knew that Arman would present things in such a way that Ashutosh would be obliged to make an appearance.

-" Nidhi, you have to come with me, this time you are here at least I will not get bored, Rangnath normally goes alone but this year he is insisting on my going with him" said a rather frustrated Anji. It was the third time on that day she was out to convince her best friend, but Anji knew that Nidhi was a not one to change her mind. Her only hope had been the fact that she had not said no so far.

Nidhi was in an impasse, she did not know what to do, going with Anji and Rangnath would mean social interacting which was something she avoided yet how could she deny Anji especially after Rangnath had gone out of his way to confirm that Ashutosh never attended such social gathering. Finally she decided to give in to Anji's pleadings.

Anji was relieved of her acceptance, she decided to ignore the twinge of guilt at deceiving her but like Rangnath she too could no longer see Nidhi wither away.

Nidhi was on the verge of regretting the invite when she realised what Anji had planned, she had forgotten how her friend Mrs Angelica Solanki Rangnath could be as determined as her lawyer father when she set her mind on something. So now Nidhi was on the way to the party draped in pale blue saree with golden embroidery.

Somewhere near the conference hall on the KGH premises Armaan was leading a rather subdued Ashutosh in, already his coming to the gathering was causing the grapevine to go haywire as Dr Terror never graced the function where people did something else than work.

Ashutosh had been standing on the sidelines watching the people around wondering when it would be politically correct to move out when he heard Armaan in his usual tone calling someone:

" Rangnath good to see you, Anji you are doing well, and who do we have here, the elusive Dr Varma"

Ashutosh was rooted on the spot for a minute he wandered if it was really her, she was there in front of him , dressed in a saree just like that time when she had visited him. He did not know what to do now, he knew that in the hospital they had a rather at ease relationship and he also acknowledged that the medial setting allowed them to keep that easy relationship but now what to do, what to say to her.
