I think you mean Ashutosh Gowarikar, but then let me tell u that Lagaan was not his first film. His first film as a director was Baazi starring Aamir Khan, in which Aamir Khan started a trend of sorts by becoming the first male actor to dress like a woman. This film sank without a trace, but Aamir and Ashu forged a friendship. This is why Aamir, despite being a busy and choosy star, agreed to play the lead role in Ashu's next film Lagaan. Aamir also had to step in as producer because Ashu was not getting any producers for Lagaan owing to his first film being a huge flop.
