I think in the first half of the show, Ishwari was meant to be an example of how a mother should not be. And Asha an example of how a mother should be.
I don't know if the makers really planned it that way, but I felt Bose family was presented as the ideal family whereas Dixit family was meant to be a dysfunctional one. And the mothers from both the houses were meant to be so opposite of each other to establish that stark contrast. Even Dadi's support towards Asha was highlighted only to point out how atrocious a mother in law Ishwari was.
I think the first part of Season 1, especially the first 150 episodes were done very well.. the contrast between the families was shown beautifully. The Bose family, open and non judgemental, loving in a fun and easy way, a family that could take a joke. The Dixit family loving but took each other and the rest of the world very seriously. This was understandable due to their severe circumstances, where the young boy had to grow up suddenly and be the partner for a widowed mother with 4 kids and no proper job or education.
I think as much Ishwari was manipulative and weird, I loved the way she was characterized and one could sympathize with her emotions, understand her over-attachment to her son, her insecurity was shown excellently, where she herself didn't understand why she was feeling so low and depressed. Ishwari's layers and complexities made her stand out so nicely in those episodes.
