Chapter 14:

Rishab ordered his chauffeur to go to Kukki's school. He couldn't believe it. After everything that had happened...everything that he did, Prerna's first thought was to go for a substitute teacher job at Kukki's school. According to her mother, apparently it was immediate hire and she needed to do something quickly. Veena and Rishab both knew there was more to it than that. Prerna could go for a full-time teacher's job easily with her degree, but she went for whatever was available at Kukki's school.

Rishab sighed. Her mother was right. He didn't deserve her at all.

When he approached the school, Rishab still had no plans. He didn't know what to say to her if he met her. He just sped down the main hall toward the admissions office.

The door opened as soon as he was about to touch the doorknob and he came face to face with Prerna.

Her face registered momentary shock before she side-stepped him and walked slowly down the hallway.

Prerna's heart plunged when she saw him. Was he here for her, was her first thought, but she dismissed it. She figured he just came to see Kukki. There was nothing left to talk about. They were strangers now, she was moving on with her life. If he was in the habit of abandoning her over and over, including in his office, she was not going to test and see how he could diminish her here.

Rishab rushed up behind her and declared abruptly: You can't work here!

Prerna quietly looked in his direction, ignored him, and walked out of the school.

Rishab: Please listen a moment!

Prena turned around in the ground outside and finally addressed him: Stay away from me.

Rishab took an embarrassed step back, struck by her words: Please, you can't work now.

Prerna: You don't get to tell me what to do, you never did, Mr. Bajaj. Now please keep your distance from me, I cannot be seen with you.

She was calling him by his formal name again. In the last few days, she had kept to her promise of calling him Rishab when it was just the two of them. It thrilled him like it was their own little secret. She respected him enough to call him by his formal name in public and by his first name privately - if he stopped smoking. But all that had changed. This new, cold Prerna was putting distance between them again.

Rishab, hurt: Whyever not?

Prerna angrily: Because! I am here as a job candidate and you are a donor here. So it will look like you are influencing my candidacy.

Rishab scoffed: That's the last thing I will do. In fact, I will discourage them from hiring you. You can't work in this condition, it is not safe.

Prerna spat out: I already have the offer, try and take it back. I will sue.

Rishab sighed: Please don't be difficult.

Prerna: I am an independent, adult, single female (Rishab looked away, downcast). You don't get to tell me what to do! You may have deluded yourself into thinking you could when we were married, but you certainly don't get a chance anymore. Now, please leave me alone.

Rishab placed his hand in her way to stop her from walking off.

Rishab calmly: I am not telling you, I am requesting you, please think of your health. You told me to stop smoking for my health and I listened, didn't I? You cannot do this commute everyday in your condition, especially not in public transportation. It's dangerous!

His words reached deaf ears as she went and stood at the local bus stop.

Prerna was getting more and more frustrated as he followed her all the way to the waiting area. Fortunately there was no one there in the middle of the day as everyone was at work. They were not creating entertainment for anyone, but by god, Rishab was getting irritating. He hovered around as she was forced to wait for the bus. She sat down and ignored him as he kept trying to tell her about the dangers of traveling alone on busy buses.

Prerna looked at her watch. That was the difference between rich and poor, they poor didn't get to dictate when they went somewhere. She felt irritated with herself for having gotten used the the comforts of having a fleet of cars always at her disposal. As the clock ticked away, she let the silence between them grow thick in hopes of making him leave.

Rishab pierced through it after a little time: Did you tell Mr. Basu you are working like this? (She glared at him) I think he will agree with me. It's not safe for you. And besides, you should both think of the baby.

Prerna retorted: I am thinking of the baby, both my babies! That's why I am working here. Now leave me alone, Mr. Bajaj, go back to the office.

Rishab was surprisingly silent for a moment. When she looked back, he was smiling.

Rishab softly: You are having twins?

Prerna: I am not having twins! I was talking about this baby and Kukki, I divorced you, not her!

Rishab thought he saw Prerna say moron under her breath. It made him smile, he wasn't the stranger to her that she seemed to want to depict.

Rishab: That's very kind of you to consider Kukki. I know you came here to get more time with her, I am very grateful.

Prerna didn't say anything, she was staring straight ahead, but her eyes watered. She blinked hard. Rishab sighed, that's what made her a natural mother for Kukki. Prerna loved hopelessly. He wished things could have been different, he wished he could have had the chance to know her before Anurag came into her life. Things could turn out so differently then.

Rishab: Look, these public buses...they have hard breaks and there is barely enough standing space. In your condition...

Prena interrupted: I am not the only pregnant woman in this country who uses public transportation. Maybe you are too far removed from this world now to understand, Mr. Bajaj, but I have done this all my life. I can manage. Now please get back to your work and leave me on my own. You got what you wanted. I don't ever want to see you again.

Rishab gasped. She really did know exactly how to hurt him.

Rishab grimly: If you won't listen to me, I am going to have to ask Mr. Basu to talk sense to you.

Prerna strode toward him and had him back up against the bus stop: Do you listen!? You are not to interfere in my private life again! You and Anurag both will stay out of it. It is no business of yours what I do and you don't get to go tell another man to step in to tell me what to do either! Now leave from here before I call the police on you for harassing me.

Rishab stunned, said in a soft hurt voice: Harassing you?

Prera: Yes, when a stranger follows a person around unwanted it is called harassment! So (she pointed at his Maybach parked nearby), please.

Rishab straightened defensively: Call them. What will they do, arrest me to standing next to my wife? The divorce is not finalized.

Prerna snapped back: It is for me!

Rishab: I didn't sign it yet.

Prerna: I did and as far as I am concerned, it's a done deal. You can take your time with your signatures for all I care.

Rishab sheepishly: Mehra showed me this morning that I forgot to sign after you left. Perhaps, I unconsciously didn't want to and...

Prerna in disgust: So that's what happens when you are used to divorcing one too many times, you casually just forget. It falls down the priority list of the great Mr. Bajaj's roster! (When she looked at him her eyes were shining) Thanks for showing me my place in your life again. You really outdid yourself there.

She mocked clapped as he tried to take in all her jabs as well as he could muster.

Rishab brokenly: That's not what I meant, I-I won't delay if your wedding is coming soon. You are right, I am just a twice divorced man now, you can judge me if you want. But I only came to request that you don't work in your condition. Yes, I may have no right, but I came to request for your sake and for Kukki's sake because she cares about you. I was concer-(Prerna hopped up on the bus that stopped quickly and it sped away).

Rishab quickly flagged it down. He jumped in to see her balancing herself at the back, squashed and standing between two burly men who were eyeing her up and down with open curiosity. She was only dressed in a simple, batik print Bengali sari, and she had nothing in terms of jewelry. But she was one regal looking woman, naturally gorgeous, and very noticeable with her flowing hair. He knew how men saw her.

Rishab pushed through and blocked the two leechers. Prerna glared at him. Rishab asked a sitting young man to give her a seat.

Prerna whispered angrily: Are you out of your mind!? Get out!

Rishab: I will see you safely home. Now scoot over and give me a seat.

She sat down and ignored him the rest of the ride, choosing to look out the window instead. She was not going to make a scene on the crowded bus.

Prerna walked into her house and shut the door on Rishab's face. He finally left.

Prerna, Suman bhabi, and ma were having tea that evening.

Veena: Rishab aya tha.

Prerna: Yes, I know, he showed up at the school too.

Bhabi chipped in: Oh, why? Does he want you back!?

Prerna: He wanted to tell me not to work and wanted to know about my wedding plans with Anurag.

Bhabi rolled her eyes: Men are so stupid sometimes. You literally signed the divorce papers with him less than 24 hours ago. He really thinks you will move on overnight?

Prerna: And he apparently forgot to sign the divorce papers on his own behalf. He made sure he came and told me that on top of sanctimoniously telling me why I can't work and use public transportation. How did he find out anyway?

Veena: You accidentally applied to one of his affiliated companies.

Prerna covered her face: Oh god. That was so stupid of me! I have to check which one it was. R. Bajaj companies do background checks, that's probably how they found out about my relationship with him. Otherwise, I had just used my maiden name. It's so hard to trace the ownership of these places.

Rishab stared at her empty bed. He had made a right mess of things like Prerna's mom said. He prayed that Prerna would soon move on with Mr. Basu and put an end of her charade of being a vigilante, pregnant commuter lady. As for him, he could shelve this experience behind one of his many dark experiences in life and move back to Mumbai as soon as Kukki could be convinced.

His precious little Kukki, she is been so heartbroken lately over Prerna. But...if he brought up the move up too soon, would Prerna kill him on the school grounds in broad daylight? Probably. That could take him out of his misery and Kukki would be in good hands with her mom, he thought flippantly. He would have to make that move a little slowly. If Prerna ended up working the school, Kukki would certainly kick up a fuss about leaving.

Prerna's cosmetics were still by the bedside. She didn't take them cause they were bought by him. He sat down slowly on her side of the bed and sprayed some of her perfume on the pillow. Rishab put his head down and took in her fragrance. He fell asleep with dreams of a different life.

When Prerna got out of Sharma house the next morning to get to work, she found one of Mr. Bajaj's cars waiting outside. Amir came out and greeted her.

Amir: Maam, sir said I am to take you to school and stay with you everyday. Ritesh will come take over for evenings when I leave.

Prerna Uski koi zaroorat nehi hai, Amir Saab. Please go back. Mein thik hoon.

Amir: Sir said you would protest. He said to tell you that if I went back without having done my job each day, he would let me go. So, please maam.

Prerna: Amir Saab, I am sorry your sir is being such a jerk, but he's not going to fire you over this. It's just his inconsiderate way of getting his way. Please go home. I am fine.

She went and struggled with other morning commuters into a bus despite Amir's protests.

Amir texted Mr. Bajaj.

Prerna missed a step on her dissent from the bus and fell right on to someone getting on.

Prerna: I am so sorry, sir I...oh for God's sake Mr. Bajaj!

Rishab holding her: I see you are handling yourself very well.

She shoved him away and gathered herself: That's enough. I am going into the school, do NOT follow me in there.

Prerna walked a couple of steps and looked around. Sure enough, he was right behind her.

Rishab smiled: Like you said, I am a donor here. I can check-in whenever I want.

Prerna growled and walked away.

Rishab enjoyed his view from behind. With her simple white sari, Prerna had on a beautiful yellow blouse with a bow around the back. It was an elegant, summery look on his blooming bride.

Someone whistled at her. Rishab jerked around. Prerna stopped for a second, looked at the boys playing in the basketball court and kept walking.

There was the whistling again. Rishab spotted them now, a bunch of Class 9 or 10 boys. They scrammed when he stated walking in their direction. Rishab made a note to speak to the principal about this.

Rishab: Kids these days. And this is what you want to deal with in school each day?

Prerna: I will just dress more conservatively from tomorrow.

Rishab angrily: That won't help. You will still look as you do. And to those newly minted young men you will still be their hot, new teacher.

Prerna cocked her eyebrows: I can handle myself.

Bajaj angrily when she turned to leave: You are more troublesome now than when we were married!

Prerna shot back: Then stop following me around!

Bajaj frustrated: Not if you continue like this. Why can't you just get married, take care of yourself, and live happily? I am not saying don't work, but you can wait until after the baby.

Prerna walked up to him and was standing nose to nose with him now: I was, you moron, but you took that from me.

Rishab flayed for answer: I mean...with (he couldn't bring himself to say the man's name) him.

Prerna: For the last time, I am not going back to Anurag. He deserves to start fresh after my betrayal. Speaking of which, why don't you go on your merry way and do the same?

Bajaj: It's because of me. You betrayed him because of me, let me tell him please. Don't go sacrificing yourself again just for his happiness.

Prerna: No. I am not sacrificing, I am just being fair.

Bajaj: It's his child, he deserves to know.

Prerna: You think I haven't considered that? It's best that he doesn't know. But don't worry. You won't be saddled with the blame either. This will just be my baby. And if anyone asks you, do as you did before, tell them another lie and say that I cheated on you and you have no idea whose baby this is. I don't mind, what's one more kalank anyway? They all talk about how I am a stupid woman for leaving you anyway. Now I can be a characterless one too.

She turned to leave, but Rishab grabbed her hand and turned her around.

Rishab angrily: That is enough! Is that what you are planning now? Who spoke about you that way, tell me.

Prerna spat: And what will you do, cut off their tongue!? You started it with the newspaper article!

Rishab was shocked into silence: I didn't realize...

Prerna: Yes, yes, you didn't realize. Maybe you aren't the great business magnate you thought you were cause you certainly didn't consider every possibility here. Or you just didn't care.

Rishab: Don't say I didn't care. All I did was care about you. I-I made a mistake.

Prerna sarcastically: Trust me, that wasn't the only mistake you made.

She wrung her wrist out of his grip and walked inside the school.

Thoughts? Too long of a torture for Rishab?

Another lovely update.

You know I should feel bad for him, but no, I am actually liking this Prerna who doesn't give any importance to him. He really needs a reality check after all the crap he did in name of freeing her from this so-called forced marriage deal. See she got to know that he didn't sign on the divorce papers, but it didn't affect her. She is done once she signed the papers.

So, she is teaching in Kukki's school. And he doesn't want her to do it so that Kukki will forget her. It's not that simple to forget Prerna for Kukki. He should start to understand that. I am happy that she is firm on her decision without listening to him, either by travleling in a bus cutting him off or not using the car he sent her. He made of scene out of her because of the newspaper article. And he needs to know what all she had to listen and go through because of that.

The best, I loved when she said this to him "I was, you moron, but you took that from me. ".

Let's see how he will mend his mistakes and how he makes her listen to him. Please continue soon.
