Appreciation Post for Ruheen
Chapter 1
Arohi looked around the crowded room, only a light sigh escaped from her over-crowded heart. Music blared from two amplifiers, dancing bodies were everywhere and the flashing lights were giving her a headache. The mood and the setting was perfect. She should be enjoying herself: after all she was in her living room. It was her twenty-first birthday party! It was all her friends.
She had no intention of celebrating her birthday this year but her friends wouldn't listen to her so it was Shefali's idea to change her living room into a disco instead of going out. Arohi just couldn't believe that she has actually agreed to something like this but knowing Shefali she had to give in. Parties are meant to be fun and she should really enjoy but 'there is always a but in her life nowadays.
She turned her back on the crowd and stared out of the window to the blackness beyond. She felt flat. It was futile to worry about the future , she knew but she just could not seem to be able to help it.
From Monday she would start working as a junior partner in the firm of Sharma-Singhania , an import and export firm started forty years ago by her late father, Sudhir Sharma and his childhood friend, Rudra Pratap Singhania. Rudra Pratap Singhania later on moved to Greece and got married to a Cretan lady. But shortly after the birth of his son Arjun, his wife died and then he moved back to India again. But it wasn't the thought of work that bothered her, neither the fact that the firm has diversified into other areas. No, her real worry was that she would have to meet Arjun Singhania, her nemesis, again.
Arjun Singhania is the chairman and managing director and a despot to boot, as she knew from past experince 'and also until today , he had been the trustee of her thirty percent share of the business, left to her by her father. As a child Arohi always considered Arjun a friend, even though he was 8 years older than her. But that has ended with the death of her father. For the last three years any communication between had been strictly business, conducted through lawyers and the occasional telephone calls. It was easier as Arjun was hardly in Mumbai and so their paths hardly crossed even in social gatherings. And Arohi always avoided parties where there was any chance of meeting this arrogant 'half 'blood' Greek God.
A frown creased her smooth brow. She is really looking forward to take her place in her father's firm but Arjun Singhania was the only fly in the ointment. Although he is based in London, looking after their foreign outsourcing but now that he is back in Mumbai for a while she cringed at the thought of seeing him , not al all sure of her ability to face up to him.
For Heave's sake Arohi! She chided herself. She is a bright , intelligent woman with a degree in Accountancy and definitely no longer the naive eighteen-year-old girl she had been when she had last seen Arjun. An immature girl in love with the idea of love.
'Humph" she snorted, disgusted with the memory of her much younger, gullible self. "You are a fool, Arohi. You have nothing to worry about" she told herself firmly, unaware that she had actually spoken out loud.
"If you say so Arohi, darling. Far be it from me to disagree with a beautiful lady" The deep melodious voice made her shiver, her whole body trembled. She would have known that voice anywhere in the whole world. It couldn't be ! she felt almost sick. She raised her eyes and stared at the image of the couple reflected in the window pane.
Her own reflection showed a young woman of average height with wavy black hair and extremely attractive features. She wore a red dress that clung to the soft curves of her body and on down to expose her long, shapely legs. A well-built, tall, extremely handsome man was hovering behind her.Wide shoulders seemed to shadow her. Slowly she turned around to face him.
"You, Arjun", she murmered finally finding her voice and hating the way it quavered. She tilted her head back and looked up into his tanned, attractive face. He was watching her, laughter lighting his hazel eyes. He knew very well that he has shocked her beyond imagination. "what are you doing here?' she demanded curtly."I didn't invite you".
"An oversight on your part Arohi, but I forgive you." He drawled mockingly. "you know that I wouldn't miss your twenty-first birthday for the world"
She opened her mouth to reply him back but never got the chance. Two large hands settle on her bare shoulders and a firm male mouth descended on her parted lips.Whatever she was about to say seems to vanish from her mind at the first touch of his mouth on hers. She closed her eyes.Arohi knew she should resist and lifted her free hand to press against the hard wall of chest , but for some reason her fingers spread out instead , over the soft silk of his shirt.
It was Arjun who broke the kiss , murmering against her mouth. "Happy birthday, sweetheart" Then, lifting his head and staring down into her flushed , beautiful face, he winked 'the chemistry is till fizzing'
