August 19 is the day when sisters tie the sacred thread of love, on their brother's wrist, and in return, the brothers promise to protect them against all troubles . Screen caught up with the TV stars to see how they celebrated this traditional Indian festival

Although our serials are based on the family traditions and customs, the Raksha Bandhan festival is not celebrated with as much gutso as say a karva chaut. Ritturaj and Delnaz agree but say this is because soaps concentrate more on a husband-wife relation rather then the bond between a brother and sister. No serial has been made so far which focuses exclusively on this relationship. Our TV stars, however, celebrate this bond of love whether they have a real sister/brother or not. Juhi Parmar (Kumkum) is very protective of her younger brother. One day when they were kids and one boy beat him up, she jumped on him and really gave him a pasting of his life, saying no one messes with my kid brother. Even now, when she does not like any of his girlfriends, she makes her views crystal clear. Actually he understands her feelings from her killer looks.

Tassnim Shiekh(Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi) who does not have a real brother considers Anuj Saxena (Kkusum) as her brother. She, however, does not believe in the formal ceremony of Rakhi, as she feels that it not necessary to have a particular day to prove your love for your sibling. "Many brothers and sisters do not meet each other throughout the whole year but celebrate Rakhi, what type of love is this?" she asks. But having said this, Tasnim wants to communicate with bhaiyya Anuj that she really loves and cares for him. When we asked the stars as to what gifts do they expect from their brother Dolly Sohi (Bhabhi) said that earlier when her younger brother was not working, she gave gifts, but now since he is working, she is expecting a good gift. Delnaz does not believe in taking gifts. "In any case, this aspect of giving and taking presents is just a formality," she states.

Rittu Raj believes that after marriage, relations between brothers and sisters does get a little strained, due to personal preoccupations and distance. His sister lives in the States. However, Delnaz is of the view that if there is true love distance doesn't matter. However, it helps that her brother Bhaktiar lives right here in Mumbai.

Manini De (Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin) feels that the festival is getting more and more commercialized. She feels that the concept of greeting cards for rakhi makes no sense. Juhi Parmar on the other hand feels that even in this rampant commercialization there are people for whom emotion matters. Juhi does not miss having a real brother, for her cousins have been like real brothers to her, Tassnim on the other hand, does miss having a real brother, but takes solace in the fact that because she does not have somebody to protect her, she has become stronger in life.

Actually, with women becoming stronger, they believe that they are capable of taking care of themselves. In fact Tassnim feels that at times brothers need somebody to protect them. Manini while accepting the above concept of reverse protection, also feels that the thread is more a symbol of assurance that somebody is there for you when you need him. She feels that in today's day and age the protection/assurance need not be physical; rather it is emotional which today is more important.

Take Care
