It makes no sense for him or Sona to convince her because they know she will say yes but hide away suppressed anxiety, potentially leading to another sleeping pill episode of some sort. So, from their point of view, I don't think they believe Ishwari should be convinced at all. If Ishwari has to grow up, she has to do it herself.

And as for Dev's character, I think he is consistent with what the promos before the show had conveyed to me. He worships his mother, and his decision to part ways with Sona comes from that level of devotion where he doesn't even stop to think before pushing away anything that disturbs his mother. The catch here is that this time, he's pushing away a part of himself that Sona had awakened by entering his life. He's essentially fragmenting his own self, and that will cost him much more than he realises even now, with all his sadness.

I totally agree with @saumiee about the phases too - it's a gradual, organic progression. He's acted on impulse, but the consequences go much deeper than he understands yet. The sight of Sonakshi with someone else might jolt that realisation into him. After all, letting go of Sona and watching her carry on her life alone from a distance is not nearly as complicated as watching her potentially move on with someone else. I don't think Dev has even considered that possibility yet, which is probably why it will hit him so hard - because for all practical intents and purposes, it is inevitable that Sona's family will want someone in her life.

It is basically overwhelming, how much scope this story has. Touchwood. Let's see how the writers tap it from here. 😃
