Chapter 6
Arjun's villa was set on the hills above Paphos, in the Greek sector of the island of Cyprus. The view before Arohi was magnificinet: the enticingly clear swimmiing pool, the lush garden and the undulating while walls of the villa gave her a sense of peace and tranquillity. Lounging by the poolside she could smell the fresh Mediterranean air.
Last night had been wonderful. Arjun had organised a huge party and they had become officially engaged. A tiny smile pursed her lips as she remembered the stunned look on Arjun's face when he had seen her coming down the stairs in her turqouise blue evening gown. Even she could not drag her gaze away to see Arjun in his perfectly fitted black ink suit. The night had been perfect. Amidst the loud cheering and the flow of champagne Arjun had bent down on his knees to propose and she had danced the night away in the arms of the man she loved, the man she was going to marry. The whole night he had been by her side; mingling and greeting people together. And then he had kissed her the way he had never done before. He had let her feel the possessive heat of his passion for her and deepened it with the promise of a loving future together.
She got introduced to Arjun's maternal family. Despite of the fact Rudra uncle re married after Arjun's mom's death still his Greek family kept in touch and came to bless the couple. They made her feel very much welcome into the family. Arohi met his stepmother, Kumud Singhania , who seemed to be a very accomplished lady. However Arohi was not so sure about Arjun's step-sister, Natasha and her best friend Gauri. Both the women had given her the most peculiar look and a positively evil smile. She could sense something odd in their attitude but her overwhelming happiness at that time preferred to ignore every other negativity.
Sighing for the second time Arohi rolled over on to her stomach on the lounger. As she twisted her diamond and sapphire engagement ring she got a lump in her throat, not just for its sheer beauty but for what it represented. It was getting hot so she moved the lounger in the shade and reminiscing on the happy memories dozed off to sleep. Her trance got disturbed as she heard her name being called from inside the villa. It was Arjun. Earlier this morning he had gone to Paphos for a business meeting and she was glad to find him back. She was just about to stand up and make her presence know when she could hear another voice floating from the open window just few yards away.
"Looking for your proposed child bride, Arjun, darling?" It was Gauri, who spoke. " I don't think you will be in such a a hurry to find her after what I have to say to you"."Gauri there is nothing you have to say that I want to hear. What are you doing here anyways and who the hell has invited you to my engagement?" Arohi could hear the increasing anger and impatience in Arjun's voice.
" Please Arjun, don't be like this. We have been lovers for the past three years. You just can't throw me out of your life like this". A sobbing sound followed.
"Lovers for three years" Arohi gasped and raising her hand to her mouth, she bit hard on her knuckle to stifle her cry of pain.
" Let go, Gauri, you are simply wasting yours and my time. I have told you it was over months ago. You have always known about the deal: it was an open relationship to cater mutual pleasure. No strings attached". Arjun had barked.
" Please Arjun, you have to listen to me .I know you still care for me. You can't possibly love that schoolgirl. She is just a kid. She will never be able to keep you happy or satisfied. Even Kumud aunty said that your engagement was more about cementing the business partnership firmly under your complete control that about love on your part"
" My reasons are my own, Gauri and are not up for discussion. Now get out of my face and stay out of it".
" That might be hard to do Arjun. Especially in seven months time when our child is born."
" Impossible and anyways I always use protection. Do yourself a favour and leave, before I have you thrown out".
Arohi could not believe her ears. This was an Arjun she had never heard before: hard and totally ruthless. But worse was to follow.
"Aren't you forgetting something Arjun? Two months ago, at the Mehta's house party in New York? You flew in, partially in the middle of the night and woke up in the morning in my bed. Protection was not something you bothered about then. I know the child is yours'.."
For a long moment there was silence. Then Arjun's " You did it deliberately. Didn't you?" shattered Arohi into pieces. She couldn't bear to hear the rest of the conversation. She had heard enough. Staggering to her feet, she silently took the servant's stairs to enter the house. She didn't want anybody to see her in this state but to her dismay she collided with Natasha. She managed to excuse herself from her enquiring eyes and once inside had locked the door. She collapsed on the bed, but could not cry. She was too traumatised for tears. All she could do was to stare blankly at the white walls as a sense of acute numbness engulfed her.
She had been used, exploited by the first man she had ever loved..ever trusted. She felt like an absolute fool for not realising that a sophisticated, mature man like Arjun Singhania couldn't possibly be interested in a naive young girl like her unless he had an ulterior motive. But she has been blinded by her love for him.
Nausea clawed at her stomach: the sense of betrayal ate into her very core. She felt ashamed and disgusted by her own gullibility. She could not understand that how could she be so wrong about a man she had known almost all her life, a man that she had trusted her body and soul with, a man her father thought would be able to look after her share of the business. She thumped the bed with her clenched fist and shouted out loud. Anger and pain pierced through her heart. Then the tears came. Arohi cried and cried until she had no tears left. She had no idea for how long she had been in the bedroom.
On his return to the villa, his eager calling of her name had aroused her from sleep. But since his conversation with Gauri he hadn't even bothered to look for her again. Confirmation of how little actually Arjun thought of her. Fresh tears welled up her eyes again. She felt so drained..so lonely...'so exposed'
She heaved herself off the bed and walked into the bathroom. She stepped into the shower and turned on the cold water. She hoped that cold water would numb her body and brain, but it was of no use. The image of Arjun and Gauri together tortured her mind. Three years'..they had been lovers for three years and they were having a baby together. Arjun's furious outburst " you did it deliberately" kept on ringing in her ears. And that was what had hurt her the most of all.
Arjun's hadn't tried to deny that the child was his. He was simply furious at being caught by the oldest trick. Neither he had even mentioned that he loved her and was marrying her for love. Arohi stepped out of the water and walked back to the bedroom. She pulled the diamond ring off her finger.
Her engagement ring. What a joke! While all the while she had considered herself engaged to Arjun since he had proposed her during Easter, he had felt no such commitment. He had continued to sleep with his long-time lover. A hollow laugh escaped her. She has grown up reading about Arjun's charisma with the female species but never thought that he could stoop this low. Just for the sake of some business consolidation he was even ready to marry her. She remembered her birthday night and his denial of what she was offering, his high moral stance. He wanted her to have the perfect wedding and wedding night. What a lie!
Sadly Arohi realised that he probably didn't even want her in a sexual way. All he wanted was control of her share of the company and then just to pacify her own demand he had to give in. She was too precious a business deal for him to let go on just such a trivial issue. And she thought they had shared an almost mystical experience. Two people joined in body and soul. With that thought her sorrow began to change to anger and when she left the bedroom she wasn't sad but mad...mad with a cold fury. Then it came to her ...a way to escape this sham of a marriage with her pride intact and without revealing to anybody about what she knew.
In the end it was simple. She returned the engagement ring to Arjun emphasing on the fact that she was not ready for marriage or commitment. She had explicitly told him that she just wanted to go home and get on with her life with her friends like a normal teenager. A solitary tear had rolled down her check, a tear of self-pity. Considering her apprehension as wedding jitters when Arjun tried to change her mind by kissing her into submission, she had bluntly told him that she was only eighteen and far too young to get married. At this point she had stretched deliberately on their age difference and that she did not actually wanted to marry somebody who was way too old for her. When Arjun had tried to remind her of their impassioned night together she had crudely told him that night was her biggest mistake and she wanted to erase every memory of that night from her life.
It had been the reference to the age that had clinched it. The very next day Arjun had booked her flight back to Mumbai. The drive to the airport had been extremely quite and as she cleared immigration she could see through the veil of her pouring tears a man standing back with a mixture of anger, frustration and pain painted on his immensely handsome face.

@Priya..I love your confidence on Arjun...he is such a sweetheart though even I am feeling so sad for him...but as the saying goes "look before you leap'..it is not always fun for men who believes in open relationship...as I said earlier all deed of ours have repercussions on the present...I just hope that Arjun's hasn't really done anything silly...
