PART - 18
Walking hurriedly inside the house she tripped in front of the pooja room; slowly righting herself she walked inside the room and looked at the beautiful idols of Krishna & Radha.
The pooja room was done entirely in wood and beautiful carvings were done in every nook and corner of the room. In the middle of the room, stood the statue of Krishna and Radha making the room feel so serene and peaceful. There were other idols that were placed in the room too. There was small idol of Ganesha and a slightly bigger one for Durga.
The room was tastefully decorated bringing out the piousness of the place. She kneeled down in front of the idols and delicately placed the flowers at the foot of each one of them.
Sitting down in front of them and closing her eyes a strange calmness took over her soul.
Holding her hands in front of her chest she prayed.
As she prayed the past slowly intruded on her thoughts and her time the first week after her return from Madras swam in front of her eyes.
-Past -
She could still remember and the heaviness she had felt when she had left him at the airport. Milind standing outside of the security gates, watching her leave with no emotion on his face except for his clenched fist held against the side of his body.
If she hadn't noticed his clenched fist she would not have realized he was missing her too. With tears in her eyes she had walked into the boarding area. She must not even have sat down on the seat before her mobile had started to ring.
She pulled her mobile from her bag and saw the caller id. It was Milind calling her. An automatic smile had crossed her face seeing the caller.
Pressing the talk key, "Milind" she said with a smile on her face.
"Prachi" he had said briskly
"Hmmm"
"I will call you once you reach Bombay. So, have your mobile with you at all times" he had talked to her in a no nonsense manner.
"O.k." she had replied quietly
"Do you have your entire luggage with you?" he had asked again trying to keep the conversation going.
"Yes" she had hiccupped not able to control herself.
"Prachi, why are you answering in single syllables?" He had sounded exasperated
"I am leaving and you are not even being nice to me. All you are talking about is whether my luggage is there with me or…not" as she finished tears started falling silently from her eyes.
"Prachi, I am not the kind of person who is going to advertise my love to you every time we talk. You should understand by now that I would not have made commitments about marrying you if I was not serious about our relationship" he had said with a bite to his tone.
"Milind…" she whispered
"Now, don't worry about anything, Prachi. I will see you in Bombay in a week…O.k.?" he said as he tried to placate her.
"O.k...!" he repeated a little bit louder not hearing a response from her.
"Hmmmm..." she said her voice not even rising a bit
"Prachi, I can't hear you…." He repeated as he tried to cheer her up. Probably, he had felt guilty for being a little harsh earlier with her.
"O.k.!" she said a little bit louder and small smile came on her lips thinking about him
"Now, that's my girl. Will call you soon and I will see you in a week" saying Milind had hung up soon after.
Prachi sat there at the airport waiting for the boarding call. Her heart was filled with Milind. And she thought all the precious time she had spent with him.
As though coming out of trance she had looked around and saw someone familiar walk towards the restroom at the corner of the departure lounge. There was something about the girl that looked so familiar that Prachi stood up to follow her.
The girl was dressed in a dark blue tops and white Capri pants. Her back was turned towards Prachi and she was hurrying towards the restroom as though she needed to use it immediately.
Prachi turned around and picked up her handbag and walked towards the restroom. She wanted to talk to the person who had just walked into the restroom; she really thought she knew the girl. Prachi pushed the restroom door open and stepped inside.
She saw the girl bending against the basin and washing her face. Her hair fell forward and hid her face from Prachi's view. She waited to see who it might be. Prachi felt as though she knew that person really well or at least she thought she might have met her before.
Prachi was about to touch the girl's shoulder when she felt her straighten up and push her hair backwards.
Prachi was shocked to see who it was. It was Ayesha, the girl who she had met at Hema's wedding. Ayesha did not like her.
What was she going to say to her when she realized it was Prachi who was standing close by?
Before Ayesha could turn around and look at Prachi, She had decided to make the first overture. Touching, Ayesha's shoulder she had said tentatively "Hi Ayesha. Remember me" Prachi had asked as she had tried to be nice to her.
"Oh! You! What are you doing here?" Ayesha had asked almost being nice to Prachi.
"I am flying back home to Bombay" she said in reply and asked her the same. After conversing for a few minutes Prachi had discovered that Ayesha was travelling on the same flight to Bombay.
"Are you visiting someone in Bombay?" Prachi had asked continuing the conversation.
"No, I live Bombay" she had replied as she walked towards the restroom door and opened it to get out.
"In Bombay??? Where in Bombay?" Prachi had asked again unable to control the uncharacteristic nature of her questions. She was usually quite, letting others do the talking while she listened with a smile. But, today she was really happy and it brought something uncharacteristic in her. She had wanted to initiate a conversation for the first time in her life.
"Andheri" she replied as she walked towards the seating area.
"I live in Juhu" saying Prachi had walked besides Ayesha.
"Oh…So, what does your father do?" Ayesha asked knowing that only the rich and the famous lived in Juhu.
"My dad owns Shah Industries" she said not elaborating on her father anymore. In some ways she was possessive about her father and did not like to share much information about him to anybody.
"Oh…Ok." Giving a non-committal answer Ayesha had sat down in a vacant seat as Prachi stood close by not knowing what to do. She did not want to overdo her welcome but on the other hand she wanted to talk to someone.
Ayesha looked at Prachi and the indecision in her face and had asked her join her in a nearby seat. They talked about inconsequential things for a few minutes and then Ayesha had grabbed a book from her bag and had started reading,
Thankfully, the boarding was announced and all of the passengers had boarded the flight one by one.
Once boarded Prachi had found out that she was in First Class and Ayesha was in the economy class. The flight was two and a half hours and Prachi didn't know what to do. But after a few minutes she had sat down comfortably and had slept through the entire flight with a smile on her face.
When the airhostess had announced that everyone needed to fasten their seatbelts and had slightly taped on prachi's shoulders she had woken up with a start. Totally coming awake from her sleep she realized that it was time land. Straightening herself she sat up and waited for the flight to land.
Once the flight had landed and the doors were disarmed Prachi got down and walked towards the terminal. She was picking up her bags from the carrousel when she noticed Ayesha picking up her bag too.
Prachi walked to Ayesha and tapped her on her shoulders.
"See you, Ayesha. It was nice meeting you" saying bye she was about to leave when she realized that they hadn't exchanged any information.
Turning back, she opened her bag and pulled out a paper and pen and wrote down her number. "Here" saying she handed over her number to Ayesha. "Call me, whenever you get a chance"
Ayesha was about to give her number too, but before she could write it down Prachi had seen her father waiting and she had rushed outside with her luggage forgetting Ayesha immediately as soon as she saw her father's face.
"Papa!" saying she went and gave a hug to her father.
"Have you been waiting for long" asking she hooked her hands with his as their driver picked up her luggage and they walked towards their car.
Sitting in the car, she pulled out her mobile and switched it on. She was talking to her father about the wedding when her mobile started to ring.
"Hello!" she said absently as she talked animatedly to her father.
"It's me!" said a now familiar voice which sent a thrill down her body.
"Hmmm!" she said not answering back.
"Did you reach safely?" Milind asked
"Yes!" she replied lowering her voice. She did not want her father to know about her relationship with Milind until Milind came to Bombay and talked to her father.
"Who is it beta?" her father had enquired as he turned in his seat and looked at her. Prachi was blushing but she managed to say "My friend"
"Is anybody with you?" Milind hesitated before asking from the other side of the phone.
"My Dad" hesitating for a second she continued on "We are going home right now. I will call you later" ending the call she had determinedly hung up the phone.
Her dad had dropped her at home and gone back to some business dinner he had to attend for the evening.
Walking into her room, she had removed her salwar and walked directly into the bathroom. She needed a shower after traveling the last couple of hours. She realized that she was falling asleep on her feet as she entered the cubicle.
Freshened from the shower and with a towel wrapped around her she was about to step out of the bathroom when she heard her mobile ringing.
Clutching the towel together she ran to the bed to pick up her mobile. Picking up, she said "Hi"
"Yes, I am home" she said before Milind could even ask the question.
"Are you missing me?" he asked which was so uncharacteristic of him.
"Yes…" she said softly.
"Me too…" saying he talked about what he had done after she had boarded the flight.
"So, what are you doing?" he asked wanting to know what she was doing.
"Oh! I just stepped out of the shower when the mobile rang" she had said blushing at the state of her undress.
"Hmmm!" he dragged with an exaggerated sig without saying anything at all. Just that "hmmmm!" was enough to make her blush even more.
Changing the topic, Prachi had asked him about his impending arrival in Bombay. She couldn't wait to see him again. "I miss you" she said as she tried to control the emotions that were overwhelming her. He promised her that he would be in Bombay on Sunday and that he would call her immediately after he landed.
After talking for a few more minutes, she was about to hang up when she heard him muttering something under his breath. "Did you say something?" she had questioned and he had said no. But when she had insisted and asked again he had confessed that he couldn't forget the image of her in a towel. Prachi had blushed and he had further added on that he would see her like that every day after they've gotten married.
"Milind!" she said blushing
Ending the call, Prachi had placed the phone on the night stand and walked towards her wardrobe. Pulling her favorite night dress from the closet with a huge Pooh bear on it she dressed and walked to the windows and stared out into the night. Thoughts of Milind and the anticipation of seeing him on Sunday had filled her heart.
Sighing to herself she had walked to the bed and was about to lie down when she there was knock on the door. She looked at the door as her mom had walked inside with a glass of milk.
"Ma, I am really tired. I just want to sleep" she said looking at her and not wanting to drink the milk
"Finish this milk and then you can go to sleep" saying she had placed the glass on the nightstand as she had stared at her daughter.
"O.k…" Agreeing reluctantly she had finished the glass and had almost immediately hit the pillows. She was bone tired and very sleepy as she hadn't gotten much sleep the previous night.
It was only 7.00 but she couldn't stop her eyes from closing as she went into a deep sleep.
Her mother had quietly pulled the blanket over her and had quietly closed the door letting her daughter sleep peacefully.
It was around Mid-night and Prachi heard the distant ringing of her mobile. With her eyes closed she looked for her phone with her hands and finally found it on the night stand. Still half – asleep she picked up the phone and said "Hello"
First she couldn't understand what was going on, all she could hear was someone weeping in the background. Wiping the sleep away from her eyes she again said "Hello" as she sat up in bed.
"Hello, who is it?" she asked again.
"I am pregnant" the voice hiccupped and she stared at the phone not understanding who the caller was.
"Who is it?" she asked again.
"Prachi…." Again she heard the weeping as the person on the other side of the call tried valiantly to control the tears.
"Yes!" she said hesitantly not knowing who it was.
"Prachi…It's me…It's me…Ayeesha" she said as Prachi sat in shocked, stunned silence.
