Preet turned around after hearing Meher's words. Opening his eyes he grimaced in pain. It hurt him that he was hurting her but he didn't know what to do. The recent days had been hard for him having to constantly avoid Meher and her questions. Knowing that his coldness was paining Meher had filled him with much guilt. As she lay beside him he could feel her emotions running wild and felt helpless not knowing what to do. His mind filled with so many questions which he could not begin to answer. How could explain things to Meher when he himself did not understand what was going on.
It was the other day at the office which sparked off this madness. Harman had entered Preet's cabin asking about details on a particular project which Preet was handling. They spent a whole hour discussing the project with Preet getting advice from his more experienced brother. Harman felt that Preet did not need his help as he was full of ideas. Harman noticed the change in his brother from this workshy boy to such a hardworking man all which resulted from his marriage where he had to stepped up to his responsibilities as a son and husband. With the support of Meher he had matured and she cared for him dearly.
Deciding to leave Harman approaching the door he turned and made an elusive statement. You are very lucky Preet. Harman twisted back to leave but Preet stopped him to enquire what he meant. Harman than took a seat opposite Preet and explained. You have such a caring wife who takes care of your every need. Meher was destined for you and no one else. When you two are together you look perfect and without each other you are incomplete. I mean you two do fight all the time but in your fights you show your love. You and Meher married not under normal circumstances and I know it was because of me but maybe that was the way it was meant to be. Can you imagine life without Meher as your wife? You can't can you because you love her. Take of care of her as much as she does for you. Most importantly don't take her for granted and make sure she knows you don't. Realising that he had spent so long talking to Preet, Harman hurried along. Harman was facing some hardships in his marital life and looking at his brother's marital bliss made him slightly envious.
Reflecting on Harman's words at first made Preet chuckle, me and Meher are only friends what does Harman know. However looking deeper Preet questioned himself, what would my life be like without Meher as my wife? Well they'd still be friends but he'd have grown closer to her than a friend. If it weren't for Meher there were so many things that would have not been possible. His feelings for Meher had transcended beyond friendship and that was a fact he had known for quite a while however this stage beyond friendship he had labelled marriage. Marriage he thought but what is marriage? To Preet marriage was a sacred bond that was for life, something that tied his life with Meher's where their joys and sadness were one. Being able to be free, open and honest about his feelings was marriage, where he could depend on Meher to listen to him without objection or judgment. He could rely on her to deliver wise advice which he always found to be right. Marriage was knowing that he had someone waiting for him at home and someone who cared deeply about his happiness. Meher drove him crazy with her childish exuberance yet this was his adored most about her. The comfort level they shared and the wonderful moments they cherished he held dear. Maybe it's true but...Preet tried to make sense of the thoughts running wild through his mind. Have I really fallen for Meher...I know we are more than friends so... Preet then was occupied by these thoughts for the coming days. It was a riddle that he could not decipher, did he love Meher or not?
Meher as usual awoke first and headed to the shower. With the cool droplets of water she tried to ease her tension away but failed. Until she found out the truth she could not be at peace. Over the months of her marriage to Preet she had fulfilled her role as his wife not out of obligation but out of affection. In her eyes their relationship had moved past friendship into something more. Though words had not expressed anything she hoped that the moments they shared said more than words could. The past days seeing Preet's distance she realised just how important he was to her life and questioned if he felt as strongly.
Wake up...Preet wake up... Meher gently shook Preet trying her best to wake him. Preet wake up or you'll be late again... She continued to nag but it had no affect on Preet who lay peacefully still. You've driven me crazy with your sleeping now wake up or I'll... Meher paused to think to what she could do next. Preet quickly grabbed onto Meher's hand before she could leave the bed scaring her. What are going to do? He said playfully while opening his eyes to see Meher. The face he woke to every morning so beautiful he thought it truly reflected her pure heart, her eyes so honest and till date never lied to him once. Looking deeper at her he noticed a hidden pain that she was trying to conceal and he knew that it was his fault. I'm sorry he said loosening his grip and holding Meher's hands in his. Breaking away from her gaze at Preet, Meher replied sweetly, for what? Preet propped himself up on the bed but still held onto Meher's hands. For the last couple of days, I know have been so off with you and I'm sorry. It's no excuse but there have just been a few things on my mind... Meher looked at her husband and was glad that he was aware of his actions but was more concerned by the reasons behind them. There is no need for your sorry because nothing you have done has really offended me. The only thing that hurts is that you unable to share your problems with me. Tell me what's wrong and I'll be here to help you... Preet wanted to tell her but before he could say anything he needed to work out his issues or it would cause unnecessary bother. You're the one person I can share my problems with openly about anything and that's not going to change. However I can only tell you what's going on when the time is right. Do you trust me? Meher nodded her head in strong agreement. Then I will tell you everything soon I promise. Saying so Preet headed off to the shower feeling a little relived that he had at least spoke to Meher and rested her mind a little.
Meher spent next couple of days in haze though she had full faith in Preet's words but it still left her wondering what it was that was eating away at Preet. One day finishing her chores Meher sat down with Heer and they talked about the latest on goings of the house. Meher are things between you and Preet okay? Heer asked finally after wanting to ask for days but not finding the right moment. Yes di why? Meher asked trying to shrug off Heer's concerns. It's just that both you and Preet haven't been your normal selves. I mean Preet not teasing Bauji is a rare event but the last week not once has he done anything. Not being able to keep her guard up Meher decided to confide in her sister but only telling her partially what was wrong. Di, it just that Preet's worried about something, I think it's something to do with work and I'm sure it's not anything that serious. But I'm worried about him, he's so unlike the Preet we know so quiet and serious. Heer could tell how worried Meher was from her tone. Lifting Meher's face Heer looked at her sister with joy Meher you love Preet a lot don't you? I am so happy that you both are happy together. Just looking into eyes I can see the love you have for Preet seeping through. Now smile and I'm sure Preet will be back to his old tricks very soon.
Meher walked back to her room with Heer's words whizzing in her mind. It was true she loved Preet dearly more than she thought possible and it was a feeling she tried to fight once. She then questioned to why she fought it, she worried whether the revealing of this truth to Preet would change their relationship. They had never sat down and seriously spoken about the progression of their relationship but both knew that had left their past lives behind and had accepted each other as a married couple. However they never defined 'a married couple'; friendship, companionship or love? Meher had grown to love Preet and saw him in many different lights. They started off as friends before marriage which grew stronger afterwards. The friendship was all about laughing, support and trust which brought them closer. She discovered that behind that ever-smiling face was such a gentle, loving and passionate soul. In times of hardship he fought so hard for his family and that dedication drove him to success. He wasn't the most confident man and he didn't find it easy when he had to shoulder responsibilities but he overcame all the challenges. He longed for his father to be proud him, to prove himself capable and he did. Just seeing him do all these things Meher felt herself being closer to this man that was her husband and her respect for him heightened. However along with his passion it was Preet's unique ability to spread joy that charmed her. When times were tough he knew exactly what to do to make her smile and feel comforted at the same time. Every day he made her smile and laugh with his never ending jokes and pranks. However the past week had just shown her how much she cherished her relationship with Preet as now it seemed non-existent. They shared the same room but it was filled with an uneasy silence, there were polite gestures which seemed so unnatural and that smile locked away somewhere far.
Different reasons for his behaviour Meher had thought about yet there was nothing that could tell her what was exactly wrong. She had noticed that most of his silence and distance was directed at her so some way his problem was related to her. Was he unhappy with her? What had she done wrong? She traced back to the day when it all started and the only link she could find was Ash. It was the very next day after Ash returned that Preet's behaviour suddenly changed. She trusted Preet completely, he had moved away from his past but had Ash's reappearance brought some feelings in Preet. Meher didn't know whether Preet loved her the way she loved him but hoped the love she felt through his actions was true. However she wondered whether Preet moved away from his past but still harboured feelings for Ash after all she was his first love. Meher had disregarded everything she felt for Harman as it didn't have any magnitude compared to the way she felt about Preet. Harman was her brother-in-law what happened between them had hurt her for some while but Preet never let the hurt scar instead he healed her heart. Now she shared a somewhat normal relationship with Harman because now she loved Preet and nothing else mattered.
Sitting in the office Preet felt useless as his mind was set on Meher not his work. Her eyes haunting him still. The most beautiful eyes he had seen and they were full of pain because of him. He hated seeing her so upset usually he would make her laugh with one of his lame jokes and then her special smile would light up her eyes but he was unable to do so. He was angry at himself that he let his own fears stop him from reaching out to Meher as she done nothing but support him. The distance in the last week had shown he how attached he was Meher. Spending time with her, talking and laughing, he had not realised how time flew by so happily when he was with her. Now with their awkward silences he missed her and wanted things back to normal. However first he needed to understand what normal was. He could not go on without being honest about his feelings. Their relationship was above friendship and a unique marriage. They were more best friends than anything else however there were feelings he felt for Meher above friendship. He couldn't deny his attraction towards Meher, her beauty did not just lie physically but also from within. She was a simple, sweet and loving women. Everything seemed so uncomplicated with her and he could read her like a book just the way she read him. There was this connection they shared on a deeper level where over time it had transformed into something more. Everything had fallen into place to effortlessly that he failed to recognise what had resulted.
Finally things were coming to light things that he had not acknowledged before. These feelings were deep rooted and he did not know since when. This attachment he felt for Meher was not just a husband's need of a wife but the need of love. It was true he had indeed fallen for her ages ago but it was only today he realised. I love Meher!
As Preet arrived from work Meher noticed a change in him but couldn't place what it was. As she approached him to exchange his briefcase for a glass of water she noticed that he had become even more passive towards her. When she thought things were getting better they only looked to get worse. The rest of the evening flew by with the family where Preet was back to his usual self, full of cheer. Meher could not understand how he could be normal with the rest of the family yet not even manage to give her a little smile. Meher's sadness hadn't gone unnoticed by Preet and he silently apologised but it was only a matter of time before everything would be perfect.
Finishing up her chores Meher was able to go to the comfort of her room only to realise that there was only awkwardness awaiting her. Preet was sitting on the bed typing away on the laptop and did not even acknowledge Meher's arrival. Feeling frustrated Meher walked over to Preet and sat beside him waiting for him to look at her. However Preet did no such thing but carried on typing so Meher called out his name to which he grumbled a response without eye contact. Preet I need to talk to about something important. Meher tried to stress the importance yet it had not affect as Preet replied, tell me... His eyes not once leaving the laptop screen. Preet! Meher spoke but this time it wasn't a request but a command and Preet closed the laptop to face her. I'm sorry, I know it's all my fault... Meher said as she looked at Preet with remorse. What's all your fault? Preet replied not knowing what she was apologising for. The last week, I know I have done something wrong that's why you have been so troubled. I don't know exactly it is that I've done but I'm sorry. Once again Meher's face was covered with a look of guilt. What makes you think it's something you've done? Preet asked. I am the one you've been avoiding and in the last week not once have you called me moti. They both chucked however Meher's tears gave way. Preet immediately wiped away Meher's tears and while cupping her face her reassured her, you have done nothing at all so why are you saying sorry huh? If anyone is at fault it is me but it's nearly sorted out now.
Moving her face from Preet's hand Meher asked, tell me what's wrong or what's happened. I hate not knowing what it is that has been bothering you. Usually I can guess your problems but this whole last week I don't have a clue what's going on. Don't you trust me anymore? Meher had enough of not knowing and being patient. Of course I trust you more than I trust myself. It's just it was complicated. Preet assured her. If it was I would have helped you. Meher couldn't understand why Preet couldn't confide in her like he usually did. But this was something I needed to work out myself. Preet didn't want to give anything away but this is just annoyed Meher. So you don't need me anymore, she concluded and folded her arms in dismay. No it's not like that, Preet was secretly enjoying Meher's irritation. Then tell me, this was Meher final demand. Fine but first let me say I am sorry for causing you so much pain and for being so stupid. Meher did not fully understand what Preet meant but he was finally revealing the truth.
Meher looked at Preet confused but he assured her with his eyes. Preet then slowly led Meher to the terrace before he opened the door he asked her to shut her eyes. Meher at first was reluctant but when Preet asked if she trusted him she immediately consented. Sitting Meher on the swing Preet sat beside her and told her to open her eyes. Looking around her eyes could not process what lay before her. She scanned the terrace again which was beautifully lit up by many candles then she turned to Preet who sat smiling.
Preet? What is all this? I mean...Meher stammered but before she could go on Preet put his finger on her lips to quieten her. Meher you talk a lot now let me speak or else I won't tell you anything Preet told Meher who he knew would ask a thousand questions once he started talking and her questions would never cease. Meher was about to open her mouth to reply but seeing Preet raised eyebrows she nodded her head in agreement instead.
This all started because of that stupid Harman who came and told me I was lucky to have a wife like. Preet said it like he didn't agree with Harman and realised his mistake looking at Meher's dropping smile. Preet carried on while reaching out and holding onto Meher's hand. What he said was perfectly correct. After all you do so much for me and well without you I would be lost. To which Meher smiled. However he also said something else too, something that I had never considered before. What he said left me quite confused and because of that I became lost in my own little world that I ignored everyone. It baffled me to why his words were killing and it made me questions things that I had never acknowledged. This all had to do with me, you and our marriage that's way I distanced myself from you. I needed that space not because you were at fault but I didn't want to hurt you but I still managed to do exactly that. Looking up at Meher, Preet could see a confused expression on her face and a million questions in her eyes. Gesturing with his face Preet allowed Meher to speak before she burst. Preet I don't understand what you are trying to say. What was it that Harmanji said or what he made you question?
Looking straight into Meher's eyes Preet replied, it made me question what you are to me? Not understanding what Preet meant exactly Meher answered simply, your wife. Preet smiled at his wife's innocence. I know that but how I felt about you. The importance you have in my life and its reason. Meher eagerly wanted to know his answer and nudged him to continue. And...
I was stupid that it took me a whole week to work out what was right in front of me and to cause you so much hurt unnecessarily. Standing up Preet walked over to the side of the terrace and Meher followed closely behind. Our marriage it didn't take place in the normal circumstances and we didn't love each other but it happened. The day we married you forgot about Harman and I forgot about Ashleesha. It was hard for both of us but it was our friendship that got us through. After we married nothing was easy but on every step of the way you supported me. It was you who gave me the belief in myself and it was you who helped me throughout. Without you things I have done wouldn't have been possible and I don't know when your support became my strength but I know that with you by side anything is possible. Meher I have never told you before how much you mean to me because it was not until today I realised. Meher I love you... Not hearing a reply Preet turned around to find Meher frozen. Meher...Preet called out and Meher just burst into a fit of tears. Embracing in her tight embrace Preet asked her what was wrong and muffled under the sobs Preet could just make out Meher's reply I love you too Preet...With a smile on his face Preet broke away from the hug to look and Meher. Why are you crying? Is being in love with me such a tragic thing? Now stop crying and give me that beautiful smile of yours. Meher gave a weak smile but Preet was disappointed. Not this smile, a big smile that kills me every time I see it. Meher's smile grew into a full one to which Preet was content. You know when you smile you look so beautiful but when you cry you look so moti. Preet laughed. Preet! Meher playfully hit Preet while he encased his arms around her once more in which she surrendered into.
