Hello everyone! 😃 *waves* Before I say ANYTHING about this shot..I'll have you know this is the first shot I actually 'researched' on...😛 Yeah I know nothing about the concept I picked...genius right? 😳 And secondly...I personally really enjoyed writing this one and so I hope you all like it too!😳 Specially the person it's for! 😃
She sighed as the last customer finally left the bar. She started wiping down the counters until she heard the door slam open; the wind helping its cause.
She tried to peer at the intruder but his hand was held up in front of his eyes. Probably shielding the bright lights, she thought to herself.
"Is this place open?"
She raised her chin to try and see more of this stranger but only saw his lips from a distance but what really caught her attention was the husky voice he let out. There was some strange attractiveness in it.
"Yeah, it is. Come on it," she sighed as she put a glass on the bar table. "What can I get you? Whiskey? Scotch on the rocks? You look like you've had a tough night."
He nodded as he finally took his hand away from his eyes and she had to hold onto the counter from keeping herself up right.
He had the most intoxicating eyes she had ever seen. They were mainly brown but she saw flecks of gold in them and when she put together his eyes and his mouth he was a flawless person. He looked like an angel (Yes he was a bit unkempt but still an angel) as he walked towards her and collapsed on the bar stool across her.
He put his head in his hands and sat there.
"Excuse me?" her voice whispered. She didn't know why but having him so close and feeling his body heat frightened her down to her core.
"Don't worry—I'm still alive," he replied sarcastically.
She narrowed her eyebrows at his head and turned the other way. If he doesn't even want to have a drink I should kick him out. I do reserve the right for refusing service...
"I'll take a beach? Or was it called on the rocks? Kya tha?" She saw him finally look up and dig into his pocket.
Did he actually write the name of his drink down? She tried hard to press her lips into a line to keep from laughing.
"Some help please?" He finally asked her.
"Want a menu?" She asked.
"That would be greatly appreciated," He replied back sarcastically.
"Hey," She frowned. "No need to be so feisty," She handed him a laminated menu card.
He rolled his eyes as he took the menu card from her. She saw his expression change from an annoyed one to a very amused one. "Do people actually order these drinks? Pink Lady? Witch's Brew? The Green Fairy? Fairy from Hell?"
She rolled her eyes in response as she leaned her elbows on the counter. "Most people who come in here just get a beer but since it is around 3:30 in the morning, we're out of that."
"You're a bar that's open 24 hours but you're actually out of something?" He smirked, clearly amused at having her in a tight situation.
"I—uhh called my manager for more." She straightened up and cleaned some glasses. "So what can I get you?"
He sighed. "Is there any way I can order something that's non alcoholic?"
She smiled. He was turning out to be more her kinda guy, "Coffee?"
"Can you do cold coffee?" He had a small smile on his face that nearly caused her knees to give out.
How could one person be so adorable one second and so annoying in the next? She shook her head as she turned around.
"Something amusing?" He asked as she pulled out a blender.
She shrugged as she poured in some ice. "I was just thinking what a person like you—who doesn't even know how to order a drink is sitting here in a bar like this?"
He smiled and she could tell there was something he was hiding. Something painful she presumed.
"I was thinking the same thing about you actually," He grinned. "You seem like a pretty nice girl, from a good family; why are you working in a bar like this?"
"I asked first,"
"Yes well my answer's complicated—I rather hear yours." He gave her a small wink as she poured in some instant coffee.
"My uncle owns this place and he's out of town for two weeks so he needed someone to help and my older brother already has a good job so the responsibility came to me," She shrugged as she hit the 'ice crush' key on the blender.
He smiled and looked at her thoughtfully as if he was figuring her out and that thought made her nervous. Why did she care if some unknown (very) mysterious guy was trying to figure her out? She'd never see him again after tonight.
She turned off the blender and turned back to him. "Here you go," She smiled as she poured out the slushy coffee into a margarita glass. "Not exactly a margarita but way better in my opinion."
"I'm with you on that," He smiled as they both clinked glasses.
She was surprised that she had let herself get so comfortable with this stranger. She didn't know a single thing about him except that he didn't like alcohol and that he had a bad night. Other than that, they didn't even know each other's names.
"So what's your story?" She raised her eyebrows while taking other sip.
"My story?"
"What are you doing here?" she asked again.
"Oh right!" He swigged a bit of his cold coffee too fast. "Brain Freeze,"
She giggled as his thumb and index finger went up to his nose and he closed his eyes trying to shake it off.
"I just found out that my little sister's getting a divorce,"
She didn't know what to say. She never knew anyone who had to go through something like that. And personally she didn't believe in it. For her love and marriage were something meant to last a lifetime. Hearing about stories like this always saddened her.
"I'm sorry," She whispered.
He looked up into her big brown eyes and smiled. "It's not your fault,"
"I know," she shrugged. "But I guess I'm just sorry for what you're going through; I think more than the people involved, it hurts the people surrounding a divorce."
He nodded then and she felt helpless. She didn't know this 'ajnabee' yet her heart wanted to reach out and comfort him.
"I guess for me—marriage is something that should always last forever." She admitted.
He looked up at her and smiled.
"What?" she asked, self consciously smoothing down her hair.
He shook his head. "That's what I used to think until tonight,"
"You should change what you think based on what happened," she took off her apron to reveal her v-necked white t-shirt and skinny jeans and walked over to him. "Listen, I know I don't know your name or—"
"Preet. Preet Juneja," He interrupted her.
"Nonee," She smiled back. "Anyways, as I was saying. I know we don't know each other—"
"Don't we?" he interrupted her again.
"Are you going to keep doing that?" she put her hand on her hip.
Preet shrugged. "It's kinda fun actually," He took another sip of his cold coffee.
Nonee rolled her eyes and smiled. "Fine. All I want to say is I think you need a friend and so if you want to talk, I'm here."
With that she turned to leave, but Preet's arm stopped her. "Wait Nonee,"
She turned back slowly. "Yeah?"
"Thanks,"
"For what?" she asked.
"Everything. I'm glad I came here instead of going to some McDonalds or something. You've been real nice to me and everything."
Nonee smiled. "Don't worry about it. I'm happy I helped,"
"You really did," He grinned until his cell phone rang. "Hello?"
Nonee couldn't help but feel her heart sink. Was this going to just be another one time encounter? She couldn't help but wish there was more to this special stranger. He seemed so genuine and she had never really opened up to anyone like she had with him.
She watched him run his hand through his hair while he talked on the phone and just leaned on the counter smiling at him. He seemed to earnest with everything he did and best part of all; he didn't have a clue about hard liquor, she smiled to herself as he hit the end button on his phone.
"Sorry about that," He sighed as he put his phone back in his pocket.
"Something urgent?" She asked.
Preet nodded. "I've got to go to Veera's house. My sister," He explained. "Nihaal, her husband wants to forget about the divorce,"
"That's great news then!" Nonee said happily. I just wish this night could go on forever,
Preet smiled and put his hand on top of hers at the counter and squeezed it. "I have you to thank. Your faith for this really helped me,"
Nonee shook her head. "Don't thank me. You should go,"
Preet's smile faded as he nodded and walked towards the door.
Nonee watched him leave and couldn't help but wonder if he'd ever step foot through those doors again. She kept her eyes back down not wanting to watch him disappear.
"Hey Nonee,"
She looked up and saw him smiling at her. "Yeah?"
"I'll see you tomorrow—same time?" He smirked.
Nonee smiled and nodded. "I'd love that,"
He nodded as he gave her a 'mock' salute before heading back out into the crisp night air.
Nonee couldn't believe her night. First she was horribly tired and then frightened and then amused, annoyed, and now she was what? In 'like' with someone she met at a bar at 3:30 am? She loved the mysteries of life. And love.
