INTERVIEW 11—(SOME PERSONAL Q's)
On your sex appeal
My eyes. Girls find it very mysterious and intense. That's also the first thing that they notice about me and they really like it. I think all women like that depth and intensity in a man. Even I would like an element of mystery about a woman. The challenge would be to unravel the mystery about her (laughs).
How girls react to you
Different girls react differently. Some girls find me very sweet and cute, the typical boy next door sort. On the other hand some find me mysterious, naughty and intense. Some girls get attracted to my eyes, while some find my face attractive. I think I come across as a charmer to them. However, at times some girls find my body language very putting off. They think I have an attitude problem. But at times that's a put on when I don't want to talk to certain girls who want to cling on to me unnecessarily.
Your first date
It happened with my first girlfriend. I was 16 then. It was a rainy day. I didn't have my car so we traveled in an auto. We went to a small joint in Versova. That was when she told me that she liked me. I too admitted my love for her. It was the most beautiful date I've ever had. We chatted for a long time and got over our awkwardness. I dropped her home after that. We went around for three years after that.
Your first crush
I was in the ninth standard. She was in the eleventh std. and often came to my building. She watched me play Cricket and I made sure I played well when she was around. She was gorgeous. She was quite amused when she heard about my crush as she felt I looked like her kid brother. That was the end of my crush (laughs).
Your most cherished compliment
A lot of people have told me that I have a slight resemblance to Tom Cruise. It amuses me but I find it highly flattering too. I am a great fan of Cruise.
Your wildest compliment
One of my ex-girlfriends told me that she couldn't wait to have a physical relationship with me (laughs).
Love & romance...
I am single and available today but only for women who want to fall in love. I'm bored of flings. Everyone craves for love but very few get it. I'm waiting to find true love, the sort you can see in a person's eyes. I think I had found true love with my first girlfriend but was too young then. It was also the circumstances that didn't let it last. Romance is just being with the person I love. The ambience only adds to it.
Lust...
It is something I have to control all the time (laughs). I have succeeded so far and am proud of it. I prefer love to lust but I lust for Alicia Sylverstone. There's something very different about her. She's extremely cute and naughty but hot at the same time.
On a nudist beach
I'm not the sort to roam around nude on a beach. So I wouldn't be nude but would surely have a good visual treat (laughs). It's not something one gets to see everyday. But I'd get bored after a while. Then I would take a nice walk or have a nice massage.
What if a girl made a pass at you?
If it's one of those boring and clichd kinds of pass, I'd brush it aside politely. Otherwise, depending on the girl, I'd become friends with her.
Would you ask a girl out if you liked her but didn't know her well?
Yeah, I would. To start with, it would be a long drive followed by dinner. I'd get to know her better.
Your dream date
It has to be with the person I really love. I'd pick her up in the morning and drive down to Goa where a lovely, cosy room would be booked in advance. I'd surprise her with flowers and champagne. We'd go out for a walk followed by a candlelit dinner. Maybe the date would get extended (laughs).
Would you dress to impress a girl?
I always dress well especially when I'm going out with someone special. It would be a pair of blue jeans, white shirt, brown buck leather shoes and a nice brown belt.
Flirtations...
I don't flirt any more but I'm still an amazing verbal flirt.
Marriage...
I'd definitely like to get married but not for the next few years. I want to get married when I am ready for it both emotionally and financially.
What if your girl caught you with your pants down?
I'd never do that if I were in a serious relationship.
Your wildest bedroom fantasy
Taking a shower with my girl in a bathroom which also has a tub. That's a big turn on for me. A waterbed in my bathroom would be just perfect.
Are women a necessary evil?
I wouldn't call them evil. There are some women who are off track but there are still some good ones too.
(AMIT VERMA has done a plethora of ads; the AirTel ad with Shah Rukh Khan, the :Lifebuoy ad and the Thums Up campaign. These are the prominent ones. Presently he is busy with 'Hotel Kingston' and 'Khichdi' on the small screen. The big screen doesn't seem very far away for this good looking guy)

INTERVIEW-12---
He is very serious about acting and is confident he will make it to Bollywood in a big way. Right now doing interesting roles on television, Amit Varma, wants to focus on his career, though a love wouldn't hurt if he meets the 'right' girl, he tells PREMA K.

Tell us about your shows presently on air
Hotel Kingston is one of the popular shows on Star One. I play Vish, the GM of the hotel. The owner's daughter, Shelly, is the MD of the hotel. She is a snob and full of attitude. We start with a love-hate relationship. I'm a very laid back sort and don't care for her attitude at all. Finally, we fall for each other. The serial is a romantic 'dramedy' as it has romance, drama, and comedy (laughs). It's about the problems that happen in a hotel. There are a lot of very subtle, natural, cute and light moments. People tell me that Vish is a tailor made role for me.

Do you agree?
I'd say that I'm 40% Vish and the rest I've created. Vish is a complete charmer and if I'm not bragging, then I'm a charmer too. Vish is very cool and spontaneous. He takes instant decisions and is very instinctive. I'm a bit confused at times and very logical and analytical. Vish is a complete flirt. I'm only a verbal flirt.

What about your other show?
I am doing Khichdi, in which I play Raju, Praful's brother and Babuji's youngest son. He is the only sensible, level headed character in the family. The rest are insane. He's a complete flirt too.

Which of the two shows are you more kicked about?
Definitely Kingston. I'm playing the main lead in it whereas I'm just one of the characters in Khichdi. There's a lot I've learnt from my seniors in Khichdi but I'm shouldering Kingston. It's like my baby. I'm emotionally attached to Khichdi as it's my first show and have been working on it for three years.

How did you get into acting?
I did ramp shows but realized it wasn't really my cup of tea. I did a lot of commercials. The popular one is the Airtel ad with Shah Rukh Khan. My music video, Haan Pehli Baar became very popular. I decided to give acting a shot after that as I was always inclined towards acting. I started theatre with Kader Khan. I did it for a couple of years.

How about other serials?
I've got a lot of offers but am very occupied with Kingston. We shoot for almost 22 days a month. I've started with Star and am very keen on doing more shows with them. I share good relations with them. But I'm open to other channels too.

What about films?
I'm definitely targeting films. I'm planning to take a small break after Kingston goes off air. I will appoint a PR person and market myself. It's very important to market oneself well today. It's important for me to meet the right people if I want to play lead roles in good films. It's also a more presentable way of meeting people. I've done a children's film, Detective Nani. I'm playing a teenage heartthrob in it. It's a kind of thriller. My nani and girlfriend solve all the kidnapping cases.

Don't you feel that most TV actors are given a raw deal in films?
They are, but it's their choice. This is a very insecure line and people want to make the most of what's coming their way. It's also difficult to refuse work here. Egos are hurt. I'll be very careful in my choice of roles. I don't want to overexpose myself on television too. I don't want to get too popular on television.

Any offers to anchor shows?
I'd love to, if I were offered one. But so far, I haven't been offered any. I don't know how good I will be at it but I feel I'm a better actor than an anchor.

Somewhere you've said that you're 'single and available'!
I've been into relationships earlier but unfortunately, they never worked out. I want to take it easy on my love life now and focus on my work. But I believe that these things happen. If I meet Ms. Right, then I will surely go ahead. I've become very choosy and don't want to get into a relationship just for the sake of being in one.

What's Ms. Right like?
She has to be intelligent with a great sense of humour. I hate dumb women. She also has to be honest, sincere, presentable, understanding and someone I can move around with in society. She should preferably be someone outside this industry, but I don't mind an actress if she has all these qualities.

Why are you not very keen on an actress girlfriend?
People say that there is better understanding when it's an actor couple as we have crazy schedules. There is a lot of stress involved in our industry which can kill a relationship. So it's better if my girlfriend is from some other industry.

How would you want to see yourself five years from now?
As a superstar! I'm very optimistic. I want to be recognized as a good actor and also be known as a good human being. That's also very important. I want to be one of the popular people around.

ARTICLE (PROFIT OF BEEING A STAR)—

One can really get away with a lot of these things because of being a star !
Amit Varma will vouch for this. Recently Amitwas caught for breaking a traffic rule.
But when the cop saw that it was Amit, he let the guy go.
Why? because his son is a big fan of Amit and used to be glued to Amit's serials Hotel Kingston and Instant Khichdi on Star One.
That was the only reason the cop left him without fining him. That must have pleased the cop's kid and Amit too.

WHEN AV FELT HE WAS POPULAR FOR THE FIRST TIME---
It was two and a half months after Hotel Kingston went on air, I was in Malad, and I was mobbed by a group of college students. They were all so excited to see me and clicked my pictures with their phone and took my autograph.

They wouldn't let go off me. I was surprised at the response, because Star One was a new channel and it was already so well-known and I felt even more overwhelmed because I was seen on television in small ads and in Khichdi, but this was the first time I was playing the protagonist in Hotel Kingston and that's the moment I felt like a star. It was a very special moment.

ARTICLE (HONEYMOON OF ROHAN)

After witnessing Rohan Kapoor's lavish wedding to his fiance on Kituu Sabb Jaantii Hai on Sahara don't expect to see much of him on the show. Amit Verma, aka Rohan, is exhausted and tired of the daily grind and has decided to take a month-long break and chill out with his family in the city. And as luck would have it, Amit's track in the serial gives him the freedom to do so. In this free time, Amit plans to work out and get into top shape. Hopefully the time spent away from
the sets will prove to be a refreshing break.

Ami Trivedi:

I am as nervous as a school kid awaiting her results," exclaims Ami Trivedi, who plays the lead in Sahara One's Kituu Sabb Jaantii Hai, from tonight.

The 20-something actress will essay a small-town girl, Katyayani Purohit, wanting to make it as a journalist. Here, Trivedi talks about how she got the role and her anxiety over audience reaction.

How did you get the role?

It was quite simple, I was asked to audition, and as soon as it got over, they told me I had got the job. My look and personality went hand in hand with how Kituu looks and behaves.

Like me, Kituu is a romantic at heart who likes to take each day as it comes. I haven't shot much for the show, so I'm not really sure how the character will develop. Before this, I have worked in Khichdi, Kumkum and a couple of other shows.

You play a reporter — did you interact with anyone from the media for this?

I have a very close friend, who is a journalist with a trade magazine. So I knew how he reacts to certain situations and how he talks. Anyway, Kituu still has time before she becomes a reporter. Till then, she's busy spending time with her family and spreading smiles.

Are you afraid of being compared to Jassi? Is there a makeover lined up for you?

I am definitely not Jassi. The show and my character have nothing to do with her. A lot of people ask me the same question, but Kituu has an identity of her own. As far as a makeover is concerned, it's too early to say anything – but if it's what the story demands, then why not?

Tell us something about your co-star…

I am working opposite Amit Verma (Hotel Kingston). Interestingly we played brother-and-sister in Khichdi; here, he's my romantic interest. Amit is a chilled out, no-hassles guy. He's great fun to work with.

Besides your own, there are three other shows launching today — are you nervous?

I would be lying if I said I am not. I am a spiritual person, constantly praying to God, asking him to bless me and to give this show the success it deserves. Competition is good and healthy, as it lets the best show emerge the winner.

Amit Verma, a pucca Mumbai guy, spent his early childhood in Shivaji Park. He studied at Don Bosco, and after finishing school, his family moved to Andheri, where Amit studies Arts at Mithibai college.

His first brush with fame was when Amit started getting a lot of offers for doing ads. Close-up and Airtel ads with Shah Rukh Khan are recalled as the most memorable ads he's done. Khichdi was the first serial Amit did, where he played the lovable Raju.

Amit is also in the new avtaar of Khichdi - Instant Khichdi - and Hotel Kingston on Star One. In the latter, Amit plays the central character of Vish. He feels Vish is quite similar to himself in real life.
