Star scraps three shows produced by Balaji

Mumbai: Broadcast network Star Group Ltd, which exited a joint venture with Balaji Telefilms Ltd and is looking to sell its 25.99% stake in the television production house, has now decided to scrap three soap operas being produced for it by Balaji.

"We have already informed Balaji Telefilms that we would no longer be telecasting shows Kayamath, Karam Apnaa Apnaa and Kasturi. This decision has been taken because the shows are bad in content and have not been faring well in ratings and the production house has been very unresponsive to changes suggested by the channel. The shows will be terminated by end March," said an executive at Star familiar with the matter, who did not wish to be identified.

Balaji's founder Jeetendra Kapoor, a Bollywood actor, said he wasn't aware of the development.

Two other Balaji shows on Star, Tujh Sang Preet Lagai Sajna and Kis Desh Mein Hai Meraa Dil, may be scrapped as well, added the Star executive.

Television and media industry executives familiar with the matter say the loss of Star business on the five serials could erode Balaji's revenue significantly.

Mint couldn't independently ascertain how much these shows contributed to Balaji's revenue.

The top-rated show among the five in January was Karam Apnaa Apnaa, with a 1.2 viewership rating, according to media agency Mediaedge: cia, part of GroupM India Pvt. Ltd. Comparable numbers for the top-rated programme weren't immediately available but in 2008, the top show on general entertainment channels boasted ratings of around 8.

Balaji ended 2007-08 with a revenue of Rs328.97 crore and a net profit of Rs81.26 crore. It ended the first six months of 2008-09 with a revenue of Rs194.93 crore and a net profit of Rs40.38 crore.

Shares of Balaji ended trading on the Bombay Stock Exchange on Tuesday at Rs39 each. The shares are 82.89% off their 52-week high of Rs228.

Balaji Telefilms rose into prominence with shows such as Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki and Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, which ran on Star Plus and became top-rated shows at the time.

In 2004, Star bought a 25.99% stake in the company. Last year, the network offered Balaji promoters an option to buy back these shares. Star and Balaji had also announced a joint venture in April 2007 to launch regional language entertainment channels. The venture fell apart last year.

Mint has previously reported that Balaji is now talking to a consortium of investors to buy Star's stake. "At the moment, there is no development on the stake matter," said the Star executive.

An executive from a rival production house says the scrapping of the shows will hit Balaji hard. "Their main problem is that they were relying too much on Star. They have very few shows running on the other channels. Channels have been delaying payments to them and even shows on NDTV Imagine such as Bandini are not performing very well for them in ratings."

Balaji will have to rethink strategy on programming, added the executive at the rival production house.

Mediaedge:cia India managing director Shubha George said that the general entertainment space is becoming extremely competitive and that the GEC (general entertainment channel) space has lost at least 8% in viewership (in gross rating points, which is sum of viewership rating points over a set period) last year.

"Star's shows have not been doing exceedingly well, but they've not been doing badly either. I think it's a case of too much fragmentation in the general entertainment space. Players are almost neck-to-neck with each other."

ekta sure is creative. she has the right roles for the right people. shabbir as milind, sanjeeda as ayesha, hell teh whole cast of kayamath and their characters are just great. same goes with the characters of kasamh se etc.👏
ektas actors are too good. her serials are very interesting n creative....... for the first few months but then pataa nahin kya hoti hai. she loses it completely!!!! 🤢
its sad that her bheja doesnt have consistency.
itne saare projects ek saat karna kyun aur sab ko kharaab karna kyun👎🏼. super woman thodi hai!!! 😆ab dekh itne saare soaps ek saath doob rahe hai. 👎🏼but shez been consistent in doing one thing very well. assaulting her favourite/famous characters. if a character is getting a lot of popularity, samjho it'll rot soon.🤢 she is the reason ppl start praising a character, she is the reason ppl throw rotten tomatoes and eggs on a character. no offence. though i sound mean i really appreciate ekta., its just that she shoudlve taken up only few serials say 1 or 2 ok max 3, but not more than 4 😆and concentrate more on them. then this wudnt happen.😭 ab mujhe rona aaraha hai. kayamath ke baad shabbir ko kahaan dekhungi main. michi ko kahaan dekhungi. end of michi is on the way!!!😭ill miss milind terribly. chal bohot kehdiya for today

I don't know anything about other Ekta/Balaji soaps, but watching Kayamath I can only say it started off great- with an interesting and engaging story, some wonderful dialogues and scenarios along with a talented cast doing justice to their characters. But it seemed like success got into the creatives' heads quickly and they became overconfident, complacent and careless repeating the same Michi separation-union saga which slowly reduced the charm that the couple initially had. They ignored the supporting cast and accumulated bloopers and loose ends. Sadly they themselves ended up butchering something so beautiful they had created into a pile of crap.

Thanks for the article.Whts up with Star?I can understand them scrapping other 3 shows but why kdmhmd which is doin good buisness......I hope they dont get scrapped! Some serious revamping goin on afternoon slot as well.....I read this aricle stataing kumkum, grihasti are also goin off air on April
The top two general entertainment channels – STAR Plus and Colors – are fighting a close battle during the prime time. It seems that both the channels have realised that winning the afternoon battle could be a deciding factor.

While Colors is planning to create an afternoon slot -- which it didn't have until now – STAR Plus, is also strengthening its afternoon slot with three new shows -- Phool Kamal Ke, Shradhha and STAR Vivaah. These three new shows will be launched in April. As of now, Colors has been airing its prime-time shows in the afternoon, which has given its GRPs a huge impetus.

Phool
Kamal Ke is a love story depicting how love knows no boundaries and surpasses social norms and barriers. The second show, Shraddha, produced by Siddhant Cinevision, centres around the young protagonist's dedication towards her family.

STAR Vivaah, the best bet of the channel, is a reality based matrimonial show involving eligible young men and women hunting for their ideal matches and tying the nuptial knot on screen. STAR Vivaah will be produced by BAG Films.

Keertan Adyanthaya, executive vice-president and general manager, STAR Plus, says, "The three shows offer distinctive storylines and characters easy to relate to. The fresh shows are an attempt to strengthen our afternoon slot."

Shows such as Kumkum – Pyara Sa Bandhan, Hamari Devrani, Grihasti and Karam Apna Apna will be replaced in the afternoon time band. The first show to go off air will be Karam Apna Apna.

Phool Kamal Ke will replace Kumkum – Pyara Sa Bandhan at 1 pm, Shraddha will replace Karam Apna Apna at 2 pm and Grihasti will give way to STAR Vivaah at 2:30 pm.

The move of scheduling the big ticketed show, STAR Vivaah, in the afternoon time band comes as a surprise. Adyanthaya reasons, "We believe that content that is sticky can generate viewership in unconventional slots – a case in point is Aap Ki Kachehri."

The channel plans to roll out its mixed fare of fiction and reality for the audience in the middle of April.

so we wont get to see that huge mansion that once housed shiv and gauri, then became the shah mansion, then housed parvati's parivar, and now the juneja family? and the jewellery, especially the round flat beads that i first saw on gauri in kaa and then on atleast five other ladies, including heer yesterday?
balaji got too used to recycling houses, jewellery, clothes and scripts. i'm sure once they are forced to stop that, they will be back again with a bang.
