Within minutes they could hear the siren of the approaching ambulance, Ashutosh could clearly see that was tense but he felt helpless other than doing his best to save baba there was not much he could do right now, though it hurt him that he could not comfort him at this point but keeping inmind that they were in their professional world he was not his Ashutosh nor was she her Nidhi. As he turned to her he realised that he would not get help from her as she was too emotionally involved, he gently moved her on the side and went ahead taking charge of Baba's transfer from ambulance to ER trauma centre.
Nidhi was grateful to Ashutosh for taking over seeing baba on the stretcher had shattered her composure, her ever strong and reliable Baba was now lying helpless and worse of all she felt useless.Seeing Dadi bua quiet was what got her back in action she had to be strong for her family. She went to them trying to be as reassuring as she could. After taking everyone to the relative's room she went to the unit to know the latest. From afar she could see Ashutosh talking to the heart surgeon and deep down she knew that it did not augur well, quelling her fears she moved ahead to know more.
Ashutosh felt her presence and turned around, " Dr Varma your father's condition is stable for the time being, it was a mild attack but we will keep him here for a few days and more tests will be carried out". With these words he moved away to try and get back to his activities as spending extra time here would have arouse suspicion. Once again grudgingly he had to revert to the role of the senior doctor. Nidhi was disappointed but she knew that was the right approach, their relationship was too new to be shared with the world and right now baba was her priority.
After gathering the information she went to the family and updated them, after much effort she managed to send everyone from Anji to Dadi home convincing them that she would be with baba. She went back to the Icu where she finally allowed herself the let the tears fall, oddly enough that was when she realised that their roles had been reversed, baba was the one who had always looked after her every need and now it was her turn to care for him. After having check his stats for the umpteenth time she held his hand tightly as she used to in her childhood, as if finding some solace in the gesture she dozed off.
That was how he found her as he came by later to check on baba and did not surprise him to find her there but what hurt was the traces of tears on her cheeks and the fact that he could not have been here to wipe them off.
