Yesterday & Today
Asha sat in the hospital bed and looked at her beautiful baby girl. Everything had stopped moving and in that moment they were alone. She felt complete.
This was supposed to be a time of celebration. Her family should be here, congratulating her, supporting her. Instead she was surrounded by silence
Was giving birth to a girl all that bad. They were ecstatic just a few days ago, giving her all sorts of advice. Her husband wasn't there either but she didn't care. The less she saw of him the better.
In fact she didn't care about much right now, just her baby girl. "How could anyone not want you" she cooed and her baby's face lit up.
All mothers must think that their baby was the prettiest but she knew for a fact that hers was the prettiest she had ever seen. Full head of her, chubby cheeks and eyes that shone like the sun.
"Have you thought of a name for the little one yet" a nurse interrupted her thoughts.
"Yes I have" she smiled her brightest smile. "Sonakshi, for my golden eyed baby."
The nurse just smiled leaving the pair to enjoy some time together.
That was the last happy day Asha could remember, everyday after that only got worse. She stared out of the window and reflected on her homey surroundings. She always hates the suburbs, mainly because of what it represented. White picket fences, seemingly perfect families and helpful neighbours, who did little to save her from the monster she married. It was a place that encouraged her tendency to feel fear
How much did she go through to get here. How much more until she was free.
"Its not rape Asha its marriage" she heard her mothers hushed voice. "Don't let anyone hear these new ideas you've been having. You'll ruin us. Its your duty." The words resounded through her entire being.
She looked at her mom in shock, not believing the words coming out of her mouth. "What about his duty to love and protect me. Apparently that was only against everyone else and not himself" she argued.
"Don't talk rubbish" her mom admonished. "Does he not provide for you, what else do you want. Why cant you just be grateful."
"This is your life now beta. He is your family. Stop complaining and live with it."
Some days were better than others. The days he didn't drink himself into a stupor. The days he didn't beat her and call her names.
"You know who's listening Asha." he asked rhetorically. "No one, not the neighbours, not your parents not even our unborn son."
She thought about complaining but who would believe her. By all appearances they had the perfect life. He painted this picture of a saint to hide how much of a devil he in fact was.
"Again with that damn baby" her husbands voice broke through her memories. She sighed and just waited for what came next, hopefully it wouldn't be painful. "Get my tea" he ordered.
Asha got up dutifully and put Sonakshi in her crib and rocked her to sleep. "It'll all be over soon baby" she whispered and made her way to the kitchen.
She robotically prepared the tea like she did every day and served it to him. "Its about time" he complained, again part of her daily routine.
The only thing different about this time was that there wouldn't be a next time. Asha watched emotionless as her loving husband drank the tea began to foam and die.
"She was finally free"
