Part 3(i)

this part is dedicated to all my readers and the warm people on this forum who have been so nice to me😳

Milind hadn't been able to concentrate on his work that evening. All he could think of was Prachi. All he wanted to do was stare at her, watch her, listen to her voice; it was as if he had been mesmerized. But he did not have the courage in him to do so blatantly. He had been shattered before, the pain had been too much to bear then. He had loved the other girl, promised her everything she had wanted but she had dreamed and wanted far bigger than him. After all what had he been then, he had just bought his first hotel and spent all his savings to the last penny on it. She deserved better she had said, she had been so pretty after all, she could have anyone else someone richer, smarter, more handsome. And she didn't want to be a typical bahu to his Baba and typical wife to him. So she had gone, walked off just like that, told him he wasn't and would never be good enough for her. He had been broken then, he had thought she had loved him. How did he fall prey to her charm? It had all been deceit!

A knock on the door brought him out of his thoughts. "Beta should I bring you your food, Prachi beta is busy with Ritwick and Sukriti." No kaka, Prachi will bring it to me." he said. 'Beta, its karvachauth on Saturday, perhaps you should ask Mishraji to send sargi for prachi from Delhi.' Sargi kaka? ' he asked 'Yes, it is usually given by the elders to the young daughter-in-laws; and so ask your baba to send it. "she s going to fast for me." The thought overwhelmed him. She needed a new sari, and mehndi, and red bangles, and jewellery. He would get her all this. It was her first karvachauth, and it was all for him. His eyes started to sting at the thought, he had always felt uncared for and alone and now here she was. But a sudden fear gripped him, what if she didn't fast. What if she thought not to since her perception was that he never cared for her. What if she didn't care for him.

He walked outside his study and saw her trying to feed Ritwick. "eat baby" she said to him but the little boy wouldn't budge. With a laugh she turned to him, "Look Milind he won't eat, you try feeding him". But Milind stood rooted to the ground, gazing at her transfixed. Something told him, she would fast for him, and wait for him, and be there for ever. Prachi had noticed this, she saw a smile tug at the corners of his mouth at the scene between her and Ritwick but it had disappeared as fast as it had come. She smiled at him and he still just continued to look. 'Milind, come eat, if you wait it may take ages seeing that I have to feed ritwick and Sukriti. 'Kaka will feed Sukriti; 'Kaka please take Sukriti some dinner and make sure she eats it all; Sukriti must get tired of seeing just you and me all the time. Maybe kaka will be a change'. What stupid things am I saying?, he thought and then as she got up to leave with the toddler, he whispered; 'Will you stay and eat with me?' and from the tone of his voice she found it hard to say no.

'At least, she will eat too.' Milind thought. Just then, as he walked towards the table with her the house phone rang. Prachi ran to get it handing Ritwick to Milind. 'Hello', she answered. "Mrs. M, this is Mr. Shah. I have some news for you. The other company bid 600 million to our 525 and they are Shergill Group'. She stood rooted to the spot, her expression disturbed and slowly Milind saw her face change color from its usual pink to white. What's wrong with her, he thought and just as he was going to ask her she said, 'Milind I have to take care of something. I'll be back soon. Feed Ritwick if he eats and put him to bed. See you later.' And as walked out with her car keys, Milind felt a sad remorse. Why, why, why? Why had he asked her to eat with him? She didn't care.' Little did he know that he was all she cared about, he was her world and she was going to do all she could to save him from Neev's jealous outrage.
