Meher came down the stairs hesitantly, she looked at all the faces looking up at her, but at one face in particular. His face was blank as she had seen for the past few months. She remembered why she was doing this...her father. Her father who finally was able to treat her with affection the way he treated Heer. She broke out of her thoughts as Heer nudged her to move down the stairs.
Preet looked at Meher as she came down stairs. He felt nothing. He hardly felt anything for anyone anymore.
Harman brought out the rings for the couple as only the families were present for the small wedding ceremony. He had always like meher- she had helped him a lot at his law firm, but he wasn't sure how his younger brother was going to treat her. Preet wasn't in the right state of mind to be getting married. He felt this was unfair to meher, but he didn't voice his concerns.
Teji watched as Meher's hands trembled as she put the varmala on Preet. She was angry at Balraaj for selling his daughter like this. Balraaj had always treated meher with indifference, he unconsciously held her responsible for her mother's death. Teji married balraaj after the death of his first wife and she treated heer and meher as her own children. She was exspecially close to meher since she had never known her real mother. Heer and meher's mother had died while giving birth to meher.
Balraj finally felt his shoulders weaken. Teji's words before the engagement rang in his ears..." you are selling your daughter and she will happily so it just to hope that you will love her one day." Balraj's business had been doing poorly and if he did not get a loan, he would have to sell his ancesteral land. Lallit had become a huge canadian businessman in the last 20 years. Both friends got their children prem and heer married. they had been married for 1.5 years. Harman wanted to wait until he got married but Preet had fallen madly in love with balraj's neice, Ashlesha. they got married 3 months after prem-heer. one year after their marriage ashlesha left preet and no one knew why. Preet divorced ashlesha and became a stone. He did not talk or smile. his jovial personality was sorely missed.Gayathri and Lallit wanted their son's smile to return. Lalit had always chided Preet's masti and pranks but now he missed his son's teasing and love. Preet just worked and that was it. He would not talk to anybody about what had happened. Lallit had always disapproved of Balraaj's treatment of Meher and he loved the way she lit up his house everytime she came over. So lalit did something... he offered Balraaj money in return for meher's hand in marriage for preet. Balraaj accepted, he felt he was doing the right thing by marrying off meher. He believed preet was a good boy. He did not consider the stigma for meher being a second wife.
Meher was confused when she was told she was getting married. She had liked preet but did not really know him. Meher had never been fond of Ashlesha so she styed away from both of them. Now she was supposed to marry him? What about find her prince charming? She was supposed to be someone's second choice? She was devastated but did it for her father. She thought this was the only way to gain her father's love and for that she was willing to sacrifice her own chances at love.
