"Im not coming back because I'm pregnant". He stood dumbfounded, the weight of her words resounded through his entire being.

Happiness,anger,fear,excitement were just a few of the emotions he was experiencing.

"you're what?" he asked, instead of the 1000 other questions plaguing his mind. If he was going to explode he wanted to make sure he heard correctly.

"I am pregnant" she repeated wiping the tears streaking down her cheek. He immediately moved to comfort her but she moved away from him leaving him hurt and disappointed. She needed to be strong for this.

"Its time I start thinking about what's good for us" placing a gentle hand on her stomach,"than what's good for me". Her confession lingered in between them, with her looking away unable to meet his eyes.

His first reaction was anger. Anger at her for thinking this way, anger at not being able to control the situation and anger at himself for not knowing what to say. He walked towards her and shook her,getting her attention.

"So thats it then, you're just going to give up because Ma's being difficult" he growled. She stared back at him with fiery eyes. He instantly felt better. Angry Sona he could take, it was the crying one that left him at odds.

"No Dev this isn't about Ma" she yelled increasing her tone to match his. "Ma would not have liked anyone you married."

Now it was his turn to look away, thinking of a way to defend her accusation.

"This is about you!" she continued.

He looked at her baffled, "What have I done!" he objected, confused as to where this was coming from.

"That's exactly it Dev, you've done nothing, absolutely nothing" she stated obviously.

Realising that she was getting ahead of herself, Sona moved towards Dev and took his face in her hands. He looked into her eyes and in that minute the world stopped. It was just them.

"I cannot come in second to your relationship anymore Dev" she said with a sad smile on her face.

"Till today I've done all the sacrifices. My family, my feelings...our relationship" she paused needing a minute before she continued.

"For her... just so she would accept me. Just so she would like me and see that I'm not what she thinks i am" she cried.

His heart went out to her, he knew that convincing his mom would be a challenge but he didn't realise the extent to which she was being affected.

"Im not some woman trying to steal her son away from her and I'm not with you because I need your money. I'm with you because...I love you and I love her because you love her."

"Sona" Dev moved to interrupt but she covered his mouth with her hand so she could finish.

"Don't try to convince me Dev, our relationship can take a backseat but our child cannot.Our child needs to know they are your number one priority, that they wont come second to your mother."

"Can you do that Dev?" she asked looking at him almost hopeful. "All your life you have been the perfect son.Can you for once be on my team and remind me what its like to have a husband.

This was his moment to speak, his moment to brush away all her concerns and just be there for her like she needed him to be, but he couldn't . He just couldn't. She nodded understanding what his silence meant and motioned for him to leave. "Until then Dev, I'm not coming back"

He walked towards the door with the biggest dilemma he had ever faced in his life. He turned around determined once again.

"What would you have me do Sona" he tried.She is my mom, she's done so much for me. Everything I am is because of her, don't you see that.

"Ofcourse I do Dev all Im asking is for you to stand up for me...Stand up for us" she expressed as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.

"I do.." he whispered, unsure of himself.

"No you don't Dev if you did we wouldn't be here right now"

"but i love you Sona" he expressed knowing that it was the one thing that was true.

"and i love you...but sometimes thats just not enough"
