Part 10

Sonakshi's heart continued to beat wildly.

She didn't know what to do at this point. Moving away was the right thing to do. But she wanted to stay like that. It felt nice. She looked into Dev's chocolate brown eyes and let herself get lost in them. Controlling her emotions was too much of a hassle. But her mind still screamed at her. "Yeh galat hai. Unki shaadi hone waali hai" she thought. So, she decided that it was high time that she sat back up, but just as she started to move away, Dev's hand shot up to move a strand of hair falling over her eyes and froze her back into that same position. Her eyes grew wider.

But Dev didn't stop there. He brought his fingers to her right cheek and slowly caressed it. Dev was mesmerised by her beauty. Those eyes, that cute nose, the perfectly shaped lips, he could go crazy just looking at her. And now that he knew how soft her cheeks were, he wondered how soft her lips would be. He had suddenly developed this strange urge to press his lips against hers and find out if he was right. As Sonakshi looked up at Dev with those helpless and innocent doe eyes his patience snapped and he started moving forward. He was so close now that one move and his lips would be on hers.

Sonakshi's heart flew out of her control. When she realised what Dev was about to do, she wanted to run away. But she wanted to experience it too. His hand was still on her cheek. She didn't know what made her do it, but with that tiny distance between both their faces she brought her hand to his face and lightly traced his lips with the tip of her finger. This was a feeling she had never experienced before and she absolutely loved it. Just as they both kind of gave up their struggle and decided to close the remaining distance, the door to the garden snapped open with a loud sound and Keechu Bhaiyya stepped into the garden with a tray containing two glasses of juice, breaking the spell that had kept Dev and Sonakshi locked under its influence. "Bhaiyya, Doctor Didi, yeh aapke liye" Keechu Bhaiyya said placing the tray on the table, oblivious to Dev and Sonakshi's predicament. Sonakshi had sprung back upright like a spring and had turned an even darker shade of red than before and kept her eyes on the glasses of juice as Keechu Bhaiyya left. Dev on the other hand couldn't believe what he was about to do. He needed to get himself back together. So, he jumped up from his seat, said a hurried "Excuse me for a minute" to Sonakshi and almost ran out of the garden into the house.

With Dev's departure Sonakshi hid her face in her hands. Her cheeks felt hot and her heart had still not calmed down. "Ki korcheesh Sona? (what are you doing Sona). Tumhey pichhey hat jana chahiye tha naah" she scolded herself. "Par main toh move karna hi chahti thi, Dev ne rok liya" she continued her conversation with herself. "Kya Dev mujhey sachmey kiss karney waaley the" she thought, without being able to believe what had happened between them. And she was even more shocked to realise that if Keechu Bhaiyya hadn't intervened, Dev would have completed what he started! "Chup Kar Sona! Tum bhi toh nahin haati thi. Tum bhi chahti thi that Dev jo karney waaley the woh karein!" she concluded as she buried her face even deeper into her hands! "Ab main kaise face karungi unhey? You are so stupid Sona!" she cried in an embarrassed tone. But embarrassment wasn't the only emotion in her heart. There was excitement there too and most of all, there was this tiny spark of Hope.

On the other hand, Dev was sure he was going mad. He was pacing in front of the dining table and trying to calm himself. "Yeh kya karney waala tha main?" He massaged his forehead. "Main ussey kiss karney wala tha! Sonakshi ko! Garden meye!" He couldn't believe himself. Till date Dev had never done anything like this. Infact, upto a point he was sure that he didn't need a partner in his life. But then he had met Natasha and one thing had let to another and now she was his fianc. Wait a minute! "Meri fianc hai! Yeh kya karney jaa raha tha main!" he could've slapped himself. But it wasn't because he was technically about to "cheat" on his fianc. No no no. He wasn't bothered about that at all because Natasha and his engagement wasn't a normal one. But that was not the point. The point was that he was going to hurt Sonakshi by what he was almost about to do. She was a very good person. A person full of self-respect and someone who went by her own principles. And she knew he had a fianc. If he had completed the act, his own image in her eyes would have fallen. "Woh kya soch rahi hogi mere barein mey?" he suddenly thought. Up until the previous month Dev could not even fathom to think about what someone else thought of him. He never cared. But now, sitting here, in this situation, he badly wanted to know what Sonakshi thought about him. He would have to get himself back together and go back. This was extremely unprofessional of him. But she did things to him that no one else had ever done. He hoped he wouldn't mess up again and so gathered his wits and walked back to the garden.

As he stepped out, he noticed Sonakshi reading the work papers he had made and decided that concentrating on work was the way out of this awkward situation. Avoiding their previous "moment" seemed like the best option now. And unknown to Dev, Sonakshi thought the same. It is for that very reason that she had taken up the papers and started reading them with utmost concentration. This was the only thing that would keep her mind off Dev and his actions. Dev sat down on the chair and cleared his throat as Sonakshi looked up at him. "Woh, main aapsey inhi papers ke barein me baat karna chahta tha Dr. Bose. Humari Mumbai ke company headquarters me bhi kaafi saarey employees hai jinkey health ka dhyaan rakhna zaroori hai. Hala ki I hired you for our Delhi headquarters, main chahta hoon ki kal jab mein Mumbai headquarters jaon, ek meeting our surprise visit pe, aap unn employess se baat karein, aur unkey health issues ko thoda dekh le" Dev said in almost one breath. He refused to make any eye contact with her and wanted to finish the meeting before he lost control once again. Sonakshi also didn't meet Dev's eyes and therefore didn't know that he wasn't looking at her. Her eyes were on the paper while Dev was talking. But she was paying full attention because when Dev was around, her attention would automatically be on him. It was involuntary.

"Aap chahtey hai ki main aapkey saath Mumbai aoon?" Sonakshi asked apprehensively. She would have to travel to Mumbai. With Dev. Good Lord. How on earth would she survive? "Haan Dr. Bose. Aapko mere saath chalna hai Mumbai. Kal subah 10 bajey ki flight hai. Matlab.. not just me. Riya bhi hongi wahan. And unfortunately, Dr. Bose, humein aapney saath Mr. Kushal Roy ko bhi lekar jaana padega. He handles the Mumbai accounts." Dev said observing Sonakshi carefully once again. He knew she hated being in close proximity with Kushal, but he needed to do this. He had no choice. Plus, he would always be around to protect Sonakshi. So, he was sure that nothing would happen. And somewhere in his heart he also hoped that this situation would help Sonakshi trust him better and tell him about her problems with that scumbag and he could take some action against that man for good.

The moment Sonakshi heard Kushal's name she became stiff. That had become a reflex action after all these years. But strangely, she didn't feel scared. Yes she did feel uneasy, but scared, no. There was a reason for that. It was simple and her mind gave her the answer. "Dev hongey wahan. Mujhey kuch nahin hoga" and this thought surprised her even more. But she tried not to express her surprise. Keeping her voice even she said. "Theek hai De- I mean Mr. Dixit, I'll be ready" she said quickly correcting her slip up. Trust her to make such horrible slip ups at the worst of times. She was sure Dev hadn't noticed. But she didn't know how closely Dev watched her all the time. He had noticed all right. "Sonakshi mujhey Dev bulaney waali thi" he thought overjoyed. He could have actually broken into a dance if he wasn't always so serious. But he knew it was important to keep his emotions under check.

So, pretending to have not noticed it he said "Theek hai Dr. Bose. Yeh papers le jaiye aap. Padh lena inhey achhey se. I'll be there to pick you up at 9 sharp" he said while Sonakshi stared at him wide eyed. Realising his mistake he quickly said "I mean Riya and I will be there at 9 sharp." Sonakshi sighed in relief and collected the papers quickly. In a hurry, one paper almost slipped off the table. Sonakshi reached for it, while at the same time Dev did and his hand landed on top of hers above the paper. Sonakshi's eyes snapped up to meet his while his eyes were already on hers. Keeping his eyes on her, he traced a circle with his finger on the backside of her palm and then slowly removed it from over hers. If she continued to look at him like that any longer he knew he would be forced to complete the task he had commenced earlier. So, to protect Sonakshi and himself to some extent he looked away and walked to the door. Moving his hand in a swaying motion he said to Sonakshi "After you."

Sonakshi's legs swayed as she gather herself together and walked through the door into the house. Ishwari was sitting on the couch. Seeing Sonakshi she called out "Beta aap jaa rahi hai?" Sonakshi cleared her throat and said, "Haan aunty. Aaj chalti hoon. Phir aungi. Aap sab se milkar bohot achha laga" and then she bent down to touch her feet. Ishwari was delighted But she didn't let Sonakshi touch her feet. She stopped her in the middle and gave her a hug instead. "Zaroor ana. Aur khaney pe aana, zyada time leke. Nahin toh Dev ka buss chalein toh woh tumhey aapney paas hi rakh le, humsey toh baat hi na karney deye" she said smirking at both of them. At this sentence Sonakshi looked down with her cheeks blazing while Dev protested "Ma! Kya bol rahi hai!"

"Arey! Matlab kaam me uljhakey rakhey. Theek hi toh kahan maine" she said enjoying their discomfort, specially Dev's. She had never seen him in this state and she was glad that he had found someone who could make him feel this way. "Achha jao beta. Phir milengey" she said relieving Dev and Sonakshi of this stress. Sonakshi smiled at her and almost ran towards the door as Ishwari laughed, while Dev followed Sonakshi out, glaring at his mother, but Ishwari just could not stop laughing.

Dev stood back as Sonakshi got into his car while the driver started it. Sonakshi did not dare to look up at Dev. Just as the car rolled out of his garage Dev yelled out "9 bajey Dr. Bose, don't be late!" and Sonakshi looked up to see him smiling mischievously as his eyes twinkled. She was positive that after the impending trip, Dev would most definitely be responsible for the cardiac arrest that Sonakshi would incur being around him for two days continuously.

As Sonakshi reached home, still in a daze she opened the door to her house only to be bombarded by a loud scream of "Surprise" from everyone. She was confused at first "Aaj toh mera birthday nahin hai, aap sab chilla kyun rahey hai?" she asked her family. But on focusing properly, she noticed there was one extra person in the room. Ritwik! "Oh my God! Ritwik!" she yelled and jumped in for a hug. "Tum wapas kab ayein?" she asked him happily. She was overjoyed to see her best friend and neighbour back from his year-long office tour. She had missed him. His advices and reassurances. He was like her big brother, always having the right things to say. "Aaj dopahar ko hi wapas aya. Tumhey itna miss kar raha tha ki aur durr raha hi nahin gaya" he joked and everyone laughed. Asha patted Ritwik's head and said "Kitne dubley hog aye ho tum beta. Theek se khana nahin khatey the naah. Aab toh ek mahina yahin khana padega tumhey" she said laughing. Ritwik looked the elated by this news "Haan haan Aunty. Jitna khilana hai aapko khila do! I'm ready!" Sonakshi was extremely excited now that he was here. She had to tell him about Dev. He was the only person she trusted along with Elena. But Elena was busy these days and she hadn't gotten the time to tell her everything. Yes she knew about Dev, but Elena didn't know that Sonakshi's feeling were growing, even though she teased Sona relentlessly whenever she got the time too!

Sonakshi dragged Ritwik to her room and started their chat sessions. They discussed about what Ritwik did in Australia during his work trip and if he had found someone there. At this question Sonakshi was hit by a pillow and that made her giggle. But then she told him about Dev. Everything about him. Right from the beginning when she had seen him in the car. She also told him about meeting Kushal again. After hearing the whole story Ritwik looked at Sonakshi seriously. "Toh tum Mr. Dixit ko pasand karney lagi ho, hai naah?" Sona nodded, ashamed. "Aisa muh mat banao. Hum kisko pasand kartein hai, yeh humarey control me kahan hota hai" he smiled looking at her sadly. He knew that she was in a difficult position. He hated seeing her like this. She was like a sister he never had. "Tumhey pakka lagta hai naah ki tum iss tour pe jaa paogi? Kushal aur Dev, dono se sambhal ke rehna padega tumhey, even though dono ke reasons bohot alag hai" he asked her with a concerned expression.

"Haan Ritwik. I will go. Mujhey Kushal se darr ke rehna achha nahin lagta. I have to overcome that. And this is a very good way to do that. Aur jahan tak Dev ka sawaal hai, Riya, unki behen bhi chal rahi hai humarey saath. She works in the company too. I'll be with her most of the time. Toh zyada time Dev ke saath spend nahin karna padega" she said convincing Ritwik and herself. Ritwik knew Sonakshi was strong and sensible. So he agreed. Deciding to keep her mind off the upcoming situation they chatted and had a lovely dinner with Sona's family. Everyone helped Sona pack and after a blissful sleep, Sonakshi was ready for the trip.

As Sonakshi dragged her suitcase through the living room towards the door, with her entire family and Ritwik fussing over her she saw that she still had ten minutes left before Dev arrived. Stationing her bag near the door she turned around. Hugging each and every one starting from Daadi and stopping at Elena, she said "Buss Do din ki hi toh baat hai. Aap log chinta mat karo. Main theek se rahungi" she reassured them. As Bijoy opened his mouth Sonakshi interrupted her father saying "Haan Baba. Main pohunchkey hi call karungi. Mone achhey! (I remember!)" she completed laughing. Ritwik silently asked her through his eyes if she was ready. And she said yes, because she was. She would handle herself. This was a big step for her work. An opportunity to make a name outside her own city was an important thing. And the rest of the problems could be handled. She knew it would be fine. So just as she ended her thought a loud honk was heard and Sonakshi knew it was time to leave. Taking a deep breath, she waved a goodbye and dragged her suitcase out the door with Ritwik behind her as the rest of the family proceeded to the balcony to watch her go. As she stepped out onto the road she was faced with Dev's white Mercedes. Riya sat at the back with her window rolled down and waved happily as soon as she spotted Sonakshi, which Sonakshi returned. Kushal sat in front looking at Sonakshi, but she tried to ignore him and she was happy to realise that she could do so.

But there was someone she couldn't ignore. And that person stood leaning against the car looking impeccably handsome. In blue jeans paired with a plain white T-shirt teamed with a grey blazer, it was impossible for Sonakshi to keep her eyes off Dev. As she slowly approached the car, Dev smiled that same charming but small smile and took off his shades to reveal those chocolate brown eyes. As Sonakshi went on and stood before him he said "Ready Dr. Bose?"

And Sonakshi really doubted if she was. She would find out anyway, right?
