Anurag stood at the terminal, looking around. She’s late again. Why is she always late?

“Who are you looking for?” The sudden and unexpectedness of her question, startled him more than the actual realization that she was already there.

He turned to face her and asked, “Where were you?”

Prerna pointed behind her, “I just went to…” But she didn’t finish the sentence since he nodded and asked. “How’s the baby?”

“The baby is determined to sit as low as possible today, I think she knows we’re going to fly.”

“But everything is fine?” Anurag as good as demanded, his concern obvious.

Confused she asked, “Why wouldn’t it be?”

Anurag was stunned for a moment, not knowing how he should answer her. “I just… I’ve never flown with anyone who’s pregnant, sorry.”

“Never mind. They will be boarding soon, so we should go.” Prerna said.

Manoeuvring in the narrow and crowded passage in the middle of the plane was difficult for Prerna, but finally they made it to the first class section and could settle in their seats.

“Your first time flying?”

“First time to Mumbai.” Prerna replied.

Anurag had no idea what else to say to her. Yet at the same time felt comfortable with their shared silence. He noticed her pressing the palms of her hands against her eyes and realized that with the morning flight she would have had to get up earlier than usual.

“You can sleep once we are up in the air, I’ll wake you before we land.”

Prerna smiled and then teasingly replied, “And then miss the in-flight movie.”

“Are you really looking forward to the movie?” Anurag playfully replied.

“How else am I supposed to pass three hours in your company.” It was out before Prerna could stop it, and she quickly looked at him.

“I see you are still speaking without thinking.”

Prerna frowned at that, but then shook her head.

“What’s wrong? Why are you shaking your head?”

“You used to say that to me. I was just trying to remember if you actually said it when we were younger.”

“What do you mean I used to say it to you often.”

She looked at him for a moment poised to answer his question but then thought twice about it.

“No,please, tell me.”

“But…”

“If I’m asking you’re not forcing anything, so relax.”

“When we were at college together, whenever we got into trouble or if we argued about something, well perhaps not always, but often you would say that.”

“Did you often speak without thinking?” Anurag seriously asked.

“I used to be more carefree with what I said. And you were Anurag, I could say whatever I wanted to you.”

Anurag seriously asked, “What’s changed?”

“In a word, everything.” Prerna replied.

Anurag was prevented from answering as the flight attendants started their pre-flight safety session and preparations for take off as the aeroplane started taxiing towards the runway. The flight attendants secured everything and checked that all passengers had securely fastened their seat belts.

Prerna gripped her armrest as the aeroplane increased speed for takeoff. Anurag placed his hand over hers, causing her to look at him, “Relax, I’m right here, nothing’s going to happen to you.”

His fingers instinctively intertwined with hers, a tightening sensation settling around his heart as she moved her hand. He wanted to grip it to tell her to keep it in place, but was surprised when she turned her hand over and laced her fingers with his. He smiled as their eyes met. There was a flicker of hesitation in her eyes, which caused him to tighten his grip, hoping to reassure her.

Their hands remained that way until the hostess came to serve them their in-flight meal, and even then he reluctantly released his hold.

Prerna pushed her food around her plate, eventually giving up on consuming any of it.

“Have you eaten anything today?” Anurag asked when she indicated for the flight attendant to take her food away.

“No,I feel a bit nauseous.” Prerna said then turned to the flight attendant, “Can I have some water with lemon.” The flight attendant nodded and left them.

“It could be the altitude.”

“It’s fine Anurag, don’t worry about it. It will pass.”

The flight attendant returned with her water and Prerna thanked her after taking it,slowly sipping most of the contents before setting it down.

“You should take some rest. I can have them bring you a pillow.”

“Anurag, I’m pregnant not sick.”

Anurag had no idea how to react to that, so he let it slide.

It was about an hour into the flight when Prerna drifted off to sleep, something Anurag was eternally grateful for, since he could unabashedly look at her. There was a calmness, a serenity that filled him with the knowledge that she was comfortable enough to sleep around him. He lifted his hand to push aside the strand of hair that always seemed to fall across her face. Her skin was soft and glowing. She seemed so at peace. He instinctively reached for her hand, his fingers covering hers. He knew he should feel guilty, for she had no idea of the previous day’s events, no idea that he had sent Komolika packing yet again. Or what his intentions with the trip were.

He smiled, simply indulging in the simplistic of the moment.

About two-and-a-half hours into the flight, he saw her frown and shift in her sleep. He tightened his grip on her hand, uncertain whether it was that or her discomfort that brought her back to consciousness.

Prerna looked cute all sleepy and looked about her for a moment before asking, “How long did I sleep for?”

“We’ll land in about twenty minutes.”

Prerna shifted in her seat and rubbed her back

“Are you okay?”

“My back is a bit sore, but I’ve been in the same position for so long it’s to be expected.”

“You should move about then” Anurag said, but just then the announcement started to call all passengers back to their seats, to fasten their seat belts, as they would be starting their decent soon.

The air in the city was different to Kolkate, with more moisture and a faint tang of salt. Traffic was a nightmare, at times slowing to a crawl. After arriving at the hotel they were shown to a suite containing two bedrooms.

“But I had them book two separate rooms.” Prerna said as the porter showed them about the suite.

“I had them change it.” Anurag deadpanned.

“But why?” Prerna demanded.

“There’s two rooms here, so there’s nothing to worry about. I’ll deal with your husband’s issues should any arise. ”

“He’s not the problem, it’s your wife and your family that will have a problem with this.” Prerna stressed.

Anurag was uncertain as to what he should feel regarding her obvious dismissal of him. He knew that if she had been with anyone else, he would have… A flash crossed his mind for a moment, followed by an image of him setting a decorated bed alight. The image made no sense causing him to shake his head.

“What happened?” Prerna asked, concern lacing her voice.

“I think I remembered something, but it does not make any sense.” Anurag said gesturing to the rooms, “Pick one.”

“What?” Prerna asked, adding, “You should take the main bedroom.”

“It’s luck of the draw, I don’t mind either way which room I get.” But added to himself, You’re here with me, and that is all that matters right now.

Prerna picked the one to the right and moved her bag there. Anurag took his luggage to the second room. Unknowingly Prerna had chosen the main bedroom.

“We’ll leave for the showroom in about half an hour.” Anurag said just before entering his room.

The showroom was busy on their arrival, more so than Prerna had expected it to be over the weekend.

“So exactly what are we doing here?” Prerna asked as she glanced over the various displays.

“I’m thinking of remodelling my washroom and possibly the kitchen as well.”

“And your mother is going to allow that?” Prerna asked in surprise.

“Oh,no, it’s for a different house.” Anurag said.

Shocked Prerna asked, “You’re thinking of moving out with your wife?” Anurag thought over her words for some time, for the first time actually considering the option. But before he could reply Prerna added, “Don’t you think you should then have come with her? I mean I’m certain there is a world’s difference between my and her tastes.”

He had no way of answering, he had hoped to ease the conversation in that direction, but then that had never been easy with Prerna. He again frowned at the sudden thought, but then remembered his decision to accept such matters without question. His mind shifted to a possible excuse and then lied, “I haven’t decided on a place yet, I just wanted to have a look at what is available.” From the look on her face he could tell she did not believe him.

“Well should we start?” Prerna said moving off to the first display.

Anurag followed her, not really paying attention to what they were looking at, while trying to figure out her change in attitude.

Several displays later he asked, “Have you seen anything you like?”

Prerna looked at him in disbelief and said, “We’re not looking for me.”

“But you know me, I trust your judgement. If I had to ask any of the others I would get something showy,” Anurag said pointing to a display, adding, “It will end up something like that.”

Prerna turned to look at the display he was pointing at and said in disbelief, “Are you serious?”

“You know that my mother and Nivadita would get involved, and there will be no end to the flair they’ll include.”

“It’s just a washroom,” Prerna reasoned.

“So you can understand.” Anurag said.

“Do you have any Idea what you want?”

“I’m open to all suggestions.”

“I don’t know.”

For the following hour Anurag tried to get her involved, but somehow she always sidestepped making any decision. Finally resolving to baiting, he pointed to the most obscene things he could find, knowing she would not like them and suggest alternatives. I took just under an hour for him to establish which items she liked. It was when she once again rubbed her back that his guilt caught up with him. He had been so absorbed in what they were doing that he had forgotten that prolonged period on her feet could cause her discomfort.

“I think we are done here for now.” Anurag said, taking hold of her elbow and moving her towards the exit.

“But we’re not done yet,” Prerna countered.

“The rest can wait for tomorrow,” a determined Anurag said, “For now, you should take some rest and we will have dinner later. I was thinking of suggesting a stroll on the beach, but I think it would be too much right now.”

“Why?”Prerna demanded.

“Because I know your back is bothering you again.” He saw the confused expression on her face and added, “Do you really think I don’t notice such things?” Prerna then made to answer and he simply held up his hand, “Come let’s go.”

They returned to the hotel where he helped Prerna to her room, ensuring she was comfortable before returning to his own. A restlessness overtook him, that quickly developed into an agitated sense he simply could not shake or make sense of. If he tried to settle, even if only for a moment, it would drive him up. He wanted to be close to her, needed to be close to her. It grew to such an extent that it finally drove him from his room.

He would check up on Prerna, just to ensure she was fine. He pushed open the door to her room, only to stop dead in his tracks. She was standing next to the bed,her eyes pinched as she breathed deeply.

“Prerna!”He called in concern.

She held up her hand, took another deep breath and several moments to compose herself, before opening her eyes and stating, “I was coming to look for you.”

“What’s wrong?” he said making it to her side.

“I need to get to a hospital, I think the baby is coming.”

“I don’t know how you cannot see sense. That baby is not Anurag’s. I doubt Prerna even knows herself.”

Moloy visibly became angered and retorted, “A mother knows who the father of her child is. I have no reason to question Prerna, she’s like my own daughter. Would you question your daughters in such a manner?”

“My daughters don’t behave like Prerna.”

Oh no, hope that doesn't happen in the show. Moloy saying this would just ruin his character. Or was he being sarcastic?

ROFL, my daughter's don't behave like Prerna. One is a second copy of you Mohini and the other is a dope/background prop so they can't behave like Prerna.😆

I'm not sure if you're unaware but Anurag's surname is spelt 'Basu' and not 'Basso' ?

Anurag with four wives??? Hu, I only know of three. But then I count Prerna as one regardless of how many times they have been married. I then have Komilika and Somalika… Are you counting Mishka as well?

I was referring to the other season of Kasauti where he married four times.

“And who said that that is what Anurag wants?” Prerna challenged, her heart racing. She knew that she should not let the woman get to her, but there was just something in her manner that incited Prerna – ever since their first meeting.

“You’re the one who won’t let go of him.”

“And why should I give up something that is mine

Yes! This is what I like to see from Prerna, not giving up on Anurag, not letting go of Anurag. I was disappointed in the show when she said to Komolika, "I thought you were a nice girl so I stepped back."

“And what about the memories I don’t get back?”

“Perhaps they are best forgotten.”

Why does Prerna feel it's best that Anurag forgets his memories? I think it's because of the Bajaj track. Is it ? I believe the most hardest thing Anurag had went through was seeing Prerna living with Bajaj in his house.

Ooooh an Elizabeth Bennet and Catherine De Bourgh moment right there! Gotta love it.

He knew what needed to be done, it was only her feelings he had to be certain of, but he knew their baby would connect them forever. If anything, he took comfort from that fact.

“I just thought you would like to go with your wife.”

I am, he thought but instead replied, “She will be bored, it’s not the type of showroom and shopping she likes to do.”

That is so true and I agree. 😳The baby and their love. ❤️

“Well then she trapped me before I went missing.” Anurag said gesturing to the attorney. The man handed him a piece of paper, which Anurag held up, “According to this, our marriage was registered before I went missing.”

“But there was no ceremony.” Mohini bemoaned.

“That is something only Prerna can answer.” Anurag said.

I want a registered marriage for Anupre in the show. So glad to see this is the case in this fic. Yes, I am very very pleased.

The Basu family exclaimed various degrees of disbelief, as the police arrested her.

Komo letting herself get arrested with no drama? 😲 She's so polite. I was half expecting Mohini to scream at the top of her lungs like a wounded soldier.

I'm enjoying this!

Everything moved in slow motion. His sole focus was on getting her to the hospital to see to her needs. There was no time, space or thought for anything else. He helped her into the wheelchair the orderly produced once they arrived at the hospital, and accompanied her inside. The matron took one look at Prerna and pointed the orderly into a direction, at the same time capturing Anurag by the arm.

“I need to go with her,” Anurag urgently said.

“I’ve seen enough concerned fathers and births to be able to tell you you’re not going to miss anything right now.”

The matrons words had him look towards her in confusion.

“Well you are the father aren’t you?” The matron sternly demanded.

“Yes.”

She handed him a clipboard, “You have paperwork to complete, the nurses will see to your wife in the meantime.”

Anurag looked at the set of forms and hesitantly took the pen from the matron.

“Where are you from?” the matron asked.

“Kolkata” Anurag answered.

“Should have stayed home with your wife this far along.” The matron said.

“We didn’t know.”

“Her prenatal caregiver would have alerted her the moment the baby dropped that she was less than two weeks away.”

Anurag had no idea how to answer the woman, for Prerna had not mentioned anything to him… but then she had no reason to confide such a matter to him either. Instead he focused on the form and started filling in the details. It was not as difficult as he thought it would be, as long as he did not try to force any answers.

Once done, he handed the clipboard to the administrative officer and asked, “Where did they take my wife?”

The woman looked at him and then at the form, she made to say something however Anurag cut her short, “If there is anything missing you can find me with Prerna.”

“They would have taken her to one of the examination stations.”

“Where’s that?” Anurag demanded.

“Down that passage, turn left, the signs overhead will tell you where to go.”

“Thank you.”

Anurag followed the woman’s instructions and entered the examination section, anxiously calling out, “Prerna!”

A nurse appeared and asked, “Your wife is the lady in labour?”

Anurag nodded.

“She’s this way. They took her to attach the babyheart monitor.”

His heart leapt into his throat at just the thought that something could be wrong. “What for?” Anurag anxiously demanded.

“They just want to ensure that the baby is not in distress.”

“And if it is?” Anurag quickly demanded,

“They will move her to the operating theatre for a caesarean.”

Anurag followed the nurse into one of the private rooms, “Prerna!” He called on entering and rushed to her side.

Anxiously she replied, “Anurag.” The apprehension in her tone troubled him.

“What’s wrong, is everything okay?” He instinctively asked, checking her over as if expecting something obvious had gone wrong.

Distraught she said, “Anurag, I have nothing here for the baby. Everything’s at home.”

Anurag instantly relaxed and reached for her face, pushing her hair out of the way as he said, “Don’t worry about that Prerna, I’ll get whatever the baby needs. I’m certain the hospital could provide me with a list.” Anurag looked towards once of the nurses, who eagerly nodded in response.

Just then the thumping sound drew his attention, “Is that the baby’s heartbeat?” he asked, looking towards the machine.

Prerna started to nod but then gasped and pinched her eyes shut, moaning slightly.

“What’s the matter?” he quickly demanded, looking towards the nurse.

“The contractions are closer now.” The nurse calmly answered.

“So everything is still okay?”

“Yes, but there’s still a long way to go.”

Anurag watched as another contraction took hold and gripped Prerna’s hand, unknowing what else to do. Her grip loosened the moment the contraction passed, causing him to turn to the nurse and ask, “Can’t you give her something for the pain.”

“If the doctors give her painkillers too soon, it can stop the contractions. So we have to wait until she is fully dilated.”

For two hours Anurag sat with Prerna, holding her hand, rubbing her back and feeding her ice chips, while at the same time feeling utterly helpless. He had no idea who was actually more thankful when the doctors declared that she could finally receive painkillers. He exited the examination area, the doctors having dismissed him while they prepare Prerna fort he shift to the delivery room. He walked down the passage, his skin feeling a size too small as he ran his hands over his face. He pinched his lips allowing his hands to curl into fists.

Away from, her he could finally relent to the helplessness he felt. He pushed his back against the wall and swallowed several times before pushing his head back against t he wall and pinching eyes. He knew he had to remain strong, but he hated to see her in so much pain.

“Sir,” A voice called his attention.

Anurag looked up to see once of the nurses holding a cup out to him. Hesitantly he took it, checking to only find water. He took a sip and then asked, “How much longer will this take?”

“It goes pretty quickly from this point on.”

Shocked, Anurag looked towards the room and was about to move off when the nurse said, “Not that quick. They will bring her out soon.”

A few minutes later a group of people escorted a walking Prerna from the room.

“Are they crazy?!” Anurag exclaimed rushing to her side. “Prerna.” He then looked towards the nurse who encouraged her on and demanded, “What do you think you’re doing?”

“Your wife is already tired, this might speed up things.”

Anurag moved with them as they slowly worked their way along the passage. The matron showed them into a larger, warmer room lined with equipment.

“Why is it so hot in here?” Anurag asked. Looking around.

“It has to be, the baby is coming out of a warm environment.”

Anurag helped Prerna settle on the bed and watched as the nurse prepared things.

The matron gestured to him and said, “You need to go put on a cover.”

Anurag looked at her in confusion, asking,“Cover,”

The sister pointed to her coveralls, “If you are going to be present for the birth.”

Anurag looked at the woman as if she had gone mad, there was no way he would miss out on the birth of his child, “Where?” he demanded.

“Through that door, they will help you.”

Anurag returned and again took hold of Prerna’s hand. She was visibly tired and he squeezed her hand. He bent over and pressed his forehead against hers and whispered, “I’m right here, I’m not going anywhere.”

He felt her grip on his hand tighten momentarily before the matron introduced the midwife. The woman may as well had been speaking gibberish for all he understood, but Prerna seemed to understand and replied when needed.

Her grip on his hand tightened and was held for a period of time, before being released. The women around him seemed to have their own system of communication, for they calmly went about the process while he had no idea what was going on, whether everything was progressing normally or if Prerna should be as worn out at that stage.

“Put your chin to your chest next time,” the midwife instructed Prerna, “…and breathe out.”

He felt the grip on his hand intensify once again. Prerna’s chin pressed into her chest and her entire body stiffened again and then went totally lax.

“Prerna!” Anurag anxiously called standing upright.

Just then a wail filled the room followed by the midwife’s declaration, “It’s a girl.”

Uncertain of what he should do or whom he should go to, Anurag looked from Prerna the where the sister lifted the little body away from Prerna. He felt Prerna’s hand momentarily tighten against him, causing him to look at her.

She moved her head, the gesture as familiar to himas her name and said, “Go.”

He hesitantly looked after the nurse. It was only once Prerna released his hand that he moved away.

She was the smallest human being he’s ever seen. The nurses and midwife were taking measurements and noting things down, while the baby’s arms moved about, her legs pulled up.

Anurag anxiously asked, “Is she okay?”

“She’s fine, five and a half pounds. We’ll clean her and take her to her mother when we’re done.”

Anurag turned to look at Prerna, only to notice that like the baby she had several nurse around her. Instinctively he moved towards Prerna but one of the nurses stopped him. She handed him a folded piece of paper and said, “This is what the baby needs, there is an all night pharmacy in the front. Make sure that all of the baby’s clothing has been washed to remove all the starch and fabric treatments. Her skin is delicate and won’t tolerate the chemicals found on new clothing.”

“But Prerna,” Anurag said but was cut short when the nurse lifted her hand to stop him.

“Your wife needs to rest now more than anything else. We’re here to ensure both her and the baby are cared for.”

“But…” Anurag started as the woman escorted him to the door.

“Go and tell everyone about the baby’s arrival.” The nurse said as she jostled him out the door.

Anurag was confused and stood looking at the door.

“Don’t worry about it. There’s a series of medical procedures they have to finish and you’ll only get in the way.” A voice to the side of him said. He turned to look at the woman, only to see a young doctor perusing a file. She smiled at him before closing the file she was reading. “Go get some rest, it will be the last full night’s rest you will get for sometime.” She said before stepping past him and entering the room he’d just been expelled from.

He actually had no idea what he was feeling as he checked the time. Somehow he had imagined he would be more excited, but all he felt was confusion. He had intended to tell her that he knew he was the baby’s father, but now the baby was here and he knew she would distance them from him. He could handle anything but Prerna’s indifference of him and he knew he would have to mitigate circumstances before she could manage to extract them from the situation.

He pulled his phone out of his pocket and scanned through his contact list, uncertain as to whom he should tell the news to. Mom,the thought crossed his mind only for him to hesitate. If his mother knew that the baby had been his, why then had Prerna left their home, especially since he had conformation that they had been legally married. Then there was the manner with which his mother had welcomed Komolika into the home again. The had far too many question that needed clarification. Dad? He thought, knowing that Prerna and his father had always shared a close relationship, he had also sensed some agitation between his parents as of late, with his father not quite as willing to deflect tense moments by teasing his mother. He suspected that Prerna could be the reason for it. He pressed the call button and hoped that his father was still awake.

“Anurag?” Moloy’s hesitant question came across the line several moments later.

“Dad,” Anurag said but then grew quiet when he heard his mother’s concerned voice in the background. “What’s happened with my Anu? I knew he should not have gone anywhere with that girl, she always causes him trouble.”

He heard his father’s stern rely to that, “Could he first tell me why he’s phoned, before you draw any such conclusions.” His father’s words caused Anurag to frown, especially since he could only remember his father being amiable towards his mother. His father then continued, “Why are you calling so late Anu?”

Anurag for a moment thought over the reason for his call, and instantly his chest swelled with both pride and joy. “You’re a grandfather?”

“What? Really?” His father’s stunned reply came over the line, “Did Prerna have her baby?”

His father’s response answered outright a question that had been in his mind for some time already, and highlighted the fact that they had knew the baby was his. The incredulity he felt at their actions quickly morphed into anger. His disbelief that they could do something like that to Prerna only added fuel. Yet he fought his instinctive response and said, “She’s just had a baby girl.”

“A girl, that’s wonderful!” his father enthused, and then added, obviously to Mohini, “Prerna’s had a little girl.” His father then said to him, “Is everything okay? Is she beautiful like her mother? When can we see them?” Anurag remained sceptical of his father’s sincerity, just as he had become weary of so many things at home.

“Could you tell everyone that side?” Anurag asked, not wanting to engage too much into a conversation he had few answers for.

With obvious happiness colouring his voice his father said, “I’m going to distribute sweets everywhere… I’m a grandfather! A little girl.”

His father’s enthusiasm had Anurag smile as he said,“Dad, I still have to let Mrs Sharma know. So please tell everyone there.”

“Yes, yes I’ll do that son.”

Moloy ended the call with a huge smile on his face as he turned to Mohini, “Did you hear that a baby girl.”

“Now we’ll never be rid of that girl, and what was the need for her to go with him to Mumbai?”

“Mohini, did you not hear that, we have a granddaughter.”

“That … that… That child is no granddaughter of mine.”

Moloy was insistently angered and glared at his wife, then retorted, “Well she is and you had better get used to it. He then got out of bed and started fro the door.

Distraught Mohini demanded, “Where are you going?”

“I’m Going to go and tell everyone the good news, then I’m going to order sweets for everyone, I’m a grandfather. Hopefully the next one is a boy.” He said leaving the room.

Moments later he knocked on Nivedita’s door. It was several minutes before Anupam opened the door. The man tilted his head before asking, “What is it Father in law?”

“I came to give you the most wonderful news, Prerna had her baby.”

“Are you serious?” Anupam said, immediately attentive as he turned to look back into their room, eagerly calling, “Did you hear that Nivi? You’re an aunt!”

“What?” Nivedita said, also approaching the door.

“Yes,” Maloy said as she joined them, eagerly pointing to her as he continued, “You are an aunt. Anupam is a uncle. And I,I’m a grandpa.” Moloy said finally pointing to himself proudly.

“Dad, what are you saying?” Nivedita asked.

“Anurag just called, Prerna had her baby. It’s a girl.”

“What! Really?” Nivedita said in surprise, but then grew skeptical, finally asking, “But Anurag is in Mumbai, how would he know.”

“Because Prerna is with him.”

“What?” Nivedita asked in shock, “But… This cannot be good for him.”

“He seemed perfectly fine when he spoke to me.”

“Now I’m worried, Where is my phone? He should not have gone without one of us present.”

“Anurag is fully grown Nivi. Besides he’s with Prerna.”
