Big B will be in hospital for 10 more days By: Sandeep Ashar December 1, 2005
Big B's doctors, in a closed door meeting with the Bachchans, Amar Singh and Anil Ambani, decided that an emergency surgery was inevitable
Till 4 pm yesterday, neither the Bachchans nor the doctors knew that Big B would require a surgery.
At 4:30 pm, the Computed Tomography (CT) scan revealed that the star was suffering from diverticulitis, which caused perforations in his intestine.
The doctors, in a closed door meeting with the Bachchans, Amar Singh and Anil Ambani, decided that an emergency surgery was inevitable.
Infection may have occurred months back
According to Dr Roy Patankar, a gastro-intestinal surgeon at KJ Somaiya hospital, diverticulitis can't develop overnight.
"The infection (diverticoloses — pre-condition of diverticulitis) could have occurred at least three months back. Normally, the surgery is a planned one. If this was an emergency surgery, then it would imply that the perforations had ruptured," he said.
Two-hour operation
A team of four doctors, led by Dr Sadanand Shetty, gastrointestinal surgeon operated on Big B at 6.30 pm yesterday.
The operation took about two hours. The other doctors were Dr P Jagannath, consulting cancer surgeon at Lilavati, Dr JB Agarwal and Dr Rajeev Shah (both gastrointestinal surgeons).
Bachchan can't have any solids for the next five days. Sources at the hospital say that the superstar should be at Lilavati for at least another 10 days.
How is the family coping?
Big B has been in hospital for four days now. On the first night, both Jaya and Abhishek stayed with Amitabh. On the second night, daughter Shweta stayed with her father. The night vigil is shared between mother and daughter.
The other members of the family come back at 7 am each morning.
What is diverticulitis?
Diverticulitis is a disease of the bowel, in particular the large intestine. It develops from diverticulosis, which involves the formation of pouches (diverticula) on the outside of the colon.
Diverticulitis results if one of these diverticulum becomes inflamed. The symptoms of diverticulitis are similar to food poisoning — pain, fever, diarrhoea and loss of appetite.
