Silent Vow

By Swaralika

He knew she could never be his, even if he wanted to. She knew he could be her, if he wanted to. For two years he knew he remembered her every day, and wanted her back every day. For two years she thought that he didn't love her, that he forgot her. But that night, under the starless sky and the roaring rain, they ignited a fire, a burning desire, and made a Silent Vow.

__________

It was a packed room. It was small, but the restaurant had a very soothing effect. Maybe on all the people inside the restaurant. Maybe just on her.

Maybe she was going mad.

With her left elbow on the table and the left palm supporting her head, she kept the red straw of her drink between her lips, sipped on to the fresh Kiwi juice and searched the dance floor. Almost all the people were out there, dancing with their loved ones. Only few were seated on their tables, her being one of them, sitting at one corner of the restaurant.

She was on a sweet' and exciting' blind date, thanks to Elena. But neither was anything sweet, nor was anything exciting. She looked down at her gold watch.

9:30 p.m. Two hours late. Wow.

Her first date, and she was being put out. Excellent. But no, she was not going to let some random person ruin her day. She had dressed up after a long time and she was not letting her hard work go in vain. With her glass of juice in her hand, she looked through the big glass pane right beside her, giving access to the road outside the room. The rain had increased it flow, and the people out there were running here and there, probably to go back home.
As her thoughts wandered, she didn't notice the man standing right next to her. At first, only his scent was recognisable. It was the same that she remembered from about two years ago. But when he spoke, in his ever so deep voice, she knew it was him.
"Care to dance?" he asked, his voice ever so deep. At that she turned behind, and saw his face mere inches away from her and his right palm in front of her, inviting her. She was shocked, to say the least. In these two years, she had not made contact with him for once. And here he was, asking her to dance with him. And before she could gather her senses, her hand was in his and she let him take her to the dance floor.

She was really going mad.

He was being a gentleman, chivalry at its display. His right hand rested on her lower back, but not too low for her discomfort and his left hand had her right one, clasped together. When she looked at him, she saw him staring at her, as they swayed to the low tune playing behind. She looked at their hands, enclosed together just like old times, and smiled.

He was staring at her. At first, he thought he did a mistake by asking her to dance. But when she gave her hand in his, he didn't know what to do or how to feel. So he did the only thing that he knew, stare at her. She was still a beauty. That same height, tall, slim, petite, fair and beautiful. And as he was admiring her silently, she looked up at him and saw him staring. He followed her gaze towards their joined hands, and saw her smile. A sad smile. He knew what she was thinking, and he knew that she knew he knew.

"Hey, look at me." He said, ever so slightly, as he brought her closer to him. She still continued to look at their hands, as if she hadn't a single word he had said.

"Hey...?" That broke her reverie.

"Hm?" she asked.

"Please. Just look at me. And let me look at you."

"Hm." She smiled. She smiled that genuine smile which he had seen two years ago. He looked into her chocolate brown eyes and smiled at her, as they danced to the next tune. He twirled her around and noticed that the long black dress she was wearing looked so perfect on her, fitting her in every corner and complimenting her curves in every way.

He was wearing a white shirt with a black suit. She smiled as she remembered his love for colours. He had brown eyes. So much brown, that it almost looked black. But that was the exclusiveness about his eyes. She decided, that if you looked in his eyes, you'll get lost. They were so beautiful, so complex. So familiar. And as she swayed to the tune in his arms, she felt that same feeling. That feeling of safety, comfort and calmness. And as she stared into his eyes and he into hers, they both reminisced all those moments they had shared two years ago. It was as if everything was back to normal. Everything was perfect. They were happy in their own bubble, forgetting about all the people surrounding them in that restaurant. And as fragile and short lived it was, it was their moment, Sonakshi and Dev's moment.

The music changed from a low beat tune to a high beat tune, breaking their ever so fragile bubble, and hence, making them move away from one another. She withdrew her hands from his. He turned around from her. And before she could say anything or do anything, he was gone. She gathered up her senses, saw him moving out of the door, and went after him.

"Dev!" she cried, running as fast as she could to catch him up. It came to her notice that the heels that she was wearing were only for modelling and not for running. That was the reason behind the pain in her leg and she decided to not wear them ever.

"Dev?" She tried again as she reached closer to him. He on the other hand, tried to walk away from her as fast as he could.

"OH MAA!"

Dev stopped. That was not what he had expected to hear from her mouth. He turned and as soon as he saw her, ran towards her. There she was, sitting on the road with her right ankle in her hand, wincing in pain. He knelt beside her and frowned. The rain came down with much greater force.

"If you can't handle them, then why do you wear them?" he asked, carefully examining her twisted ankle.

"Did it mean anything to you?" she asked instead, withering in pain as the rain stormed down.
He stopped abruptly and closed his eyes. He knew what she was talking about. He didn't want to look at her, for if he did, he wouldn't be able to see the pain that he had caused to her.

"No, it didn't." he replied calmly, letting go of her feet. He knew he had caused her pain, broken her heart again, probably much cruelly than the last time. Dev glanced at her, and saw tears streaming down her eyes, mixing with the rain. It was so painful, he looked down again.

"That's bullshit! I know you don't mean that!" she shouted, pushing him slightly on his right shoulder.
And she was right. It meant everything to him in the world. He had never loved anyone before she came along. She was his weakness, his biggest and only weakness. Seeing her eyes so desperate, so heartbroken, it almost made him cave. Almost. He noticed her moving closer. He wanted to run away. He was uncomfortable with her closeness. If she came any more closer to him, he wouldn't be able to control himself. And, he didn't trust himself.

"What do you want me to say, Sonakshi?" he knew he was hurting her. "That I love you? And want to be with you? That is bullshit. How could you possibly think of that? Whatever happened two years ago was a mistake. A big mistake. Alright?" He looked at her. She was so hurt. He couldn't handle this. Getting up, he decided to walk away from her.

She would've believed him. He spoke with such finality, she would've believe him. And she almost did. Almost. But when he looked at her, his eyes did not match the expression his face had. She saw something flicker in them for a moment before he casted them down. And even though she hadn't seen him for the past two years, she knew that what she had seen was something new. It was something so pure, something that she had never seen before.

"You were never good at lying to me, you know?" he heard her speak. Turning back, he saw her standing with all her body weight on her left foot. Her eyes had lightened up. A small smile played on her lips. And then, he knew that she knew. She came closer to him, and stared hard in his eyes. He too, unable to speak anything, did the same. No words were needed for them to convey their hearts to each other. Then suddenly, he felt her arms around his waist, and her head on his chest, hugging him. Dev was in such a turmoil. He wanted to hug her so badly. But if he did, the wall that he'd built up would crash down in an instant. Was he ready to do that?

Yes.

His hands came to her waist, and enclosed her in a tight hug. His head lied in the crook of her neck, breathing her scent. They stood there for a while, both basking in the feeling of each other. It was a moment they both wanted to cherish, for they had dreamed about it since a long time, remaining in each other's arms.

She pulled back and looked at him in the eyes. And even though she could see love in them, there was fear too.

"Don't be scared for me." She whispered, scooting closer if possible.

"How'd you know?" he asked.

"Your eyes tell me everything I need to know."

He rested his forehead on hers and looked at her deeply in to her eyes. It held love for him. He kissed her cheeks, tasting the mix of rain and salt. He kissed her lips lightly, still not breaking eye contact.
"What does this mean?" she asked, scared of his response.

"What's this mean?" she asked, scared of his response.

He could see the fear in her eyes as she asked him that question, and he knew that he couldn't ever get over her. He couldn't stand breaking her heart, yet again. He needed her more than she knew.

He had always thought he'd be a cold person, only living for his family. But when Sonakshi Bose walked into his life, he knew she was the one. As he stood there, staring into her eyes, he was surprised to realize that he wasn't mad at himself for losing control of himself. Standing there with her in his arms, he felt complete; he felt whole. He knew his family won't be happy with him for being with her, just the way they weren't happy two years ago, but he vowed to do everything in his power to protect her, as long as she was in his life. This time, he promised himself to not let anyone come in between them, even if it was his family. And with that last thought, he leaned down and kissed her deeply, letting every emotion his possessed fill the kiss. Letting the want to taste her, to feel her take over. He kissed her for all the times he hasn't been able to kiss her, for all the times he wasn't able to hold her in his arms. But most of all, he kissed her to show her how much he loved her, how much he missed her.

The kiss was amazing for her, she had never felt so much passion in just one kiss. She knew then that things would never be the same again. She wasn't sure if things were going for the good or the bad, but she knew that she never wanted to be in anyone else's arms for the rest of her life.

And that night, under the starless sky and the roaring rain, they ignited a fire, a burning desire, and made a silent vow. That kiss was a silent vow made by both that they would belong to each other. A vow bringing them together, never to be separated again.

"Come on," he said, as he grabbed her hand and started walking away, "we're going home."
