part 1
"yes, dad everything is packed and am going to make my way to the airport within a hour." she explained to her father on the phone."There will be a driver outside the airport, to pick you up."Arohi ruffled through her beige pouch to make sure her passport was there. "Okay dad, I get the drill" she was not looking forward to her trip to Punjab, it just brought bad memories. Once when she was 10 her cousin pushed her into a pile of cow poo. Oh, she can still remember that horrible stench. She still has flashbacks of the event. "Okay...Okay, Have a good flight beta." her dad said from the other end."Thank you dad, love you bye." she tucked her phone into the pockets of beige shorts and zipped her black suitcase. Seconds later a car beeped from outside,"oh that must be my taxi"she grabbed her belongings, switched the lights off of the apartment and made her way outside. Her luggage was placed in boot and she hopped into the taxi."Heathrow airport" the driver asked for confirmation."Yes" arohi responded. She was going to meet her family after 3 years. For the past 9 years London had become her home, she loved the independence and the free lifestyle. Yet there still was an emptiness that remained which was her family. They were a strange little band of characters trudging through life sharing diseases and secrets, destroying one another's sleep, hiding shampoo, borrowing money, locking each other out of our rooms, inflicting pain and kissing to heal it in the same instant, sharing, laughing, defending, and trying to figure out the common thread or stitch that bound all of them together. She could not believe that she was leaving for her sister Sara wedding.
(8 hours later)
Arohi collected her luggage and made her way out of the airport. She scanned the place to find her driver. She took a few step towards the kerb, from there she saw a middle aged man holding a board with her name written in black (Arohi singhania). Arohi called him over and he placed her belongings into the boot, whilst arohi made her self comfertable in the car. As the driver finished the task he started the car and they set off on the roads. 10 minutes into the journey arohi began to feel really warm, a glance down the road and everything looked surreal; people were turning fluid as they entered a heat wave one could only discern from a distance. Old men were walking slower, looking active. But the heat was so intense, so energy-sapping. Trees, heavily laden with summer's full bloom of leaves, no breeze to disturb the sun's relentless, it was a burning attack. "Could you please put the AC on higher" arohi demanded. The driver kept turning the button round and round,"sorry mam, it's broken" Arohi's eyes widened, she was jet lagged and extremely shattered and now the AC stopped working. So she decided to open the window, she pushed her hair back and tried to relax."Oh jeez! What's that smell?" the putrid unpleasant smell that wafted from the dripping rancid air it was soaking in the hot sun. "It's coming from the farm, gobar de kushboo." The driver chuckled underneath his breath. Shortly after the smell drifted the car began to jolt and glitch until it came to a halt. Arohi rolled her eyes put her hand on her head," what now!" the driver came out of car and began examining the engine, where as Arohi was really getting fed up. The driver walked over to Arohi," I am going to call the mechanic; I will be about 5 minutes." Arohi smiled and tried to keep the frustration within her. As soon as the driver left Arohi came out of the car and began bashing it with her foot. Minutes later a young man, about six foot dressed in black salwar kameez walked passed and ignored her presence. "Oi, you can't you help me?" the young man turned around, "talking to me?" Arohi looked around there was nobody else around the area," no am talking to myself." She said sarcastically. "Fine!" and he began walking again. "Wait! Wait!" the young man stopped and made his way over to the car. He looked Arohi from top to bottom, and then opened the car bonnet to see what was wrong. He began fixing the problem, once he finished he closed the bonnet. He was done he called Arohi over."Oi, it's fixed" Arohi sighed in relief, finally there was some hope in reaching home any time soon. "One more thing, you're the one that needed the help, so lower your attitude." He grinned cheekily at her." Listen, do you know who I am." Arohi raised her voice. "arghh'" Arohi began screaming. The young man glanced around but all he could see was rows of fields and bunch of cows, nothing appeared to be scary. "Cow!, crap'ewww. Get it away from me." He burst out laughing, Arohi face turned bright red, and she folded her arms." I've had bad incidents when I was younger, so cut it out." He stopped laughing and collected himself, "sorry." As he finished the driver came back with the mechanic." Ina da kio fida nahi, kadi main fixed karshodi ay." The young man told the driver, who thanked him. Arohi got into the car with the window down, "by the way am arjun and you?" she did not respond and closed her window to avoid any conversation.
(At home)
12 minutes later she reached home, she entered her home to see a batch of people waiting on her arrival. Arohi quickly ran to her mother and hugged her tightly. As she hugged her mother she found joy and warm space. She met her dad, Grandma Dj, Sister Sara and brother Jai. "You have gone so skinny, don't you eat? Dj asked worriedly." now that you here am going to feed you fresh desi gee." Arohi smiled,"Dj how am I skinny?" "Okay that enough, Arohi go upstairs and have some rest. You and your Dj can discuss your weight later."
Arohi came out of the shower and slipped into her PJ's. She threw the towel on the chair. "How was the journey?" Sara raised the question. "Gosh! Please don't ask' the flight was fine but once I got into the car it started to go wrong. First the AC stopped working, then there was a awful smell and finally the car broke down." Arohi sat on her bed and laid back. "Seems like it you have had a nice trip." Sara teased. "Oh, forget the incident with the cows and this Moron" Sara sat beside her, "who?" She asked in a puzzled tone." When the car broke down, this guy helped fix it up. He was so'ughh, he was annoying and rude. If I see him again, I swear am going to kill him." He got up her nerves so quickly, just the thought of him now made Arohi cringe into a compressed hole. "Who was he?" Arohi shrugged, "don't know his name was aya...ar..or something, anyway forget him, so what's the plan?" she asked sipping on a cold glass of water." I'll tell you the plan tomorrow but for now get some sleep and be ready by 10:00am tomorrow." Arohi nodded and Sara left her room, she switched the lamp off near her bedside table and slipped into her sleep.
