Shah Rukh's 'on the ball'

The last few months have been a roller-coaster ride for Shah Rukh; he's been working like a maniac. Endless shooting schedules, traveling to different parts of the world and staying away from home. Tough life! The worst of it all is the distance from his kids; lately he's been shooting on Sundays too, so that left no 'family day' for the King Khan. But last week he got lucky. He packed up early on a Sunday and rushed home to his bachchas. And guess what he ended up doing? Playing football with his son, Aryan, that's what. Don't we simply love this guy… he's always on the ball. And he knows the rules of the game, too!

THEGREATGAMble: STAR India and SRK have to pull some smart ones to ensure the boat is still sailing for the show

Play by the rules KBC must play it safe

TRP ratings indicate that the show is treading on the downward slope, a few more weeks and some more dips may just be the end of the game

By: Noor Fathima Warsia

It is not that media experts didn't caution that this was likely to happen, but KBC-SRK numbers have dipped as weeks have gone by. TAM Media Research shows that for the (cable & satellite) C&S, aged four years plus in the Hindi speaking markets, KBC opened at an average television rating point (TRP) of 9.85, the highest for any show on television, at present.

This dropped to 9.07 in the following week, falling further to 8.36, 8.62, 7.25, 7.64 and finally to 7.05 in the latest TAM week (the week ending March 10, 2007).

On the face of it, this is not good news for KBC-SRK and many media experts have pointed this out. MindShare Fulcrum's GM Himanshu Shekhar is clear that any number between the 8 to 10 TRP mark, is good for the show.

Now with the numbers dipping, at least one section of the industry believes that this is below expectations.

Still a top show
On the other hand, Lodestar Universal's Nandini Dias is clear that so long as KBC-SRK is among the top shows on television, it is doing well.
When seen in that light, KBC-SRK numbers have always found place in the top shows — in the latest week two episodes featuring in the top 10 itself.

The other shows here are 'Kyunki Saans Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi' and 'Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii'.

Ratings indicate that KBC-SRK, even in a downward slope, has settled in a wave pattern that means that every alternate week, STAR Plus and advertisers have either something to look forward to, or something to worry about.

Shekhar believes that the specials on the show, whether Republic Day special, Valentine special or Holi special, will give the show enough numbers to maintain a good average. The ratings, so far, vindicate that — Holi special rating a huge 9-plus.

Primetime slot
KBC-SRK has allowed STAR Plus to maintain its lead in primetime. More importantly, the 9 pm slot, where Zee TV's 'Kasamh Se' and 'Saath Phere' were giving STAR a tough time, again see STAR's dominating. However, from a cost point of view, some media experts opine that the show is a concern. Maxus' MD Ajit Varghese stated, "For the money charged for the show, these numbers aren't good enough. The ratings can dip going further and if that happens, it can be a lot of problem."
So far, the boat is still sailing for the show. However, STAR India and SRK sure have to pull some smart ones to ensure that the situation remains so.

A few more weeks and some more dips and the game may just be over.

Be it the film or the television industry, producers always try to play safe by trying out tried and tested formulae. Every hit show is followed by a spate of similar shows. Both Zee and Sony tried to cash in on the success of KBC by presenting Sawaal Dus Crore Ka and Jeeto Chappar Phad Ke. The fact that the two flopped didn't seem to bother anyone, as Zee and Sony tried to compete again with the second season of KBC with Kam Ya Zyada and Deal Ya No Deal respectively. Laughter Challenge's success, lured Zee to make Johnny Aala Re, Sahara to produce Comedy Champions while Sony launched Comedy Ka Baadsah. But have they been able to live up to the popularity of the original? The answer is a big no, which again emphasises on the current trend on TV that only leaders succeed, the followers don't.

Ashwini Yardi, Programming Head, Zee TV, whose Antakshari is doing much better in comparison to Star One's Antakshari, says, "In a way it is true, but it needn't be the case always. At the end of the day it's not the big budget or the lavish sets that matter, viewers just want to see good content, no matter which channel gives them that."

Balaji Telefilms, the pioneers of the Indian soap operas have had countless pretenders to the throne, trying to emulate their hit soaps with little success. Many a producers have tried copying the Ekta Kapoor format, but Kyunki Saans Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi still rules the TRP charts with these copycat shows being nowhere close to it.

Sandiip Sickand, Chief Creative Director, Sony TV points out, "Actually this has been a problem with entertainment since long. we have seen before that when a movie called Nagin became a hit, many movies were based on the same concept and none of them did well. In this field, maybe one should always try something new." Agreed Mr Sickand, but what about Sony trying to (unsuccessfully) make Balaji imitations like Kaajjal and Kulvaadhu?

Nivedita Basu, Creative Director of Star explains, "No, one cannot simply copy a show. You should be different in your own way. Saat Phere is a good example. They definitely have a theme adapted from Balaji but their presentation with the cast and other things is new. There is nothing wrong in getting inspired with something but you should have your own identity too."

So, does the loyalty of the audiences also matter? "I don't think so. Viewers are very smart these days. They will only see what they like. You cannot fool them," says Nivedita.

Sandiip Sickand on the other hand believes viewer loyalty does count to an extent. "Yes and it's very difficult to make viewers switch their loyalty but if you have novelty value you are going to win the game," he says.

Defending the trend of copying popular shows, Ashwini Yardi says, "You cannot force a viewer to sit and spend his/her time watching your show," So was this the reason why Zee's Sawaal Dus Crore Ka didn't fare well in comparison to KBC? "Yes, but there can be other reasons as well. Like the wrong timing and presentation," she admits.

Whatever be the arguments, it's sure for now that the followers have a long long way to go .

War of the worlds

With the Cricket World Cup hogging prime time on television right now, drawing rooms are fast changing into war zones

Express News Service

Its 9 pm. Bula Burman, a homemaker has finished her evening chores and has made herself some pakoras to munch on while watching ShahRukh Khan cajole awkward contestants to a state of carefree banter in her favorite prime time programme Kaun Banega Crorepati. As she munches into her second pakora Shah Rukh's smiling face disappears from the screen. It's replaced with that of a jubilant New Zealand spinner Daniel Vettori celebrating his first wicket of the match. Prasanta Burman, her husband, a retired accountant of Damodar Valley Corporation has decided that cricket will rule their drawing room for the rest of this month. The Burman drawing room has needless to say changed into a war zone. "The world cup fever has taken over the city but no one spares a thought for those who don't like the game. At night I like to watch my favourite programmes but my husband refuses to comply. Its cricket and only cricket," complains homemaker the former.

The latter however has another tale to narrate "My wife rules the remote throughout the year. It's only once every four years that such a tournament happens. Why shouldn't I be allowed to enjoy what the whole world ought to be enjoying for a few days?"

A sentiment echoed by 35-year old businessman Deepak Chatterjee who deals with building materials. "I have to visit friends to watch cricket matches, or watch the matches on our community hall TV as my wife and mother refuse to miss their daily dose of Saas-Bahu series. A world Cup happens only once in four years, something they should be considerate about," feels Chatterjee. His wife Moushumi, a professional singer however says that at the end of a long day she needs to unwind in front of the TV. "The few hours I spend in front of the TV is the only time when I can relax and I cannot compromise on that."

The war over the remote is an age-old battle, which gets worse during the World Cup when couples have different ideas over what each would like to watch. Both Burman and Chatterjee feel that since they concede to their wife's demands for TV programmes throughout the year, on occasions like the World Cup they should get the priority. Even celebrity households are not spared the war. Actor Sabyasachi Chakraborty a self-confessed cricket freak says that his wife's penchant for Bengali serials always caused problems during any match. It was always a match vs a serial or film that she wanted to watch," says the actor.

But ironically in the Arora household the roles are revered. For the newly married couple it is wife Sumitra, a homemaker who wields the remote every time there is a cricket match. Says her husband Dhruv Arora, a Phd student of Chemistry at the New York University, "I don't like watching cricket, and the World Cup is nothing but a bother for me. I end up missing my favourite programmes on Star World and Discovery when the matches are on. Needless to say we have endless arguments over the remote."

So to avoid the battle during World Cup Chakraborty decided to gift his wife a TV. "The solution was quite elementary really," says the actor. And so this time Chakraborty can happily watch Sourav conquer the Caribbean while wife Mithu can enjoy uncovering the next nerve wrecking twist in her favorite serial.

TALKING POINT: SRK says he knows he
will be spoken about, good, bad or ugly.

Mumbai: Shah Rukh Khan and Amar Singh's feud made headlines in the past few weeks with the actor calling the Samajwadi Party General Secretary a darinda (devil), at the Filmfare Awards function recently. The actor was promoting a watch brand in Mumbai, and CNN-IBN caught up with him about the protests outside his house.

Rohit Khilnani: It's always great interviewing Shah Rukh Khan since he has an answer to every question. So you are comfortable giving interviews, right?

Shah Rukh Khan: Yes, I'm good doing interviews.

Rohit Khilnani: You have taken the brand TAG forward, it was a part of Don and Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC).

Shah Rukh Khan: Normally, when I endorse something, I do end up having a liking for it. On KBC, it's not a marketing gimmick. I give watches I wear on the days I feel like giving them away.

Rohit Khilnani: You are a family man and there were protests outside your house. Weren't you scared?

Shah Rukh Khan: It happened a while ago and I've said whatever I had to say about it. I think everyone understands my state of mind. I am not someone who reacts to what people say. It's been years since I realised that I will be spoken about, good, bad or ugly. So if I react to it, I would be spending my whole day on it. Yes, I do react to the safety of my kids. I'm glad they are safe and it's my duty to keep them safe.

King Khan on brand SRK, his kids and why he absolutely loves women!

Whose autograph would you want?
I have just asked for a hockey stick because I hear Dhanraj Pillai is coming here and I would definitely want his autograph for myself.

What's one social cause closest to you?
Anything to do with women. I absolutely love women. I'm doing 'Chak De' to encourage them to get into sports. I also want to get some public toilets made for women in smaller cities. I have grown up in Delhi and when I used to drive down to Agra, I would see women actually bathing in open, obviously attracting undue attention. I have a huge amount of respect for the privacy of a woman. I don't even look into my wife's cupboard or her purse. I don't know how I should go about doing it, but I do want to do it someday.

One person you never thanked, but you want to…
I want to thank my father. I never got a chance because I was too young when he died. I want to thank him today because I can see my daughter and son are growing up to be like him.

Would you feel more secure if your mother was around?
I think I would. She would always take up for me.

What do you think of when you want to smile?
I think of all the gifts that God has given me. I think of my kids. Looking at them sleep I smile. I see them coming out of the bathroom with their little towels around their little bodies and I smile.

What's one worry that's on top of your mind now?
I hope my kids are treated as individuals in their own right. It's a tough job, but I try and give them as normal a childhood as possible. I hope my father's genes will help them sail through. He was a good, free-thinking, honest man.

Film star, TV host, youth icon — which describes you best?
I am just an actor, working hard to preserve the image I've achieved. I am a servant of my image. I know I'm working for SRK, the brand. People should also know that. My advice to youngsters would be: Don't be trapped by anybody's expectations of you. Stand by what you believe in. People who mind won't matter and people who matter won't mind it.

STARRY QUIZ: SRK will quiz Sanjay Dutt and Boman Irani in a special episode of the show.

New Delhi: After special episodes of Kaun Banega Crorepati on Valentine's Day and Holi, there's another one in the offing. And this time, it's Munnabhai and his rival on the show.

Host Shah Rukh Khan will quiz Sanjay Dutt and Boman Irani in a special episode of the show.

Sources say the celebrity participants won a good amount in the quiz and Dutt plans to donate the money to a drug rehab for children.

It looks like the special episodes of KBC with celebrity participants are doing some good to society, after all.

After adding colour to the Holi Special of the show on March 1, actress Preity Zinta had donated the money she won on the show (Rs 25 lakh) to the Shimla District Red Cross Society.
