Chapter 22:

Becoming a bread winner of family at really young age changes your whole attitude towards the life. Balancing Neha's engagement preparation and Pending office works is no child's play and yet Dev managed to somehow complete each and every task efficiently. Finally when he got some time to spare Ishwari asked him to relax a little.

"Riya...Dev wants some coffee...uske room jaa kar de aao" Ishwari asked her younger daughter.

"Maa..I am really busy...please aap Nikki ko bolo naa"

"Auntyji main lekar jaati hu" Sona interrupted. It had been three days since she saw Dev. He left for his office early morning and returned late night. She wanted to see him..to talk to him.

Dev was fast asleep in his room. She smiled. He looked exhausted. Deciding against waking him up she turned to leave quietly but his mobile rang at that precise moment startling her and waking him up.

"Sona...stop!" He called out while attending his call and she waited.

"Hi" he said...after hanging up.

"Hey"

"My coffee?"He asked.

She handed him the mug quietly.

"What are you plans for today?"

"Will go out with Neha..she had some work..Why?"Sona answered.

"Nothing...just wanted to take you out for dinner"He was blunt.

"Haan?"

"Dinner...as in the last meal of the day", he explained further.

"I know what dinner means Dev...but kyun?",she was confused.

"Tumse bahut saari baatein karni hai..and somehow we are always interrupted" He sighed.

"Not possible today"..she said after thinking a little.

"Well...tomorrow is Neha's engagement" She added.

"Ya...Monday chale?" He asked. She nodded.

"It's a date then", He said with a failed attempt to hide his excitement from the voice.

"See...your three days holidays are over today...after this weekend join the office. I need you. Work has piled up like anything.." He went on while she just nodded.

"I never asked for the leaves"Sona interrupted now.

"Well you needed it badly", He dismissed.

"Hmm...what else do you think I need"

"Me", he said..without batting his eyelid.

Sona laughed out loud.

"Few things never change" She said referring to his confidence...rather over confidence.

"And thank god for that" He smiled..referring to her infectious laughter.

"Dev...it would have been really tough na..I mean last few years"This was in her mind since the day they met.

Dev suddenly became serious.

"I just remembered one thing through all those difficult times" He spoke finally.

"And what was that?"Sona was curious.

"This too shall pass"

"Sonakshi...today is an important day for me"

"Kya baat hai?"She asked.

"My results are going to be out. If I clear the cut off I will be eligible for the scholarship for my further education. Damn!!! I am scared now. What if I don't make it"

"Tum negative baatein kyu sochte ho Dev? Sab theek hoga dekhna"Sona held his hand.

But worry was still evident in his face. He was restless throughout. Later when the result was announced his worst fear did come true. He missed the cut off by few marks.

"Auntyji..where is Dev" Sona asked Ishwari. Dev was not reachable since past few days and Sonakshi knew it was time for her to intervene.

"Beta he has locked himself in his room since past few days...his dad is so tensed"Ishwari was worried to death.

"I will talk to him"She headed towards his room.

Finally after many request Dev opened the door for Sonakshi.

"Aise koi karta hai kya? Do you have any idea what your parents are going through just because of your aloofness"

"I have failed them Sona..."He answered dejectedly.

"No you haven't ...one stupid exam does not decide your potential Dev. And remember one thing always...I will always be with you..no matter what"Sona could not see him like this.

"I am scared of letting my loved ones down. It is going to be difficult "He hugged her resignedly.

"Dev...this too shall pass"

They both looked at each other..realizing that both were thinking the same thing.

"I missed my best friend the most" Dev said softly. Sona excused herself and left his room. Dev didn't stop her for he knew very well that two more minutes and she will burst into tears and today he would not be able to console her.

The next day was hectic one. The entire Dixit family was super busy since morning. Sonakshi wanted to help but she was politely asked to just sit with Neha. By evening the girls were ready.Sonakshi wore a peacock blue coloured saree looking pretty as ever. Soon the groom's family arrived.

"How do I look jiju?" asked Nikki

"You look like a doll" Aditya complimented her genuinely.

"And Neha di?"

"Well...lets just say no comments..nahi to subah ho jaegi if I start describing my feelings for her right now"Adi was getting romantic by second. Neha blushed.

"And Sona di?"

"She is looking very elegant", Adi admitted.

"Thanks Adi", Sona smiled.

"Don't thank me. I am just feeling sorry for Dev today.Bechare ka kya haal hoga" Adi replied in low voice ofcourse!

"ji?"

"Nothing...where is Dev?" Adi hurriedly changed the topic.

"Pata nahi..."She looked around.

And she found him...looking handsome as ever ,busy talking to someone. And that someone was the person responsible for her all her problems.

Dev was busy talking to Ritwick, he was glad that the guy managed to take time off his busy schedule and come to the party. Everything had turned out to be great. The arrangement was perfect but that was expected. What he didn't expect was seeing Sonakshi in a saree. Never before had she wore a saree in life. Saree is one attire which simply enhances a women's sensuality if draped properly. That Sonakshi is beautiful was a well known fact..but today she looked sensational!! He realized that she is staring at him since long and he smiled. She didn't react at all. She just looked on, color draining from her face quickly. Is she sick again?' He wondered worriedly. Suddenly his thought process was interrupted by Ritwick.

"Mr. Dixit..i would like to congratulate the new couple"

"Oh Sure...let me introduce them to you" Dev replied leading the way.

Sona came out of her daze. Both Dev and Ritwick were coming towards her. Before she could react they both were there talking to the couple. Suddenly Dev remembered something and called Sona.

"Sona meet Mr. Ritwick Sen...remember we met him in Seattle..the day you got sick." Dev introduced her again to him.

Ritwick held out his hand and Sonakshi had to respond to it.

"Finally...we meet properly Miss Bose. I have heard a lot about you. Looks like everyone here loves you."

"Arey Sona Di to sabki favouriate hain" Nikki interrupted.

Sonakshi smiled shakily.

"I believe you were in my school in Delhi. Which batch?" Ritwick asked her.

"2006" Dev replied on her behalf seeing Sona in silent mode.

"Ah...I see"

"Excuse me..I have to make an important phone call" Sona mumbled and left hurriedly.

Dev could feel her discomfort. He could easy make out when her smile was fake and today Sona was just faking everything. He didn't give it much thought as Aditya's dad called him for some discussion.

"Dev...I need your car key. You forgot some of the stuff. Jaldi se keys do..main driver ko bhej kar mangwa leti hu" Ishwari asked him.

"Its in my room Maa...main deta hu" He answered while hurrying towards his room.

His otherwise spick and span room was a huge mess today. And he just couldn't find his keys.

Did I misplace it??' He thought worriedly...going through all his stuff again.

"Looking for this?" Came the voice from behind. (No prize to guess whose voice it was.)

Dev took a deep breath and turned.

"Where did you get it?"He questioned.

"Tumhare bed ke neeche para hua tha"She shrugged.

"How did you know I wanted it?"He asked again.

"I just knew"

"What were you doing in my room ..everyone is downstairs?"

"Aise hi...wanted some peace and quiet"She answered and handed over the keys to him.

"Thank you" He said and started to leave the place and stopped.

"Chalo mere sath..ring ceremony will start in few minutes" he didn't wanted to leave her alone tonight for some unexplainable reason.

"Tum jao..i will come in some time"

"Sona..kya hua?" he was genuinely concerned.

"Arey kuch nahi...I said naa..i have to make an important call".

"Party ke baad call kar lena..abhi chalo"He was no less persistent.

Sona shook her head.

Dev couldn't help but touch her forhead to check for her temperature.

"I am perfectly fine Dev"

"No you are not. Something is seriously wrong...mujhe batao..kya hua?" Dev asked stubbornly, as usual.

"Tum kitne stubborn ho naa...when I am saying that everything is all right ,you are still not believing me. See that's why I get irritated by you at times. Ek to ye saree mujhe pehenna para ..mujhse chala bhi nahi jaa raha isme and upar se..." She stopped midway because Dev simply hugged her.

She held onto him and took a deep breath.

"Sona..."He said softly.

"Hmmm", Her name always sounded good from his mouth.

"I love you", he said after a small pause.

"Oh"

"Ok..not the response I was looking for."Dev laughed...

"But I am here ok...just let me know if anything is wrong" he added.

"Hmmm"

"Maine kal jo kaha..tumhe bura laga?" He asked again.

"Mujhe tumhari koi baat ka buran ahi lagta" She answered emotionally.

They stayed like that for few more minutes.

"Sona..."

"Hmmm.."

"I need to go and give the keys to maa...come when you feel like...ring ceremony will start in next fifteen minutes", he hated to be the one runing this moment.

"Ok"

"Did I tell you that you look beautiful today." He inquired gently and kissed her cheek.

"Not yet", she murmured.

He kissed her another cheek.

"Ok...now I really have to go. Come fast." He remarked and left before the situation went out of hand.

The newly engaged couple looked ethereal. Neha looked happy and seeing her happiness Dev felt like he is at the top of the world. Today is the happiest day of my life' He thought. Where is Sonakshi??'

Sona was outside...sitting alone. Except the Dixits she hardly knew anyone and that was getting awkward for her. Luckily Ritwick seemed to have left the place so she was a bit relaxed.And then...

"Missing me?" She froze.

"You know you didn't even speak to me the two times we met Sona",Ritwick smiled and her blood boiled.

"It's Miss Sonakshi Bose for you"

"Ahh...the same spark!! Always loved that in you. Interestingly never thought I will meet you in United States of America. Seems like God has entwined our destiny togather"

"What do you want Ritwick?"Sona was tired now.

"You know the answer to that question sweetheart"

"I am not your sweetheart you bas***d!" She just could not stop herself from using foul language.

Ritwick laughed.

"Itna confidence? Looks like you have forgotten the fact that I can still make you most hated from sabki favouriate in matter of seconds"

Hearing this Sonakshi calmed down a bit.

"Ritwick...it's been seven years for god sake. Why cant we forget everything and ..."

"I would have forgotten...but dekho naa..tumhe dekh kar sabkuch yaad aa gaya. I was happy in my life..but wapas se tumhe mere saamne aana tha..."

Ritwick belonged to that elite class of the society who believed that they have copyright over everything and everyone around just because of his dad's money and power. He saw Sona on his farewell party. She was this shy,quiet and no- nonsense type of girl. There was something about her which attracted him the most. Needless to say he pursued her continuously and she rejected him repeatedly. By then she had become a challenge for him.

"Sonakshi...I want to talk to you" He asked her while she was trying to study in library.

"We have nothing to talk about ,stop harassing me."

"You know normally main kisi larki ko itna bhaav nahi deta" He said arrogantly.

"Ritwick..please leave ..otherwise..."

"Otherwise??"

"I will complain about you"Sona said quietly.

"To whom? I am no more a student here darling"

By now people had started to stare. Sonakshi hadn't told anyone about him yet because she thought she could handle the matter alone. So as to avoid creating the scene she started to leave the place.

"Today is my birthday...and I am not going to listen NO from you today", Ritwick held her hand now dragging her towards him.

Sonakshi slapped him hard across his face. This has to end...today!' her brain screamed.

"How dare you touch me? No means No you pervert. Don't you understand this little thing. And I love someone. But even if I was single the answer would have been No" She retorted sharply.

Ritwick was stunned...some of the people around him sniggered.

"You will regret it Sonakshi...you have no idea what can be the consequences!"He spoke after few minutes...menancingly.

"Oh is that so? Bring your best game forward. Now even I want to see what you have got"

"Ritwick...please ..."

"Miss Sonakshi Bose...bahut ghamand tha naa tumhe khud par. Kya hua? Oh btw...the love' of your life...he seems clueless about me."

"Ritwick you will not.."

"You really think you can stop me?"

Sona went speechless...Ritwick came close to her . Sonakshi was so disgusted by that closeness that she closed her eyes tightly.

"You wanted my best game right? You will get one sweetheart" He whispered in her ears and left.

Sona shivered ..it was getting cold.

She turned to go inside.

And there stood Dev...with that shocked expression on his face.

Note: This chapter contains a sneek peak of Ritwick's angle and not the entire past. Just an intro to the upcoming situation.
