'Kasautii Zindagii Kay' is an Indian Hindi daily soap opera from Balaji Telefilms on Star Plus. In India, it plays in the prime time slot, which is between 8:30 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.. Kasautii Zindagii Kay first aired in 2001.

The sopa opera begins as the love story between two young adults, Prerna Sharma played by Shweta Tiwari and Anurag Basu played by Cezzane Khan. Anurag is the handsome, soft-spoken son of a rich, loving father - Moloy Basu. Moloy is a good-natured, large-hearted man. His wife Mohini, on the other hand, is arrogant and manipulative. Prerna is the daughter of Moloy's best friend, Rajesh. She is a girl of traditional values, but modern aspirations.
Because of Moloy and Rajesh's friendship, Anurag and Prerna become closer and closer, and eventually confess their love to another. Unfortunately, Mohini has other plans - she forcibly marries Anurag to Komollika while her husband Moloy is in a coma and his friend Rajesh has died, thus destroying Moloy's and Rajesh's dream of uniting Prerna and Anurag. Prerna, now pregnant with Anurag's child, is shocked at what she believes is Anurag's treachery. And now, she seeks only revenge against the wrongs she has faced. And so, she succeeds in moving into the same social level as Anurag. Meanwhile, Anurag, unable to love Komollika, sleeps with her when he is drunk at holi, and she becomes pregnant. But, she aborts her child under the pretense that her life is at stake if she gives birth to it. Then, her true nature is revealed to the Basu family as she is seen 'dazzling' the crowd with her mini skirts at pujas and her rude manners; they also come to know she had married Anurag for his money.
Eventually, Anurag divorces Komollika (who eventually marries and then divorces Anurag's younger brother Subroto) and engages Prerna, who now has a son Prem that everyone has come to know about (previously, it was said that her son Prem was actually her nephew). Everything is going perfectly, but enter business man Mr. Bajaj. He falls deeply in love with Prerna and, subsequently, takes over Basu Publications, Anurag's and Moloy's dream. He tells Prerna that he will ruin the Basus if she does not marry him. She agrees and thus gives the ultimate sacrifice for her love. Prerna also gives Prem to Anurag so that he will not be lonely. Meanwhile, Prerna finds out that Mr. Bajaj has three children (Vishaka, Tushar, and Kuki), the first two of which are her age. Although Vishaka and Tushar are at first spoiled young adults carelessly spending their father's money, she succeeds in winning over their love. She even gives Kuki, a blind girl, her eyesight back.
But, then Meneka (Mr. Bajaj's first wife) enters, and she wants her family back. When she is unsuccessful in wooing Mr. Bajaj (who is head over heels in love with Prerna), she calls him to Australia, where she fakes his death. When Prerna learns of Mr. Bajaj's death, she is shocked, even though she did not love him. Meneka and others convince Prerna to now marry Anurag, and she obliges. But then, Mr. Bajaj comes back to India and wants his wife back. He tries to cause problems between Prerna and Anurag, and he largely succeeds. Because of a misunderstanding that results in Prem's death, Prerna and Anurag separate. But, before their divorce, Prerna finds out that she is pregnant. However, Anurag believes that the child is Mr. Bajaj's. Mr. Bajaj has changed with Prerna's love and Prem's death, as he regarded Prem as his own son. However, he supports Prerna as a true friend and regards her newborn child, Sneha, as his own. Anurag, meanwhile, marries Aparna, a childhood friend of his sister's. After much tension between the four characters, Prerna finally decides that she cannot live in the same city as Anurag. Giving Aparna the red dupatta that symbolizes her love for Anurag, she, Mr. Bajaj, Vishaka, Tushar, Kuki, and Sneha all move away.
Here, the serial jumps forward eight years. Mr. Bajaj and Prerna live together as friends, and Prerna helps out in the business and at home. Everyone is happy, but then, it is found that Sneha has leukemia. Nobody's bone marrow matches hers, not even Prerna's. Desperate, Mr. Bajaj and Prerna beg Anurag to donate his bone marrow to Sneha. Although he gets tested, his bone marrow does not match either. But, Aparna comes to know that Anurag is Sneha's father, and when Anurag finds out, he is shocked and guilt-ridden. But, Sneha knows only Mr. Bajaj as her father. Mr. Bajaj also loves her with all his heart, and so, as time is running out, he tells Prerna to go back to Anurag temporarily, as only Sneha's sibling could have the same bone marrow. For Sneha, Aparna allows Prerna and Anurag to conceive another child. While Prerna is pregnant with this child, Aparna shows her true colors when she kills Anurag on Karvachauth day. But, then Aparna starts seeing Anurag as a ghost, wearing blood-stained clothes and appearing only when she is around. Later, it is found that Aparna's boyfriend Debu actually saves Anurag's life. He only supports Aparna because he has a son, Shravan, with her, whom he has never met. Prerna finds out Anurag is alive and helps him seek revenge on Aparna. When Mr. Bajaj finds out that Anurag is alive and Prerna knew about it, he thinks she faked grieving for the 'deceased' Anurag. He feels disgusted and breaks off his relationship with Prerna.
Anurag and Prerna finally succeed in getting Aparna's confession. But, she runs away from the hands of the police, killing Devu first for his treachery. As a result, Debu, who sees Anurag as his older brother, gives his son Shravan over to Anurag. And then, while Aparna is trying to kill Prerna, Aparna's car goes over the very cliff that Aparna had once supposedly thrown Anurag off of. Prerna gives birth to her child, who she also names Prem in remembrance of her first child. Meanwhile, Meneka's sister, who has been living with Mr. Bajaj and Prerna for quite some time, sleeps with Mr. Bajaj while he is drunk. But, as Mr. Bajaj does not love her, he removes himself from her, and soon, Mr. Bajaj and Prerna also patch up, as Prerna now truly loves Mr. Bajaj, who supported her through all her hardships. After their marriage, Sneha receives bone marrow from Prem, and her life is saved. Later, Prerna becomes pregnant with Mr. Bajaj's daughter. Unfortunately, during her baby shower, Komollika kidnaps Prem, who Anurag had foolishly handed to her. Prerna, now hating Anurag, tells him to leave forever, and he complies, going to London with Shravan.
Here, the serial takes another leap of twenty years. Prerna has a daughter with Mr. Bajaj named Kasak, and she is in love with Shravan, who has come back with Anurag from London. Unfortunately, Komollika is also back, and she tells Shravan that it was Prerna and Anurag who killed off Aparna and Devu together. Komollika also sends a fake Prem to dishonestly appease Prerna and Anurag, but this plan is also found out. Unfortunately, this fake Prem ends up marrying Anurag's niece, but this plotline was not further developed. Meanwhile, Tanisha, Madawi's daughter, has also fallen in love with Shravan. Together, she and Komollika are successful in separating Shravan and Kasak, as Shravan leaves Kasak on the day of their marriage to go marry Tanisha for revenge against Anurag and Prerna. Meanwhile, Prerna and Anurag send Komollika to a mental asylum, as they had found out that she never had Prem - Prem was kidnapped from her shortly after she had kidnapped him from Anurag.
Unfortunately, Kasak is now pregnant with Shravan's child, reminding Prerna of her own situation twenty eight years ago. Although Prerna requests that Kasak abort the child, Kasak finds out that Prerna gave birth to her illegitimate child Prem, so Kasak refuses. On the day of the prom Shravan confesses to Kasak that he still loves her and was about to tell her why he couldn't marry her but Sneha came and sent Kasak home. Sneha comes back to the prom to tell Shravan to stay away from Kasak but 3 boys from the party come out to get revenge on shravan for hitting them while they were talking horribly to Kasak. Sneha hits one of the boys with a club and Mr Bajaj saw all this but Sharavan tells Sneha to go. Eventually the police come but Shravan is accused of attempting to murder. the boys friends are tos cared to tell and Bajaj is the only eye witness and still gets a lawyer for Sneha's side. As fate will have it, Shravan one day accidentally bumps into Kasak, who falls down a flight of stairs and then has a miscarriage. Then, Aparna comes back, and Shravan completely leaves Anurag to live with his mother.
Aparna creates misunderstandings between Anurag and Mr. Bajaj, and Anurag, in a moment of weakness, confesses that he would like to kill Mr. Bajaj for taking his daughter and true love from him. And then, he crashes into Mr. Bajaj's and Prerna's car because Aparna had gotten his brakes failed. Prerna loses her memory and Mr. Bajaj slips into a coma. Long story short, Prerna regains her memory and, believing that Anurag wants to kill Mr. Bajaj, pretends to still have lost her memory (which has sent her twenty years back) and pretends to murder Mr. Bajaj. She sends Anurag to jail, but then finds out that he was innocent. When she helps Anurag out of jail, Mr. Bajaj is disgusted. But then, when Aparna reveals herself, the Basus and the Bajajs are close once again to fight this new terror. But she comes with a strength - Prem, who is known as Yudi. Prem believes that Prerna and Anurag conceived him and then threw him out into the streets.
Prem's friend Sharad ends up marrying Sneha. And, he helps Prerna by getting Prem to sign a contract saying that Prem has to live with Prerna for thirty days, or else he will lose all his money. He complies but tries to do everything possible to get kicked out of the house. He even reveals Mr. Bajaj's illegitimate child with Madawi - Tanisha. But Prerna will not leave Mr. Bajaj and will not let Prem leave her. Meanwhile, Mukti (Prerna's driver's daughter, who Prerna regards as her own daughter) enters the show as Sneha and Kasak's friend. She and Prem have constant arguments, but once, Prem tells his friend to trick her into his love . . . Prerna finally kicks Prem out of her house, but now Aparna will not give him a home as he does not have any money. Thus, he goes back to Prerna as a changed man, during which time Mukti also falls in love with him. But, Aparna makes it appear that Prem is actually still with her, so Prerna throws Prem out of the house again. When Prerna finds out the truth, it is too late - Prem comes back to Prerna, but he now is even more evil than before.
In a moment of weakness, Prem and Mukti sleep together. Prem thinks nothing of it, though, and Mukti meanwhile finds out that he is still after property. At a party, Mukti is drugged and brutally raped, and she immediately accuses Prem, who had said he would make her life miserable if she told Prerna that Prem was still after Mr. Bajaj's property. But, this was only a misunderstanding, as Mukti finds that the rapist is actually her best friend Sneha's husband - Sharad. Although at first no one believes her, Prerna comes to know the truth and support her, and so does the woman who is now in Anurag's life as a possible love interest - Sampada, aka Sam.
With Prerna's support, Mukti files a court case against Sharad, which shocks everyone. Mr. Bajaj, Anurag, Sneha and all else are pitted not only against Mukti but also Prerna and the delicate relationships they have are once again tested. Mr. Bajaj's brother Mahesh is called on by Mr. Bajaj to defend Sharad and during their conversation in private, Sharad reveals to Mahesh that he has indeed raped Mukti. Mahesh is shocked but feeling that he can not let Mr. Bajaj or Sneha know, or the shock might cause great distress, decides that he will aide Sharad. Sharad's father, a powerful politician, who believes Sharad is innocent uses illegitimate means to dispose of Mukti, including an attempt to kill her. When Mahesh learns of this, he approaches Sharad's father and reveals to him that his son is indeed guilty of the crime and if he attempts such an act again, he will not defend Sharad. With this revelation, the attempt to convict Sharad becomes a battle between good and evil with Prerna on one side and Sharad on the other side. In the end, Sharad is proven innocent and released from custody; however, the day of the trial, Sharad's mother has overhead the conversation between Sharad and his father and she has learned the truth that Sharad is guilty. Being that she is a women, she refuses to let Sharad get away with such a crime and decides to let everyone know the truth; however Sharad's father is not willing to lose so easily and imprisons her in a room while the trial is taking place. During that time, Sneha comes home and opens the door holding Sharad's mom hostage and learns the truth from her, including the truth about possible evidence of Sharad's confession in Prem's office. She goes to Prem's office and finds the evidence. She then goes to the courthouse and we see her meeting Sharad as he is leaving the court house after being announced innocent. She confronts him and he immediately begins to apologize, confessing that he made a mistake. What he doesn't know is that Sneha is secretly taping his confession. When he learns that, he tries to run away, pushing Sneha violently and causing her to miscarry their child. Sharad is once again taken into custody, the truth is revealed to all and the relationship between them and Prerna is improved.
After the Sharad storyline, Prem and Mukti have had their differences and despite Prem apologizing to Mukti, she no longer cares for him as she once did. He even proposes to her but she rejects him, which causes him to use any means possible to make her life difficult. During this Prerna learns a secret about Tushar, Mr Bajaj's oldest son. She doesn't know how to reveal this secret to Mr. Bajaj. Tushar has been rejecting any attempts by Mr. Bajaj to meet a girl and get married, it is so because he has been secretly married for the past two years to a young British girl by the name of Doris, who was left alone after her mother died and Tushar couldn't turn her away and had to marry her. During this time, it is also noted that someone is trying hard to kill Prerna and Anurag and it is hinted that Aparna might have returned into their lives; however, clues indicate that it not a woman but rather a man who is attempting to kill them or harass them. A new character also has made an entrance, a young girl name Debonita who has come from Calcutta and is living with Anurag. She is slated to be a vamp to replace the popular character played by Komolika. And, she showed the audience her true colors when she separated Prem and Mukti (who has now left Prerna's house, heartbroken) and has helped Sharad escape from jail. Prerna convinced Anurag to marry Sampada. On their marriage day Sneha was kidnapped by sharad and tortured. Sneha in a desperate effort to save herself ends up in getting hold of Sharad's gun. Prerna reaches the spot and witnesses sneha accidentally shooting Sharad's mom. Sharad's mom dies and Prerna inorder to save Sneha confess to the police that she is the murderer. Anurag overhears Sneha and Prerna's conversation in jail and comes to know the truth. But Mr. Bajaj is still kept in darkness. Prerna was sentenced for 14yrs imprisonment. Mr.Bajaj mistook Anurag Prerna coversation and got the false impression that Prerna still loves only Anurag. After the 5 yr leap, Prerna returns to her house, but her children where living with Anurag and Mr. Bajaj was missing. Prem had turned villain and he joined komolika. Prem cheated Bajaj and took all his money. Prerna challenged Prem and there starst her next Kasautii. Sam forced Prerna to stay in Basu house but as days passed due to the increasing friendship of Anurag Prerna, her insecurity also increased. Now there are some usual marital problems going on between Anu-Sam. Prerna is searching for Mr. Bajaj.Mukti's marriage was fixed and Prem had the realisation that he loves Mukti. But now Mukti denied to marry Prem, but on her marriage day Prerna asks Mukti to go back to Prem. But Mukti was killed in a major car accident and Prem ensd up in a state where he don't know where he is and what he does. Prem is still living in Mukti's thoughts. Mr.Bajaj returns. But he don't want to come in front of Prerna. The mystery behind this is not yet revieled. A new businessman Ohmi saves Komolika from Mukti murder case and buys most of the shares of bajaj's channel in low cost. Now we figure out that Mr Bajaj had left because when he heard Prerna and Anurags conversation, he thought they still loved each other. He felt betrayed by Prerna and left his family. Sneha brings him back to Prerna, and they live happily for a while. Then Prerna figures out that Anurag and Mr. Bajaj have secretly been trying to plot out her life for her, not taking her opionion into any consideration. Prerna decides to cut off all relationships with Mr. Bajaj and Anurag, feeling very betrayed. She goes with Prem to Pankweshwar to get Prem's treatment done. While she is there, she gets kidnapped and almost dies until she runs to a fair near by. There, as she is escaping her kidnappers, she sees a girl that looks exactly like Mukti. She finds her, and sees that this is the only way that Prem can get treated back to normal besides electric shock.
