Part 6~ The Reject Table
--At Lunch, in the cafeteria
Everyone was scattered out in the large cafeteria. People were in their usual clicks, sitting at their usual tables.
Muskaan: Kassy, mujhe lagta hai ki iss Mr. Wilson ka bheja fry hogeya! (Kassy, I think Mr. Wilson's lost his mind!)
Kasturi: Why? What'd he do?
Muskaan: Ask me what he didn't do! He made me and that Kaan kajhure (a bug of some sort) sit beside each other. Woh-
Kasturi: Rahul. His name's Rahul.
Muskaan: Yea yea, same difference! Woh Rahul ki bache! I swear to Rabba ji, he is such a retard! Main aissa kaun sa kaam kardiya, jo mujhe itni bari saazah milrahihe? (What kind of crime have I committed that I have to go through such a big punishment?)
Kasturi just smiled. Her friend was so childish at times. Sometimes she wondered how her and Muskaan could be so different and get along so well. It was actually quite strange, because Kasturi and Muskaan hadn't known each other for all too long. Maybe a year or two- yet it felt like Muskaan was her sister- a real sister.
Kasturi's thoughts broke with a sudden push from the back.
Anita: Move it loser.
Anita pushed her way to the front of the line. Like always, she got her way. There was no surprise in that. It was as if she had cast a spell on all the people here. If she said sit- you had to sit. If she said stand- you'd stand. Kasturi hated it! She knew how stuck-up Anita was- but Kasturi also knew that Anita was only there in words. Why didn't anybody else see that?
Usually Anita and her little posy cut through, but today she was with Robbie and Rahul. She was trying so hard to hit on Robbie; it was obvious by the way she was acting. Kasturi had known Anita long enough to know her "impress the guys" moves.
"How clingy can she get?"
Robbie on the other hand didn't look much too interested; he just chewed his gum and his eyes wondered around the room, scanning everything ever so slowly.
Kasturi observed how he reacted when he saw the different foods. He at times would stare for a long time and then look away. He'd also block his nose, and make strange faces.
Lunch lady: What would you like today young man?
Robbie: What the Fu*k is this?
He pointed towards the lasagna, which was usually served on Monday's and Wednesdays from the past couple of years.
Robbie: Listen lady (referring to the lunch lady) either you learn how to cook- or get a new job! Like seriously- who in the world eats this... this BLAGH!
Kasturi couldn't help but interrupt. She always thought that the lunches tasted great, and she also knew the amount of effort put into cooking so many different meals all in one day.
"Robbie, if you have a problem with the lunches here- I don't get why you don't go out and buy something else. She (points to lunch lady) sacrifices countless hours in a day preparing food for all of us- just so we get something to eat!"
Robbie: Firstly, I didn't ask for a lecture, especially from someone like you. (Scans her bottom to top) And secondly, she gets paid for what she does. And if she's gonna serve this crap- then why waste the time cooking here?
Anita then had to butt in, like she did in everything!
"Ugh. Robbie darling! Don't waste your time speaking to this loser over here. (Gives Kasturi a dirty look) And don't worry about lunch- Anita Mehra's friends only get the best! My daddy gets his men to bring the most expensive meals available."
Kasturi: Yea. Your daddy is also the one who's got a really big hand in contributing to global warming.
Anita: You know what Kassturi? Just shut up, and get out of my face.
Kasturi watched Anita grab onto Robbie's arm and drag him over to the famously known "popular" table. She also noticed Robbie wrap his arm around her waste (almost touching her... yea I think you know what I'm talking about ; P)
"Disgusting."
But, rather than leaving, Rahul understood how stupidly his friend had acted, and so he apologized to Kasturi on Robbie's behalf.
Kasturi: I don't think you should be apologizing to me Rahul. It was your friend who behaved like an idiot- and honestly, I don't care if he says anything about me. But who gave him the right to diss the lunch lady like that?
Rahul: I know, and I'm really sorry. It's just that he's adjusting you know-
Kasturi: And so are you. But you're not acting like he is!
Rahul (before he leaves to go eat his lunch): I guess some people adapt better than others.
Kasturi grabbed her lunch and walked over to the table she usually sat at- the one near the back. She liked it there because nobody really hung out at the back, it was quiet- but with the exception of Muskaan. But Muskaan was nowhere to be seen; she was probably still waiting in line- or arguing with somebody, which wasn't really new news.
She carefully placed her tray down on the table and got out her history books to begin studying for the upcoming test that was to be taking place next week. She also had two extra credit projects to hand in by the end of next month, and to mention setting up for the annual performance night.
Kasturi (thinking out loud): How in the world will I manage all this?
She immediately began scanning her books, but stopped every few minutes to take a bite out of her sandwich.
"What's this?"
Something that resembled a piece of lined paper was floating above her chicken soup.
"A letter?" she thought as she opened the piece of paper.
"Reject Table." Was handwritten in fine blue felt across the crumpled sheet.
"Reject?" Kasturi thought for several minutes, thus realizing who was behind this scheme.
ANITA (mouthing the words)
She crumpled the piece of paper back into her fist and walked over to Anita's table. Everybody there was caught up in a conversation about Robbie's new concert taking place two weeks from today.
Kasturi: What's this? (slams the paper down on their table)
Anita: What's what?
Kasturi: You know what I'm talking about Anita. What do you mean, "reject" table?
Anita (acting innocent): Kasturi, I don't know what you're talking about. (Breaks out laughing)
Kasturi stole glances with the rest of the people sitting there. They all looked equally as amused, other than Rahul who didn't seem to be really paying attention.
"Is there something funny?"
Robbie (obnoxiously): Funny? Of course there's something funny. After all, you're here aren't you?
Kasturi: Excuse me?
Robbie lifted his feet onto the table, and sat back, a grin spread across his face.
Robbie: You're acting so surprised at being called a reject. Don't you see that you are one?
Kasturi looked directly into his eyes. She tried searching to see if there was any sort of compassion in him, but she sensed nothing. They were Infact cold, reflecting his bitter personality.
"If I'm a reject, then I'm proud of it."
She took the piece of paper in her hand and crumpled it into a smaller ball, then throwing it on to the ground.
-- At her table
Muskaan: Oye Kassy! Sit down na!
Kasturi seated herself beside Muskaan, and stared blankly into her plate.
"Hey!"
The 2 friends saw Raunak approach them with a tray in his hand. They moved over, making space for him to sit.
Raunak: Did I miss anything?
Muskaan: Pata nahin. Main toh abhi abhi ayi hoon. (Don't know, I've just came.) Kassy? (pokes Kasturi in the rib)
"Ouch! Muskaan that hurts!"
Muskaan: Well if you don't put on any weight that's obviously gonna hurt naa? Okay what' ev! Did we miss anything? I mean I saw you at Mehra's table...
Kasturi: You know what Muskaan? It's funny. I'm having more hate towards this Robbie guy then I've ever had with Anita.
Raunak: Why? What happened?
Kasturi smiles to herself J: Nothing happened... yet.
Raunak and Muskaan: Huh?
Kasturi smiles even more widely.
"Mr. Robbie Sabarwal, I'll show you what this reject can do.J"
