Who entertained the entertainer? Who left Mr Gregarious speechless? And if it's all about the family, which one is he dying to get on his show? Karan Johar takes on a rapid fire round
Most stylish
Bipasha looked smashing in burgundy in the first season. Kareena looked great this season and Preity also looked wonderful.
Most spontaneous
Kareena. But the cleverest, wittiest answers undoubtedly come from Shah Rukh Khan. He has the best sense of humour. That man is brilliant. He's great television.
Most entertaining
Sanjay Leela Bhansali with Mallika Sherawat. He was very amusing.
The Kapoors were the most entertaining! Randhir has the best sense of humour ever. It's a funny bone family.
Reema, the younger sister who made her debut on TV, told me, 'I've become a star! I'm getting mobbed at Selfridges and Macys! You have launched me.' I have the great honour of having launched Raj Kapoor's daughter at 50.
Left me speechless
It happens very rarely, but Rakhi again. And from the first season, Abhishek and Preity. They are the king and queen of talk.
They are talkathons 2006, 7 whatever. On that show, I was like, 'Nobody is listening to me! It's my talk show!'
Biggest surprise
Rakhi Sawant. I thought she would be a quote a minute and in your face.
But she was human. I felt like reaching out to her.
When she got to tears, I knew that moment was genuine because she came in so perky.
I felt I had talked to someone who really struggled and who had a strong survival instinct. She's an achiever. I adore her.
The episode I like to watch over and over
Rani-Kareena. They were hilarious — that's great repeat value. And the Kapoor khandaan. So happy that it puts your faith back into family. You want to go back and give your mum a hug.
My wishlist
Salman. Dying to get him on the show. He's gifted with a terrific sense of humour and people rarely see that side of him. He's come on KBC with Shah Rukh and I'm going to beg and plead. I'm very keen to do a family show – Salimsaab, Arbaaz and Sohail. They are a great family and what male bonding!
Rekha…
I tried to get her in the first season and I left it at that. I haven't gone back to her but I would love to. With her legendary status, I think it's difficult to combine her.
Person I had to pep up the most
Reema, who then spoke nineteen to the dozen. She pretended to be nervous and then Chimpoo had to tell her, 'Control yourself!' she kept saying, 'They are all stars, what will I do in front of the camera?' Hyper, hyper, hyper and suddenly she took off.
We were like, 'What happened there?' Bobby is camera shy. In the second season, we told him, 'Come on Bobby!' He's such great fun. And he won the hamper!
Best vibes
The Bachchan men on the first show. Abhishek and Preity were superb and Shah Rukh and Kajol on opening were fantastic.
Most political guest
Richard Gere. I had to research the show a lot. I didn't want anyone to come on the show and think I was some dumb bimbo.
He made me work for a change. He didn't want to get flippant — he was here for a cause. When he asked my point of view, thank god I had one! He's such a charming, chivalrous man.
My mom's favourite episode
She loved the Kapoors — she's also very close to the family. She loved Ekta Kapoor and her three heroes. She's a big fan so that show she watched twice. She always tells me, 'Be happy I'm involved in their lives and not yours.' I have a different karmic connection with Ekta.
We're both Geminis, adore Sunita, have religious-sounding production houses, nervous flyers and unmarried in our thirties. We've both scratched Sunita's shoulder on turbulent flights.
Adi Chopra, on the show?
Do I want my head cut off? When I know the answer, why should I bother? Having said that, I tried once and he looked at me and said, 'Are you joking?'
That was enough to shut me up. If there's anyone petrified of him, it's me. I don't fear anyone as much as him. He fires me, you don't know. He shouts at me.
Tempted to repeat
Shah Rukh. I've held back myself this time – he came thrice in my first season.
Cattier than me
Is there someone like that? Sorry, no, I think I wear that crown. I get worse when the lights dim.
If I had to release the behind-the-scenes footage I don't think I'd have a face left in the industry anymore. I'd have to move to Tokyo.
My remaining guests
The Bachchan family, who I want on this season. I'm going to beg and plead to the Khan family. I'd love to get Javed and Shabana — lovely personalities.
I have thoughts on the music fraternity. Anil Kapoor and Akshaye Khanna; I'm bringing them together.
Third season?
If this is the format, well, I'd like to put Koffee on hold and come back to it later. Star is very happy with the Bollywood vibe.
If I push this into third, it might run out. Let people make more enemies, lovers and controversies and I'll come back in a few years.
Koffee With Karan is just released in German and it's available on DVD in London. |
'I'm doing animation'
On his films: This year, there's nothing, but next year, there's lots. Tarun Mansukhani and Siddharth Malhotra will be directing two films for me.
I have an animation film that I'm really excited about that I'll release the details of soon. My directed film will start February or March next year.
It's not at all about relationships. These are four projects — I took the year off to structure all this for Dharma,to expand the production house. By virtue of its content, my film has to be based in America. But not in New York. 'I'm on auto-pilot'
On compeering and hosting: I'm on auto-pilot on these shows now. I say it in a positive way, but when I want to rehearse, people say, 'Shut up and read the teleprompter!'
Everyone else gets hyper and I'm taken for granted. I'm in that zone now. I've been comfortable on stage ever since I did elocution and debates in school. I don't get stage fright. It's always the first line you read out. If that's good, you're fine for life! 'I may do another talk show'
On his NDTV tie-up: I have equity in the company and am creatively involved with it. Sameer Nair does a great job of running it. I may produce or even do a talk show for them like Koffee With Karan. Talks are on. | |
