Rima, no, intriguing does not mean bad in the english dictionary nor in mine (no euphemism dear). I really like this story and it is very interesting. I think you did not read my edited post which made it clear that I too presumed that Shreya was Suki's niece. I know Prachi's hubby did not run away with Milsi's wife. That was just to pull your leg. I am guessing that Milsi's wife died and Prachi too appears to have lost her husband. I think she is not yet aware that he is dead. He my have met with an accident or something.

Rima hun this is so interesting intriguing as Opti rightly put it would be much better. It's confusing to some extent but I believe as time passes the characters will unravel themselves. I bet we're in for a very dramatic read this time. 😊

PART 4

When Milind returned home with Shreya that evening Sukriti was there waiting for them. Shreya walked in slowly behind Milind's long stride, he seemed as though he had forgotten she was there. The school had called her house after Shreya had been waiting for an hour without anyone coming to pick her up. She was not home however but when she did get there, she was given the message. She called the school immediately but was told that Prachi Shah had taken the child with her. Sukriti could only breath a sigh of relief for a moment before she called Prachi from the house phone.

Her phone battery had died and she couldn't believe that today of all days this had happened. Prachi had told Sukriti that her husband had taken Shreya from her and Sukriti's brow furrowed in confusion. She had just been with Saket just moments ago but realisation soon dawned on her that Prachi was talking about Milind. She said she would explain it to Prachi tomorrow and thanked her, putting the phone down.

It did not take long for Sukriti to storm down to Milind's house as it was mere minutes away and to her surprise, she was still there before them, how long exactly had Shreya waited? Milind had invited Saket and Sukriti many times to stay with him but he knew that Saket did not want to leave his family home and he did not want Sukriti to have to choose. He decided to buy a house close to them, so they were always near.

Milind could see straight away that Sukriti was angry but it was not his fault that his meeting had ran late. She didn't say anything however and silently picked Shreya up, taking her to her room. Once she had Shreya changed and calmed, she ordered the servants to make sure they had her food ready, she would come up to feed her soon. When she had returned downstairs, Milind was waiting in his study for the lecture he knew was coming. Sukriti opened the door quietly and closed it behind her without making a noise, she was nothing if not discreet, even in front of the servants.

She stood in front of his desk just staring at him while he swivelled slowly around to meet her gaze. She still didn't speak and so Milind decided he should apologise, "Dekh Sukriti, galti ho gayi...Meeting itni der chali...tum jaanti ho na yeh Dubai wala contract hamare liya kitna important hain..."

"Apni beti se bhi zyada?" Sukriti asked, her voice was not raised nor was it cutting; Milind could only hear disappointment and he hated that he had bought that out in her. "Bhaiya...maine tou nahi kaha tha aapse aisa karne ke liye...aapne khud mujse kaha ke aap Shreya ko lene jaaenge...phir kyun bhaiya?"

"Sukriti maine kaha na tumse woh meeting..." He stood up now and walked to her.

"Bhaiya...meeting to har roz hoti hain..." She spoke more firmly now, "Jab apne kal mujse Shreya ke bare mein baat ki...tou maine socha ke shayad aap us ke saat waqt bitana chahate hain...usse jaana chahate hain...leking kitni galat thi main..."

Milind could not speak, he had no justification for being late today. In fact if he had wanted, he could have left that meeting early but the problem was, he didn't want to. When he had resolved to help Sukriti and regain control of his life, he did not think it would be so hard. He had decided to pick up Shreya for the first time, something he knew would be the hardest. For four years now, he had avoided just that; he could barely look at the child let alone spend time with her. He knew he was being unfair and unjust to the innocent girl but he could not help but hold her responsible for what had happened to his wife though he knew deep down he was only looking for someone to blame.

"Agar aap ko nahin jaana tha tou aapne muje ya Saket ko phone kyun nahin kiya? Aap kisi aur ko bhi bhej sakte thain..."

"Sukriti main jaanta tha ke tum dono ashram gaye hue ho...main pereshaan nahin karna chahata..."

"Bhaiya...aap kab samjenge...Shreya hamare liye pereshaani nahin hain...hum ne aap se kaha bhi tha ke hum usse apne saat rakenge lekin aap hi ne mana kar diya tha..." Sukriti could not hide the tears forming in her eyes, her voice was thick but she continued regardless, "Bhaiya...aap usse saaza kyun de rahe hain...us ki kya galti hain? Aab kab tak us baat ko bhool nahin paaenge?"

He was guilty of that also, he did not know why he didn't want Shreya to leave the house when he acted so indifferently towards her. Sukriti had always assumed that it was because Shreya was the last reminder of his wife that Milind did not wish to let her go. Sukriti could not deny that she was far too attached to the child, but being the only mother figure in Shreya's life, she knew that was bound to happen and Sukriti knew that she had her selfish reasons also. Sukriti had named her, had done everything for her but she had tried to include Milind, it was not her fault if he did not seem to care. Sukriti does not even mind now when people mistake her Shreya's mother, she expects it and does not even bother to correct them. But Prachi was an exception, Sukriti knew she should have told her ages ago, but she had not expected that they would become friends.

Sukriti always left when Milind did not respond, she was used to this and was no longer surprised when he stoped listening. She wished for his sake that he got to know Shreya, the child was heaven sent; she was beautiful and well behaved. Sukriti did not know how Milind got so lucky with a child like her, they did not even have to try and she was perfect. It broke her heart everytime she would see Shreya strive for Milind's affections, even at four years old, she was a mature child and Milind would just remain oblivious to it all.

Once Sukriti had let, Milind let his mind wonder back to his wife, even after these fours years he thought of her with much fondness. The pain was less but it was still there nonetheless. She had been beautiful, his constant companion and saviour. Milind was not naive enough to think she would be with him forever, but he did not think life was so cruel as to snatch her from him this soon. He sat at his desk in his office and leaned back in his chair; deep in thought. He did not like to think of it often but today he could not help it, being with Shreya alone for such a period of time bought back memories he tired hard to bury.

Milind thought back to the time he had first seen her, he had returned from Turkey, having made something of himself and she was the only girl in the chawl that did not seemed fazed by him. He hadn't seen her before, he was sure, but she was mesmerising. She was shy and reserved and lived a quite life with her parents who had died before Milind's return. Milind did not know when he fell in love with her, they had talked a few times but he had heard much about her and he grew more and more interested in her. It was after Sukriti's wedding that he had taken the decision to marry her, she was perhaps just as surprised as he was but he had been so sincere, she could not doubt his affection and she had accepted eventually despite herself. It did not take them long to fall very much in love and she was pregnant within a year of their marriage.

He closed his eyes again and it does not take long for his mind to recollect that day from his memories. He remembers that day with such clarity as though it were yesterday. He had placed her in the backseat of the car in a hurry; her waters had broken just moments before and he wanted to get her to the hospital as soon as her could. She was in shock it was happening so quickly and she felt numb. She couldn't breath though and when the pain was unbearable she let out a cry. He drove as fast as he could possibly manage and could often hear her entreat him to go slower, lest somebody get hurt.

He had not left her side once they had reached the hospital and he kept her hand firmly enclosed in his as he tried to help her. She could not stand the agony any longer and could not help but scream, as her pain intensified, Milind swore that he did not want another child if it ment she would be in such pain. He thought he died a little each time he heard her scream and brushed his fevered lips to her forehead as she pushed the baby out and the doctor caught it in his arms. Milind did not think that anything could break his concentration from his wife but in the moment he saw the tiny pink bundle, his eyes pooled with unshed tears and he instantly reached for his daughter.

He turned to look at his wife and noticed the strange look about her; her eyes were vacant and glassed over and she was seizing. Milind felt someone push him out of the door but everything was becoming surreal. He closed his eyes for a moment as waves of nausea hit him and his head was spinning. The baby was in his arms and he looked down at it, even now he could see her curly hair and she had eyes that were bright and big like her mother's and even now he could see in her smile, the wife he was losing. Milind could not bear to hold her any longer and passed her to a nurse immediately.

He cornered a doctor coming out, "Kya Hua?!" he barked at the small man, even attemtpting to push past him back into the room. The doctor was either stronger than Milind imagined him to be or Milind had become weaker due to his shock that he could not get past the man.

The doctor remained calm, he knew this was bound to happen, "Mr Mishra, maine aap ki patni ko pehle hi bataya tha, yeh pregnancy bauhat high risk hain...lekin un ki zidh thi ke unhe yeh bacha khaiye..." The doctor paused as Milind digested the information he had just been given. He had not been aware that anything was wrong, she had always insisted that both she and the baby were fine and everything was normal. Milind cursed himself for not being at all the doctors appointments but he cursed her most of all for not telling him. He did not want any child if it meant losing her...

Milind stood rigid with rage, it was hard for him to fully form his words, the shock was physically painful and he thought he would be sick, "Mr Mishra, hum koshish kar rahe hain...lekin main aap ko abhi kuch nahin bata sakta..." the doctor spoke again and with that he went off to get whatever he had come out for.

She never woke up however and Milind was never the same. He remembered seeing her for the last time on that hospital bed, looking pale but peaceful. He did not cry, instead he sat by the bed for hours just holding her hand.
