Kash- all I have to say after this update is that I could die to be with someone like this Milind... He is too good for words! His sense of responsibility, self esteem, dignity, maturity- OMG, it just blew me off! He's seriosuly a dynamite! I can't wait to read what happens between the two of them after they get married...!
Guys... I have decided to add a new character. All will come clearer as the story unfolds.
It was done! She had married Milind Mishra. Prachi leaned her head back against the soft leather headrest in the car and closed her eyes. She had never felt so drained in her whole life. Although Milind might have saved her from being labeled a jilted bride, she still felt used and rejected and nothing could ease the terrible sense of loss and inadequacy she was suffering right now. Milind sat next to her, grim-faced and withdrawn now the worst of it was over. He had been very clever, very alert all the way through the ordeal. He had not allowed her to be spoken to alone.
She could still remember the shocked look on Jaya's face as she had come downstairs with Milind holding her hand. Jaya was her best friend and also worked at the Mishra Corporation so she had recognized Milind instantly. Her jaw had literally dropped and she stood there gasping for breath looking like she was going to have a fit until they had reached the bottom of the stairs. She had rushed to her side and hissed at her 'What the hell in going on?' Milind had heard her and simply looked at her dismissingly and said tersely 'talk to Prachi's aunt' and with that he had swept Prachi past Jaya and led her to the mandap. While she was sitting in the mandap she had seen her friend and her aunt whispering and waving their arms while they were talking and it was clear that Jaya had not been very happy with what was going on.
After the ceremony, Jaya had tried several times to talk to Prachi but Milind had made sure that she did not get too close to her to ask any probing questions. Nor had he allowed her aunt or uncle to question her on any of his tersely delivered statements. He had told them that everything had been done for the best and that he took his responsibilities very seriously. He would to bring her back briefly to the Shah house late the next afternoon for the 'Pag Phere' ceremony. They would only be staying for a few minutes because they had to go to the airport straight from the Shah house as they were leaving the country to go on a long honeymoon until all the fuss had died down. And, oddly, her uncle had seemed to respect the way Milind had been determined to protect her.
The car drew to a halt, and she opened her eyes to find herself staring at the Mishras' elegant home, set in its own grounds in a prestigious part of Mumbai. Milind climbed out of the car and walked around it to open her door and help her out, leading her slowly and in silence to the front door, which was already open. His aunt and other relatives were at the door waiting to perform the necessary rituals and traditional welcome for the bride. Milind's second in command Ali had been there throughout the wedding and he had phoned ahead to make his relatives aware of the change in circumstances so they were not surprised to see Milind with Prachi instead of Neev. After the appropriate ceremonies had been completed, Milind looked at Prachi and saw her dazed expression and her eyes had started to glaze over again. His aunt was standing next to him so he bent down and whispered in her ear that Prachi didn't look too well and he was going to take her upstairs to rest as it had been quite an ordeal for her. As his aunt nodded in agreement , he took Prachi's hand and began leading her up the stairs and along the upper landing into a room that could only be his own private suite.
Opening the door, he guided her to a chair that was placed in a seating arrangement in the middle of the room and said 'Sit down. I won't be long. I just want to change out of these clothes.'
He then disappeared through another door, leaving her staring numbly at the chair. Her mind had gone blank and reaction was setting in. She couldn't remember how to make her limbs work. Her head was throbbing, her stomach queasy and her eyes were burning hot and dry.
Milind came back a little while later and came to an abrupt halt when he saw her still standing next to the chair. He stood there for a couple of seconds and studied her through narrowed, faintly worried eyes.
'Prachi.' He said her name carefully.
She didn't look at him, couldn't. She heard him, but couldn't seem to respond. Milind came over to her and reached out and grasped her chin, lifting her face so he could study it. She saw him frown, saw the eyes darken in concern.
'Are you going to faint, by any chance?' he asked slowly.
Yes, she thought, I think perhaps I am. And she closed her eyes at the exact same moment that she swayed towards him. He caught her, muttering and cursing as he lifted her into his arms, and she found herself being carried by him through to the next room and over to a huge emperor-sized bed, where he laid her down before disappearing into what could only be the bathroom, judging by the sound of water running.
He came back with a glass of water and a wet facecloth. He put the glass down on the bedside table, then sat down on the bed beside her to apply the cloth to her forehead. His touch was gentle, the cloth was cool and refreshing and strangely comforting.
'You remind me of a doll,' he informed her dryly. 'A rather fragile, very temperamental clockwork doll who's had her key removed.'
Dragging her eyes open, she managed a weak smile for him.
He smiled too. It was a rare sight, something she had never seen him do before, and it changed the whole structure of his face, softening its aggressively male features and adding an extra dimension to his persona that she found rather disturbing.
Why, she didn't know, and she frowned as she closed her eyes again.
Here, I want you to take these''
She opened her eyes again to find him now holding the glass of water in one hand and two small white pills in the other hand. Prachi stared at them for a moment, then shook her head. 'No,' she refused. 'I don't want sleeping tablets.'
'These are not sleeping tablets,' he assured her. 'They're simply some very mild relaxants you can buy without prescription. You won't sleep unless you want to, but they will help you relax. And anyway,' he added softly, you aren't being given a choice''
And before she could do anything about it he had pressed her chin downwards and popped the pills into her mouth. She almost choked on the water which quickly followed the pills. 'Sorry,' he apologized at her accusing look. 'But you need to be bullied a bit right now. It will save you from having to think for yourself.'
Yes, she had to agree with that. Thinking meant hurting, and at the moment she was hurting enough. On a sigh she let her eyes close again and hoped that the pills do whatever they were supposed to do quickly. She then heard Milind say gruffly 'Go to sleep Prachi. It has been a long, emotional and tiring day. Get some rest and we'll talk about things tomorrow.' She opened her eyes and saw him pull the fluffy comforter at the end of the bed over her.
Yes, tomorrow, she agreed silently as her muscles began to slacken out of the tension-lock that shock had held them in. They could discuss everything tomorrow. She then closed her eyes and drifted into a long deep sleep.
