But It All Worked Out In The End.
When I Watched You Walk Away,
Well I Never Thought I'd Say,
I'm Fine,
Without You.
Three years ago, Preet had made the biggest mistake in his life. He had let Meher go. He had let the woman he loved most in the world go. And instead, he had listened to his Bauji, and had agreed to marry Ashlesha.
He had tried to keep Ashlesha happy, it would not be fair to her otherwise, but he knew, as did Ashlesha, that he still loved Meher. He loved Ash, in his own way, but Meher held his heart.
It would not be fair to either girl for him to make any comment tonight, not when Ashlesha was so thrilled for the woman she regarded as a younger sister. Not when Meher's face was alight with happiness. He never imagined it, never considered it.
But she had moved on.
When she had walked out of his room on his wedding day, Meher had closed that chapter of her life. She had known then, that she could not live in the past. She loved Preet, a part of her always would. It was, after all, impossible to forget your first love. But she had not allowed her life to come to a standstill. She deserved better than someone who would write her off so easily.
Finishing college easily, with honours, had brought much joy to the household, and it had been with great joy that the family had allowed her to go overseas for an internship. It had been a great opportunity. And there, she had run into an old friend of Heer Didi's. Rajveer had never treated her differently than how he had treated Didi, they had been friends as well. But meeting him again, things had changed. They were both older, wiser, and both had been hurt by love.
Preet watched as Raj pulled Meher close. She looked up at him with a huge grin on her face. He raised her left hand to his lips, a slight smirk playing on his lips. He winked at her, and Preet could see the blush that stained her cheeks, and the ring that shone on the ring finger of her hand
He still had a hard time believing it. She had fallen out of love with him, and in love with someone else.
And You Said That You Were So Much Better.
We Have Done A Lot Of Growing Up,
We Were Never Meant To Be Together.
They had become close, while they had worked together. And soon, Raj had known everything about her. She had no qualms with breaking down in his arms, and he knew about how betrayed she had felt when Preet had agreed to marry Ashlesha. He had told her about how his engagement with Priya, a girl he had fallen in love with in college, had broken when she had callously told him that she had been cheating on him for a long time. They had both helped one another heal from their heartbreaks.
And in doing so, had created space for one another in each other's hearts.
The wedding was just a few days away, neither Meher nor Raj wanted a long engagement. The family had been more than happy to acquiesce. The engagement party had been thrown by Maya, who had been thrilled that her best friend had found someone who thought the world of her. Preet had hurt, but seeing the obvious happiness on her face, he could not help but feel relief as well. He had hurt her, had broken her. If she had been miserable all her life, he never would have forgiven himself.
Never mind that she would be happy with someone else. She would be happy. That was all that mattered.
Meher had never thought it would be possible to fall in love again, not after Preet. She never thought she would trust someone enough to give them her heart. But Raj was different. Raj was her best friend first, and lover second. He would do little things that would make her heart warm. Small gestures and words were all that were needed for them to converse. They were so in tune with one another. And they had both been burned before.
They made sense, and she was happy. Happier than she had ever thought possible.
Raj had picked up the pieces of the heart Preet had broken and put them back together. Preet was content with Ash, content with the knowledge that Meher was happy too. They were both okay without one another, a fact neither had thought was possible.
Time does indeed heal all wounds.
But It All Worked Out In The End.
When I Watched You Walk Away,
Well I Never Thought I'd Say,
I'm Fine,
Without You.
Do let me know what you think!
Love,
Radz
