Dev stood in the gynecologist's cabin to collect Sonakshi's reports. The sense of dread was overwhelming him. He knew what the results were, yet hope held him on the spot to take a chance for Sonakshi and Maa's happiness.
Dev still didn't have the guts to break Sonakshi's hopes telling her about the reports concerning her inhospitable uterus. And here for the hope of Sonakshi he has come to collect her pregnancy reports. He knew the answer would be negative. But he decided to take the harsh reality on himself rather than Sona getting to know first.
"Please have a seat Mr. Dixit, your wife's reports are here." The gynecologist asked Dev.
Dev impatiently sat on the seat. He didn't want the moment of the bursting of his bubble to be prolonged anymore. What is the need to sit and listen to it? He was strong enough to endure whatever comes his way.
The doctor pulled the file named Mrs. Sonakshi Devrath Dixit from the small pile and opened the report.
"What's written in the report, Doctor?" Dev wanted to know quickly. This kind of thrill was unbearable to him.
"Congratulations Mr. Dixit, Mrs. Dixit is expecting!"
Dev sat there motionless, the words he was expecting contradicted with what his brain registered. Did he hear it wrong?
"I'm sorry... Did you say Congratulations? Expecting?" Dev wanted to correct himself if he ever imagined...
"Of course, Mr. Dixit, you heard it right." The doctor confirmed.
Dev still looked blank. He didn't want to rejoice so quickly. He doesn't get so lucky this easily.
"Are... Are you sure doctor? I mean, if the reports were exchanged or something?" he confirmed.
"I am absolutely sure Mr. Dixit. I can never risk the blunders of getting the reports of the chief trustee's family, exchanged. Are you not ready for the baby?" the doctor asked.
Dev looked affronted at the doctor's question, but he clarified - "Of course I would be more than welcoming my child, doctor. But this wasn't expected. Actually a few months ago, Sonakshi was diagnosed of inhospitable uterus. And the chances of her getting pregnant were just 7%." Dev explained.
"Mr. Dixit, A chance of even 1% is a hope in medical science. We as doctors don't give up on a patient until it gets hopeless. Until there's a chance, there is hope. And where better than the medical field can vouch for miracles?"
"So, do you mean everything is all right with Sonakshi? She can go through this pregnancy, normally?" Dev wanted to assure himself.
"That still has to be checked Mr. Dixit. Your wife needs to undergo examination for that. How is her uterus doing, if she will be able to carry for the remaining months; all can be answered only once she has been examined. She is four weeks along, and is still pregnant, it is good. Take very good care of her for another two weeks and then we can go for an ultrasound to examine the actual state of the foetus, the complications, etc. I can tell this is not going to be an easy pregnancy, but yes, if taken the right medical help and proper care, she may get along the remaining months. For now, Yes! She is pregnant."
Thanking the doctor, Dev left the cabin. Happiness never came free of cost for him. With budding hope, bubbling joy, came clutching fear as well. He fervently wished that Sona can go through this testing period of the remaining nine months to fulfill the little dream she has started knitting.
He sat in his car, but didn't turn the engine on. The scenes from flashbacks reverberated his ears as the roll of memories played before his eyes. The reports of the inhospitable uterus, and the chances of Sonakshi getting pregnant being low, his tensed demeanor during his sangeet thinking of the inevitable, their unknown plans for their tiny babies, the happiness on both the family's faces, yesterday, expecting Sonakshi's pregnancy and his Complete silence ever since he had come to know what they were thinking. But this is unbelievable. He is living their dream that he had eventually lost hope on. How did the God become so merciful on him this time?
Mere dil mein jagah Khuda ki khaali thi
Dekha wahan pe aaj tera chehra hai
Main bhatakta huaa sa ek baadal hoon
Jo tere aasmaan pe aake thehra hai
Dev again stood before the idol of Lord Shiva at his home temple today. Tears again spilling out of his eyes, they were happy tears. His hand joined in gratitude, head bowed in faith.
After getting to know of Sonakshi's pregnancy two months ago, Dev had come here again to have the first cordial conversation with this new-found well-wisher that the God had become. But just like the distrust he had, he had also warned him to help Sonakshi continue with her pregnancy and not shatter her dreams by increasing any further complications for her. And like counting his breath he has been counting each single day worrying for Sonakshi and his mother, if the baby is still fine and Sonakshi is doing well... Fortunately things were sailing through the storm and Dev heaved an easy sigh each day when he found Sona and Maa so happy. By no chance of a cruel turn of fate did he want things to turn bad for them. And so, he came here each night to have a deal with this deity.
Today, Sonakshi had successfully completed her first trimester, and under strict vigilance by the family and ultimate care by him, Sonakshi had today got another ultrasound done. Dev had gone with Sonakshi into the ultrasound room, and felt a certain jolt of happiness seeing the presence of his off spring in his love's womb. Usually it is the mothers who feel the overwhelming feeling of a life growing in her, but Dev could challengingly compete with Sonakshi where this overwhelming feeling of happiness and gratitude he felt, because he knew what costed this moment of happiness. He knew how like each counting heartbeat he spends each day wishing for Sonakshi's, his mother's and of course this tiny baby's happiness. He knew he is almost saving everyone from the lion's mouth. He knew how hard this miracle was. He knew the actual value of this happiness.
While Sonakshi was brought back by the nurse, the doctor had quickly updated Dev for his personal satisfaction that things were much better with Sonakshi. Her uterus is becoming strong, and the baby is absolutely, fine. Since the first trimester finished without any major events, the likelihood of the uterus being hostile to the fetus has gone considerably down, and the course of Sonakshi's complete bedrest could be alternated with mild walking occasionally.
And here Dev, like every night after all retired to their rooms would walk down here to this temple in the hall. And today he felt gratitude for the first time to the God who had been snatching his happiness for the past 29 years. But these months is miraculously being kind to him. Had he not felt so helpless for Sonakshi, he wouldn't have ever thought to have regarded this to the God's miracle; but certain times, it gets such a way that you believe in miracles and the power of the unseen almighty. He sat down on the carpet in the temple area and joined his hands, tears flowing happily, his head bowed, he was thanking HIM for the mercies.
After having a thorough struggle with his clogged throat, he spoke finally- "Tujhe main maanta nahi tha. Bhagwaan hote hain ki nahi, mujhe nahi pata tha. Jo bhi tha, wo maa mein hi tha. Par maa bhi insaan hain. Sonakshi ki haalat toh wo bhi nahi sudhaar sakti thi... Par tuney wo kar diya, jo mere bas mein bhi nahi tha... Sonakshi ki godh mein wo saari khushiyaan daal di jinke wo sapne bunti thi. Tu patthar mein hai ki nahi, main nahi jaanta; par mere dil ke uss khaali jagah mein tu bas gaya hai jahan kisi andekhi Shakti ke liye vishwaas ki jagah khaali thi... Tuney wo bhar di bhagwaan... Thank you... Thank you Sonakshi aur maa ko itna khush rakhne ke liye... Mere bachhe ko abhi tak bilkul theek rakhne ke liye... Thank you... Meri baat maanne ke liye. Mera vishwaas phir se na todne ke liye... Isi tarah Sonakshi par daya baanye rakhna... Usko aur baby ko kuch mat hone dena... Please!"
Tu rooh hai toh main kaaya banu
Taa-umr main tera saaya banu
Keh de toh ban jaaun bairaag main
Kehde toh main teri maaya banu
Tu saaz hai, main ragini
Tu raat hai, main chandni
Another night Sonakshi stood in front of the mirror to see if her belly showed the bump these days or not? This illusion to find herself growing around the belly was her favourite pass time. She would gather her kurta or gown whatever she is wearing; slightly tight to see if the belly showed the swelling. And to her, her little waist looked growing every time she looked in the mirror, while Ishwari would laugh at her eagerness. This sheer happiness at stepping into motherhood was so instilled in her, that her joy knew no bounds.
Her entering the second trimester now resulted in her gaining weight as well mass around her belly, and she felt ecstatic looking at herself in the mirror. She grinned to herself thinking of the multiple times she had stuffed cushion under her dress in the past to see how she would look eventually one day when she would be pregnant. Now her little girly games were the reality of her life.
She caressed her little growing tummy, and got into the bed before Dev entered the room. If he found her roaming around again, he would scold her for being so reckless, and this is one thing she cannot stand these days. Sonakshi understood the little complications like a weak uterus she had, that the doctor and Dev told her, but was unaware about the inhospitable condition. But little per say complication, she understood Dev's concern, and didn't want to be scolded. She lay down in the bed, and started caressing her tummy, talking to her little tiny baby, who's little presence she felt now.
"You know, I have always been so concerned about my figure and health and diet, that anyone would think that I will be so concerned about my body growing to accommodate you... But you know what little one? Take up as much space as you need, your maa is too happy about it. Just be safe inside, stay healthy, and stay put. Koi jaldi nahi hai aane ki... Your maa and papa want you to be hale and hearty little one... And we love you right from the time you never existed. Whenever you come, you would be welcome with open arms... Not just your maa and papa are awaiting, but so many more people who want to spoil you rotten. But you be a good baby, okay?"
Sonakshi now lied down quietly, she could hear Dev's footsteps nearing. And before he could even enter did Sonakshi jovially asked- "Mere sandwiches banake laaye hain?" ... Dev grinned at her. She loved eating something cooked by him at night when no one was up. She loved the fact that he played her partner in crime at having mid night eating that no one else knew about. And the lovely husband he is, no matter how tired he is, he never took her wishes for granted, and fulfilled her each stupid if any, all demands she would lay. She had seen a wonderful change not only in her mother in law's behavior post her news of pregnancy, but also a huge beautiful change in Dev; he took such care that she never knew he could do... But he did, and he loved her more and more each day. And she felt falling in love with him over and over each day.
Binging over the sandwiches her husband made, she smacked his cheek in a wet kiss. For being such a heart throb. She settled in the bed next to Dev, and like the new position of sleeping that they have adopted for some time now, Sonakshi sifted to rest her head-on Dev's arm, and his other hand protectively around her waist, as if he has taken all on himself to protect their little lifeline while she sleeps. He returned a love filled kiss on Sonakshi's head, while he cuddled her to sleep, his arm caressing her tensed back to help her doze off.
Mere dil mein jagah Khuda ki khali thi
Dekha wahan pe aaj tera chehra hai
Main bhatakta huaa sa ek baadal hoon
Jo tere aasmaan pe aake thehra hai
Dev woke up yet again like every night it happened these days to the active kicks of his little baby into Sonakshi's tummy. She would get very restless in sleep whenever the baby decided to wake the would be mother off, and her restlessness would wake the would be father off, who tacitly took the job of pacifying the little Obhodro inside. So, that his Mrs. Khargosh can go back to sleep.
Dev kept his big firm palm on now Sonakshi's fully grown tummy, slowly settling their little baby inside. He would hum some random lullaby that he faintly remembered the tune of when his mother used to sing for him and his younger siblings when they were little. Thankfully it settled after a few minutes... He kept his cheek on Sonakshi's gown, under which the big baby bump was. He felt so good about it. He could faintly feel the baby settling in... He continued caressing his cheek on the tummy, little happy tears leaked his yearning eyes. If he had been dreaming all these months, his heart would have died in dread. But every time he felt Sonakshi's tummy, and a throbbing life inside, it would give him proofs that this was the reality. He would silently talk to the baby, not able to thank him enough to restore happiness in this house, to restore his faith in God, to let him know each day, that he was wrong the previous day thinking that he can't love Sonakshi to any higher levels, but he felt wrong, and his heart would bubble with love all the more, to see his and her families so beautifully mingled with each other... All because of the presence of that one tiny creature that was almost fully grown into his wife's womb, ready to mark its physical presence in this house in a few more weeks. He felt so thankful to everyone, especially this child to have put everything right... Dev wiped his silent happy tears when he felt Sonakshi's fingers coming into his hair, with her eyes still closed. Not only was he and the baby awake, the mother too was awake, but was lying down quietly to let the father-child have their daily time at the wee hours... She guided him back to the pillow, where she kept her head on his shoulder again, while she slept flat on her back taking as much space as she needed in the bed.
Hum pe sitaaron ka ehsaan ho
Poora, adhoora har armaan ho
Ek dusre se jo baandhe humein
Baahon mein nanhi si ik jaan ho
Aabaad ho chota sa ghar
Lag na sake kisi ke nazar
Dev finally heaved out a relieved breath, his and Sonakshi's families had tumbled out of the hospital room once Sonakshi needed to feed their son Devaansh, tiny Mr. Obhodro has finally come. Sonakshi had later after coming from labour told Dev, that all shall happen per her wish only. She wanted a tiny obhodro, and that only came. Now he will have to wait for some many years for tiny little sona. And he had just smiled off, not disclosing the details with her yet now. She was happy, and that is all he wants for her.
Right now, he walked to her bed where she looked carefully at the little piece of her life suckling on to her for his little meal. Though the baby changed looks multiple times, but she still was sure that he has taken a lot of looks from his father. No arguments on that, Dev won hands down here, and Ishwari couldn't control her happiness each time she looked at her grandson, and telling each and every single person that her Dev also used to look exactly like this when he was born.
Dev came and slightly pressed his finger tip on Ansh's nose. Feeling distracted the little one gave a wavering glance at his father, and with a little sound of disapproval began suckling again. Dev felt immense joy at doing this, atleast his son responded him so strongly. He did this again, and the boy gave a bigger grunt this time, and his little lips drooping into a frown that would soon result into a full-fledged howl. Sonakshi pat on Dev's hand to leave her son alone, at least when he is taking his feed. Cajoling the little one back, both the mother and son were in their world.
Sonakshi looked back at her husband. Now he was frowning sitting on a chair next to her bed. "Bas maa beta ek dusre se pyaar karte hain... Bechaare papa ko toh koi dekhta bhi nahi hai... Pehle baby ki mummy ke paas bohot saara pyaar tha, ab toh baby aa gaya hai, baby ke papa ki kisi ko zarurat nahi hai..." Dev complained cutely.
"Aww... Dev! Aap jaante hain na, that's not true. Mujhe aapki bohot zarurat hai... Aap nahin honge toh baby ko burp kaun karaayega, uski nappy kaun change karega. Papa nahi karenge toh mummy kya kya karengi? Hmmm? Ye leejiye, aap burp kara deejiye... I will rest till then." Sonakshi carefully placed Devaansh in his father's eager arms, who took into doing these little little things with such glee and happiness like he would be awarded a noble prize for such a noble work. Never mind, she lay down carefully in the bed... While Dev walked about the hospital room, patting the baby's back, resting him carefully on his shoulder.
"Dev... Main kya soch rahi thi..." Sonakshi began, but noticed, both the father and son were busy in their world now, they took no notice of the poor mother... But Sonakshi gave a huge smile to herself... Dev felt so deprived of the baby's attention, the entire family was hovering around her and Ansh that he got almost few seconds only to hold his baby till now. And now he wanted to give his undivided attention to his child until the demanding families again took his share with the baby. She was more and more in love with all of this... This little baby has changed everything so positively, that she could help thank her lucky stars for all of this.
Mere dil mein jagah Khuda ki khaali thi
Dekha wahan pe aaj tera chehra hai
Main bhatakta huaa sa ek badal hoon
Jo tere aasmaan pe aake thehra hai
Sonakshi wondered where Dev was. All day he kept hovering around her and Devaansh when the families kept crowding them, and now when all have retired, he has all the time with her and the baby, she couldn't see him anywhere. She had returned from the hospital, and was settling back into the Ishwari Mansion. She had never expected things to go so smooth with her pregnancy and now the baby. Like everyone was more than ready to help her raise the baby.
Sonakshi patted Ansh's back burping him, while she walked around the corridor out of their room, to see if Dev is with Maa. But, Maa's room's lights were off, she was off to sleep... In her search to find him, she spotted him sitting near the temple, again doing his monologue. As much as it was pleasantly surprising for her and Ishwari to see Dev getting along with God, they had never expected him to be so much into it. She went inside the room, and placed the now sleeping baby on the bed, and ensuring pillows around him, she quietly went downstairs to the temple in the hall...
Sonakshi tiptoed to Dev, he was sniffling... "Is he crying?" Sonakshi wondered... She could hear him thanking for solving all the problems... To be giving Sonakshi all the happiness... To keeping her safe and sound... To not disappoint her... Sonakshi came and sat next to him, and for the first time in months did his actual dam of emotions ran out of control, he had hugged her to himself, and cried his heart out. Alone he knew how hard were those months of anticipation. The times of dread and what not...
Sonakshi slowly cajoled him out of his miseries, and asked him to speak all that is bothering him... And for the first time in the one year of their marriage did he reveal about the inhospitable uterus report, his self-struggle, and everything. As much as she felt sad about him dealing with everything alone, she felt happiness and gratitude for such a loving soul mate, who could go to the bounds of his ego and self respect breaking to a nil point only for her happiness and dreams to win. And before she helped him get back to the room were- "I am happy Dev, that it was me and the baby to be the reasons for your restored faith. As much as we wouldn't believe, miracles happen, and it happened. I can't thank God for giving me you as a soulmate in the first place. I feel fulfilled, complete. I love you Dev!"
"And I love you more than you would ever come to know Sonakshi." Dev had got up from the carpet in the temple, and helped Sonakshi up on her feet. They went hand in hand back to their paradise, where the hard strived dream of their life, the fruit of their love, slept peacefully, unaware of how difficult times his parents have crossed to have him here.
