Amanat284 (good to ‘speak’ to you again)

“Finally caught up. Glad to see Prerna not taking any of Mohini's BS. But I wonder, what is she thinking of Anu at the moment? After he fainted in front of her.”

And

“I was wondering why a man like Moloy would ever marry someone nasty like Mohini and I think you've given me an explanation here. There was an earlier paragraph that he wished Anu to have a boy next.

“Your muse seems to be very active. It's a good thing forus.”

Hmm, my turn to monologue… kidding.

Anu did not faint in front of Prerna. She left and did not turn back or even look at him when he called to her. There is a great significance to this action and it will be slowly revealed over the next two chapters. So for now she does not know he blacked out, and with raging hormones after Shena’s birth she would not have felt it either. Prerna is in mommy mode at the moment…protect your child.

Moloy and Mohini… I could write a book on this alone…

My view (and given the background we have) we know that Moloy fell madlyin love with Mohini and started BP in order to be considered worthy enough to marry her. So to me it means she was a high society lass that has always thought highly of her status and position in society. Her upbringing would have cemented these views, and if anyone ever married for status and money it is high society lasses. She also knows that it is her marriage to Moloy that secures her position in society. Hence her obsession with Prenra wanting access to this.

When I imagine Mohini as a youngster, I see someone akin to Komolika butnot as vindictive. Mohini had at first shown some indication of a moral compass…. Although lately???? Add to this the inclination of the pretentious society she associates with to skinner and deride each other, it is easy to understand where her pretentiousness stems from (this goes for Nivedita as well). Prerna has never had to deal with such pretentiousness and is comfortable in her own skin, she feels no need to pretend, although she has leaned to control her mouth (verbal responses).

There is an old proverb that goes; those who threaten you the most are those you will attack hardest. (The writers understand this, which is why Mohini will always remain the main antagonist to AnuPre. Both Anu and Moloy love her – alas differently.)

This is human nature. Mohini feels threatened by Prerna on so many levels and she sees it as a personal blow whenever anyone sides with Prerna. This is why she has become ruthless in her attacks.

I actually feel sorry for Moloy. But he is no fool, he knows what he married. His once blind love for her sweet talks and “sweetness” has turned acidic. Her only redemption in his eyes (my opinion) was her love for their son… but he has now realized that even that is conditional.

As for my muse drives, she me insane with her connections, reasons and insight. Reining her in on this is next to impossible at the moment.

Anurag brought his car to a standstill outside the address his father had given him. He turned to look at the house, which was modest in size, even in consideration to their actual home. The thought reminded him that he still needed to finalize some matters with the renovators. He closed his eyes and lowered his forehead to rest against the steering wheel. Things had turned for the worst and while he had always believed they could withstand anything, it was Prerna’s stubbornness he knew he would be facing. He knew she had reason enough to oppose things, even he was angry with his mother for ousting his wife and child, not once but twice.

Memories of Switzerland flashed across his mind, clearer this time…. Never again! He would not allow Prerna to again make the mistake of placing distance between them, with or without consulting him. They got into this together and that was how they would remain – together.

With his resolve firmly set, Anurag got out of the car and made his way towards the house. But as he reached up to knock, the door suddenly swung open. Startled at first, Anurag looked at a determined Shukar, who folded his arms and continued to glare at him.

Hesitantly, Anurag said, “Greetings.”

Shukar simply tilted his head as if to acknowledge but said nothing. His objective was easy enough for Anurag to understand and required no explanation.

Anurag visibly swallowed and then said, “I would like to speak with Prerna.”

“Really?” Shukar asked, “You want to speak to sister Prerna?”

Anurag nodded.

“You know, you Basus are something else, you know that? Yesterday your mother as good as threw sister Prerna out of that house, and today you’re here wanting to speak to her.” Anurag made to say something but Shukar overrode any argument as he continued. “Your family has this belief that you have a right to whatever it is you want, and that everyone is only there to please you.” Shukar held his hand up to silence Anurag. “Not once, during any of this, have you considered sister Prerna’s situation, her condition. We were all considerate of the fact that you’d lost your memory, we even made allowances for it. But in doing so we forgot one of the most essential aspect of dealing with your family. Do you even know what that is?”Shukar demanded while glaring at Anurag, who shook his head in reply.

“None of you care for the pain you inflict on others. Prerna has done so much for you and your family, but what has she gotten in return? A baby that’s rejected by the father’s family, a supposed husband that does not even know his own mind and cannot even stand up for them.No. You have failed sister Prerna on so many occasions, yet you expect us to allow you to see her.” The unwavering tone of Shukar’s voice left Anurag in no doubt that there was no chance of convincing the man to change his mind. Anurag also knew that Shukar was only following his mother’s instructions. He looked past Shukar, hopping that he could at least catch a glimpse of her, could appeal to her, but Prerna was not within the living area.

His gaze landed on Shivani who stood off to one side. She had always helped him. Again the thought caught him off-guard but he did not have time to really consider it. He tilted his head to the side, hoping she understood what he was asking.

Shivani turned her hand palm up, indicating she was helpless in the matter.

Anurag let out a heavy sigh and turned his attention back to Shukar, asking, “Are Prerna and Shena okay?”

“Sister and her daughter are fine, we know how to look after our own.” Shukar answered and then pulled himself up to his full height, as if expecting a fight. Anurag for a moment again glanced at Shivani who made a calling gesture with her one hand, then held her hand up with all five fingers extended.

Nodding, Anurag said, “I can see that I’m not welcome here, so I will leave. Please tell Prerna I came to see them.”

“It would be better for both families if you severed all ties with ours.”

Shukar’s words shocked Anurag and set his heart racing. Anurag automatically replied, “No, no, no. I can’t do that.”

“It would be best for everyone involved, especially sister Prerna, she could move on.”

The thought of Prerna with anyone else sent shudders through his soul. Everything within him shouted in defiance. Angered, Anurag asserted, “Prerna is my wife, I will never consent to a divorce!”

“That may be so, but given your record I think the court would see it differently. You have supposedly married four times in the last year alone… so the courts will see this situation differently if you choose to oppose it.”

Anurag clenched his fists, hoping to somehow contain his anger. He knew that right then was not the time to get into a fight, he had to remain on good footing with her family. His family created enough problems.

Having managed to control his threatening temper, Anurag firmly replied, “This is not the time to discuss such matters.”

“But they need to be decided on.”

Firmly Anurag countered, “And Prerna and I will be the ones to decide them, not anyone else.”

A visibly irritated Shukar stepped forward and firmly said, “I think you should leave now, before either of us say things we may later regret.”

Anurag nodded then turned to leave, causing Shukar to watch him with a shocked expression.

Anurag clenched his fists as he returned to his car.He could not quite place the sense of unease that overcame him, it pushed down on him as if truing to press him into the earth. He looked at his watch, he would phone Shivani in five minutes and find out what is going on, at least she would tell him what was going on.

Prerna sat on her bed with Shena, who lay on her back in front of her mother. Reaching out to Shena’s hand, Prerna used her index finger to elongate the girl’s little fingers, smiling as they pressed against hers, as if gripping it.

“I don’t know whose hands you got, because both your father and I have long fingers.” Prerna said and then used her thumb to gently stroke the upper part of Shena’s hand, before turning it and lowering it again. Prerna shifted her hand and reached for one of Shena’s feet, smiling as she said, “You definitely have your father’s feet though, my toes don’t look like that.”

Shena moved her foot as if to object, causing Prerna to release her hold and say, “You’re still very much the little kicker aren’t you?”

Shena only looked at her in reply. Prerna watched the little girl for several long moments before closing her eyes and again fighting the sense of desolation that constantly loomed over her. She swallowed against the scratchy sensation in her throat and then blinked several times in the hope of dispersing the tears that threatened to spill.

With a wavering voice she softly said, “I never wanted any of this,” and swallowed against the sob. Using both her hands she ran them over Shena, breathing deep, measured, breaths to regain control her emotions. Hesitantly she said, “Your father loves you so much, and he has not even spent all that much time with you.” She closed her eyes and swallowed, before saying, “I’m so sorry Shena. You know I never thought it would be like this. I wanted you to grow up with so much love, but fate has destined your father and me separate paths. I tried, but perhaps your grandmother is right: we should make one clean break, no matter how much it hurts, because it will be better in the long run.”

Prerna looked at her daughter who seemed content and oblivious of the storm raging within her mother. She knows she had done the right thing… But the right thing by who?Her mind questioned. “I love your father so much that it hurts. Even when we were apart, it was never like this. I could at least talk to him then. I don’t know what is harder, ignoring his call or being away from him.”

Prerna refused to reminisce of the time when things had been similar, when someone had come between them. Back then she had to face the daily torture of being both so close yet so far from him. This while knowing that no matter what she could not turn to him, could not go to him, because if she had it would have weakened her resolve. She had done what she had needed to do, for him, which was why she had been able to bear the separation. This time, however, it felt as if a vital part of her had been removed. And without it, functioning became nearly impossible. She again looked at the little girl in front of her and wondered how it was possible to love something so small so much. So much that she would give up on the one thing she had held as dear… She missed the comfort of his embrace… the calmness that filled her when he was around.

It had taken less than two days for her to once again become so attached to him that his absence became physically painful. For possibly the hundredth time that day she asked herself, ‘What have I done to us? He must hate me now, I have broken every promise I’ve made him.’ She tried to stop the thought but still it formed, causing her to close her eyes and allow her entire body to sag. In a whisper she added, “I’ve even taken you from him.”

Prerna swiped at the tears that escaped. She needed to be strong, if only it wasn’t so difficult.

Her heartfelt shattered, her soul paper thin, and while she knew things would get easier as time passed, she also knew neither her heart or soul would ever completely heal. Even were he excised from her heart and her life with a surgeon’s precision, his imprint would remain on her soul, where it will forever taint any relationship she dared to enter into.

She opened her eyes to look at her daughter. She had done the right thing, only it did not feel that way. Mohini would never accept them. It was a fact she was as certain of as her own name. The woman’s bitter words after their engagement still haunted Prerna.

Just as Prerna knew that if Anurag was ever forced to choose between her and his mother… ‘No!’ Prerna reprimanded herself, she would not allow such thoughts to consume her – they were in the past and had to remain there. She had to remain strong for their daughter. She watched Shena as she drew in a deep, steadying breath, before stating, “You have no idea how much I love your father, or how much I want him here or part of your life, but you are my responsibility now and I will not allow anyone to hurt you…”

Shivani first checked to ensure that no one would listen in on her conversation and then called Anurag. After the second ring he answered, his voice was heavy with concern as he asked, “What’s going on there, Shivani?”

“Anurag, what can I say? Things are so confusing here.”

“What do you mean?” His voice even more panicked as he asked, “Are Prerna and Shena okay? Father mentioned something about them attending a clinic.”

“That was just to check Shena after the birth, but everything is fine.”

She could hear the relief in his voice when he said,“That’s good. How’s Prerna?

“I’m concerned about sister…” Shivani started only to be cut short.

“What’s wrong with Prerna, are there complications?”

“No, nothing is wrong with sister, well not physically, she is well, eats, sleeps, but I can see she’s hurting and unhappy, although she tries to hide it. I don’t think she wants to add to anyone’s worries.”

“Look, Shivi, I need your help. I have to see Prerna, I have to talk to her.”

“Ugh, um, Anurag that’s going to be impossible, everyone here guards her like gold.”

“Which is why I need your help… Please Shivi, I can’t let her do this to us again.”

Shivani was thoughtfully silent for several long moments, causing Anurag to utter a panicked, “Shivani? Are you still there?”

“I’m here just let me think for a moment….” Several long silent moments followed before she exclaimed, “I got it! But you must promise to be quiet and do exactly as I say.”

“Yes! If it gets me to meet Prerna I’ll accept any terms.”

“This may not work so just be aware of that.’

“What’s the plan?”

“We’ll sneak you into sister’s room when sister goes for a bath.”

“What?” Anurag asked shocked, “Are you mad?”

“Just listen to me. Shena will be with mother, so she will be busy. Shukar will be with sister-in-law and no one will think of entering Prerna’s room. You can wait there for her. But just make sure you don’t get caught, because there’s no telling what brother will do if he finds you there.”

A knock sounded at the door, causing Prerna to quickly dash her tears and clear her throat.

“Yes,” She called as she started to cover up Shena.

Shivi entered the room and said, “I’ve come to fetch Shena.”

“You didn’t need to do that.” Prerna said as she got up from the bed.

“So can’t I spend some quality time with my niece before mom monopolizes all the time with?”

“I never said that. It’s just that I normally take her when I’m ready.”

“Well the washroom is empty, so move before brother decides to take it and then he’ll take forever to finish.”

Prerna smiled and walked over to Shivani, carefully handing Shena over to her, “Thank you.”

“You can thank me later.” Shivani said turning from her, causing Prerna to frown.

Anurag moved around her room, glancing over everything as he waited for her. With the door partially opened, he ensured he remained out of the line of sight of any possible passer by. His gaze landed on the payal he had gifted her. He moved to pick it up and smiled at the memory of how it would chime to announce his love, whenever she moved. A sense of excitement filled him at the thought of meeting her, something that had seemed missing earlier. Although the minutes he waited seemed like hours, he knew she would be there soon. It was her room after all.

He placed the payal back on the dressing table. Then he felt her. His breath caught and his heart sped, a feeling he always associated with Prerna’s presence. Instantly he turned towards the door, moments before she entered, only to turn and fully close it.

He moved, whispering her name, and watched as she instantly turned to face him, her shock evident. Before she could place any distance between them, before she could allow any awkwardness to fill the moment, before she even had the opportunity to question his presence there, he pulled her into an embrace and absorbed the soothing balm her presence and proximity always provided him.

“Anurag?”She questioned against his chest, moments before he felt her back stiffen and she start to resist his embrace.

“Shh, Prerna. Please don’t fight me, just let me hold you.” He whispered against her hair, “I’ve missed this.” He felt her again relax against him and tightened his hold on her. It was such moments that made anything tolerable. Moments when everything and anything they faced became inconsequential and the only thing that mattered was them. He closed his eyes and soaked up the warming sensations that slowly spread throughout his body.

He felt her shudder, an action that startled him and caused him to pull back slightly to look at her. Tears? Her tears always distressed him. He moved to wipe them, asking “What happened?”

But before he could wipe her tears she moved back and then held up her hands. Her palms turning upwards for a moment, before her shoulders drooped and her hands again lowered. She visibly swallowed and then shook her head.

Anurag stepped forward and again drew her into an embrace, gently asking, “Did you think I would let you go that easily? You promised me and I intend to kept you to that promise.”

Prerna for a moment softened against him and he thanked the gods for that, knowing they had a lot to work through. A calm and willing Prerna would be more willing to listen to reason. He needed that from her. But just as he too relaxed into the moment, he felt her back again stiffen and immediately knew that the moment had come to an end. He would undoubtedly face her argumentative side.

She pulled back, but not entirely out of his embrace. Her confused expression had him immediately hesitate. It was obvious enough that she would not lay-into him for being there, but he had no idea as to what was on her mind. When her hesitation stretched for a moment too long, he asked, “What happened?”

Visibly confused, she asked, “You remembered?”Adding a moment later, “When?”

Anurag drew in a deep breath and released his hold, instantly regretting it. “Just after you left, actually. I got a whole series of flashes and blacked out.”

Within a heartbeat her hands reached for his face as she checked him over, “Are you okay.”

He reached up to take hold of her hands, noticing the concern in her eyes – immediately thankful that she had not distanced herself from him, as he had feared. “I’m fine. The doctors at the hospital checked me over and said everything is all right.”

“Hospital?” She questioned, and instantly she became visibly distressed.

“Really, Prerna, I’m fine. The doctors dismissed me, I did not run off – although the though had crossed my mind.”

She pulled her one hand from his and slapped his shoulder, seriously demanding, “And that is supposed to make me feel better?”

“It had to happen,” he reasoned, adding, “Or else I would not have…” although he left the rest unsaid.

Still confused, Prerna asked him, “Or else you would not have, what?”

Anurag recaptured her other hand and brought them in front of him. He led them together and he looked right into her eyes as he said, “I remembered what happened in Switzerland.”

Her eyes flickered to the side and then down.

Instantly he released her hands and reached for her cheeks, encouraging her to look up at him. Gently with his left thumb he stroked over the skin, and said, “Sorry, sorry.” He released her cheeks and moved to hold his ears. “I’m really sorry.”

Prerna’s brow knit moments before she asked, “What are you sorry for?”

Her words caused an image flash across his mind.Instinctively he reached out with his left hand to caress her cheek and stated, with remorse, “I slapped you. I’m so sorry. Please forgive me.”

Prerna reached up to clasp his hand and drew it down, holding it between both of hers,as she said, “There is no reason to, I said many hurtful things that day.”

“But I still should not have raised my hand to you,”he insisted as his other hand came to cover hers. Immediately he realized she was not wearing her engagement ring. His brow knit as he moved his hand and turned hers to inspect her hand. Distressed to confirm that her ring was missing, he asked, “Where’s your ring?”

Prerna pointed to her dressing table as she said, “I took it off before going to the washroom.”

Anurag moved from her to collect up her ring.Returning, he slipped it onto her finger, firmly stating, “Its place is here, and always will be.” He covered her hand with his, but noticed her hesitation.

“Anurag…” she started, but then grew silent.

Instinctively Anurag drew her into is embrace as he said. “Seven lifetimes Prerna. You are tied to me for seven lifetimes. And I promise you that I will find you in each and every one of them. I won’t let you go.” He kissed her forehead and then pulled back enough to look into her eyes.“But tell me something, honestly.”

Prerna tilted her head, her brow knitting for a moment, before she lifted her brows in a gesture he instantly recognized.

He took a few moments to compose the question that had been haunting him since he’d made sense of his newly remembered memories, and then started. “On your resume, you mentioned Switzerland as your favourite place, and since I now know why you married Bajaj and that could not be the reason why Switzerland?” Prerna’s shocked expression had him quickly add, “I mean I did everything I could to make you hate that place.”

Prerna shook her head, but smiled, before replying,“It is because you chose it for us.” On noticing Anurag’s confused expression she added, “It was where I came to know exactly how much you love me… and had things been different…” Prerna left the remainder unsaid.

Just then a knock sounded at the door, with Veena calling, “Priyu, open the door.”

Anurag looked about him in alarm, looking for somewhere he could hide. Prerna gestured the bed and he quickly moved to slip under it while she went to open the door. Prerna checked to ensure he was out of immediate sight before opening the door.

Her mother stepped inside carrying Shena, at first looking about the room.

Concerned by her mothers actions, and hoping beyond hope that she had not learned of Anurags presence Prerna asked.” Mom, what’s the matter? What are you looking for?”

Veena turned to Shivani as she started, “Shivani is acting all strange again and I know her well enough to know that she is trying to hide something.”

“What would Shivani want to hide?” Prerna asked, catching Shivani’s eye and tilting her head just enough to indicate the bed. Asher mother turned around, Prerna noticed Shivani’s obvious sigh of relief.”

“That’s what I though, but you know with Shivani you never know.”

Prerna moved to take Shena from her mother and asked, “Why the sudden concern?”

“You know how she behaves out of character whenever she’s nervous about something, and she seemed especially insistent on bringing Shena here.”

Prerna looked at Shena, then glanced at Shivani before answering, “She might be nervous about handling Shena.”

Prerna took her daughter and the moment she had settled her, Shivani said, “Well goodnight, come mom, I’m certain sister Prerna is tired, even Shena seems tired.”

Veena turned to look at Shivani in obvious confusion, stating, “See what I mean? While such concern is commending, she is just far too nervous.”

“I’m certain it is nothing mom, “ Prerna said, looking up from a sleeping Shena.

Veena suspiciously stated, “You seem better.”

“I feel better after my bath.”

“That is good,” Veena said turning to Shivani, “Well come along now.”

Prerna walked them to the door and with one hand closed and secured it. She turned back towards the bed and watched Anurag emerge then appear to dust himself off. Unable to contain the laughter bubbling inside, Prerna covered her mouth.

On noticing her shaking shoulders, Anurag demanded,“What’s so funny?”

Prerna tried to swallow her laughter, but then pointed to him, “You are?”

“What?” Anurag demanded.”

“I mean, technically, you're the son in law of the house, but you sneak about and hide like an illicit lover.”

Affronted Anurag demanded, “Illicid lover?”playfully adding, “Oh, so you have experience with this?” and started his approach.

“Anurag,” Prerna warned, holding her one hand outwith her index finger pointing skywards.

“No don’t start with…” he started on his approach but on noticing Shena stopped dead in his tracks, “Shena.” He again approached, but this time with a different intention as he came to stand besides her, instinctively reaching out to touch his daughter. He looked at Prerna and gestured. Prerna inclined her head only slightly while lowering her lashes, then allowed him to take Shena.

His entire being beamed with joy as he moved back towards the bed, whispering to Shena, “There’s daddy’s little sweetheart.”

Prerna happily watched them for several moments before a heavy oppressive wight again settled over her shoulders. She knew she should not allow it, should not allow him to develop a relationship with Shena, for it would only end in pain. Mohini would never accept them and she could not expect of him to choose… because she knew that Mohini would employ any and every manipulative ploy to separate them, and in the end it would be Shena that would be hurt.

She knew the joy a father brought in one’s life, she was lucky enough to have two father figures in her life, so she understood whata void there would be in Shena’s life if she grew up without a father.

Almost as if he sensed her thoughts, Anurag looked to her. A change in her stance, or possibly the manner in which she responded alerted him that something was amiss.

“Prerna?”

Prerna swallowed against the lump that had formed in her throat, then said, “You should leave.”

Anurag tilted his head, for only a moment and then lowered Shena onto the bed. He placed pillows around her and then turned to Prerna.

Without hesitation he pulled her into an embrace but could feel her resistance, since her body remained ridged. “Don’t do this Prerna. Don’t put distance between us.”

“I can’t do this anymore.” Prerna said pulling from his embrace, “I may have been able to handle your family’s issues, but Shena should not be made to suffer them. It would not be fair on her and you know your mother would never accept us.”Prerna said as she placed some distance between them before continuing, “I want her to know that there is more to her than her birthright, money and status in society.”

“And she will know that,” Anurag insisted.

“Not with your mother,” Prerna flatly stated, for once not caring as to what he thought, if she needed to make him hate her and her opinion of his family, she would do it to protect her daughter. Thus she continued, “Your mother will take pleasure from reminding Shena her entire life that she is the daughter of a middle class girl.” Prerna shook her head. “No,it is better if we end this now because there’s no way in which I can live in that house. I will also not subject my daughter to such taunts and limited mentality.” Prerna turned to Anurag and noticed his shocked expression, “Look I know she’s your mother, and that you love her. But we both know she will never accept me. We have been at this point often enough to know how this would be likely to end.” Anarag made to say something but Prerna shook her head and held up her hand, then continued, “How many times have you said you will handle your mother, that I should trust you to manage this? only for us to land right back here. “Your mother has told me to my face that she does not approve of me as a daughter in law – not once, several times. She will never accept us.”

“But we’re married, we would have been married with all of the rituals in front of everybody.” Anurag countered.

“No, we’re not.” Prerna said, shocking him.

“What do you mean? How can we not be married? I’ve seen our marriage licence.”

Prerna took a deep breath and said, “Yes, we are married, only ….” She hesitated for several moments and then said, “…it’s confusing”

“So Anupam tells me as well.” Anurag threw back.

“I don’t know how much you remember, or if this may even harm you, but if this will make you understand my decision then it is for the best.”

“What do you mean?” Anurag asked

“It means I will tell you what is relevant, even though I shouldn’t.”

Anurag gestured for her to continue.

“We never got married with full rituals because you went missing before we could complete them.”

With obvious disbelief Anurag asked, “I went missing on our wedding day?”

Prerna nodded but said, “Technically you married me the day before, but our social ceremony never took place.”

Obviously confused Anurag asked, “But how can our wedding be registered then?”

“I also questioned this after you told me, and the only reason that is even remotely plausible points to Rishabh.”

“What would Bajaj have to do with this?” Anurag demanded.

“Rishabh arranged our wedding,” Prena said, but on noticing the scepticism in Anurag’s expression she added, “I know it would be difficult for you to believe with only part of your memories, but he did.”

Anurag rubbed his eyes for a moment and then said,“don’t you think he would have been more likely to arrange for my disappearance?”

Prerna chose to let it slide, since she knew it would be futile to get into an argument with him about it when he had only part of his memories. Instead she said, “Bajaj had me sign a number of documents for our divorce, I think one of them may have been a marriage notification which could have been filed along with the divorce papers.”

“You didn’t check over the documents?” Anurag asked surprised.

“I had your attorney check them and he said they were fine.”

“So he’ll be able to confirm?” Anurag asked more to himself, Anurag then turned to Prena asking, “Do you think Bajaj would have done that?”

“Rishabh is very particular when it comes to such matters, so it would not surprise me.”

“Then I should thank him, I’ll try contact him in the morning.”

Drawing in a deep breath while fighting the sense ofpain she felt at simply the thought, she finally said the unavoidable, “Even if it were so, your family does not accept our marriage. So we may as well initiate divorce proceedings and end this.”

“No! Never!” Anurag instantly, and firmly decreed.“I will never divorce you.”

“Anurag?” She asked, hoping to appeal to his logical nature.

“Until the day I die, you will remain my wife.”

“That is not in our hands,”

“It is!” He insisted, then moved to take her shoulders encouraging her to look at him as he said, “Prerna, please, all I ask is that you trust me in this. I will arrange everything. Please, I will make things right.”

Prerna looked past him. She lifted both her hands only to allow them to drop again to indicate her displeasure at his request. She had trusted him so many times before, only to be hurt time and again.

“All I ask of you is that once all the arrangements are done, that you will come with me.”

“But every time we get to this point something happens, and I’m tired of it.”

“Things only happen when someone tries to come between us. I won’t let anyone or anything come between us again.”

“Your mother is already between us.”

“I will deal with her.” Anurag said pulling her into an hug, adding, “This is not just about us anymore.”

Prerna took courage from his words. Perhaps…just perhaps… this time things will work out.
